How to make the puppet:
First, I hollowed out a spot on the end of the football for the eye light battery pack. I ran the wires and lights along the bottom and tucked them into half of a water bottle. I drilled holes in walnut shells for the eyes. The Palp/Fangs are bent nails. The rest of the parts are connected to each other with duct tape. Lots and lots of duct tape.
How to make the mechanism:
Pretty much followed the directions here: http://softlyspokenmagicspells.com/halloween/dcs.html (Thanks Allen)
The noise you here in the videos is actually the background sound for my spider cave. The spider itself is silent (except for the motor).

Hey DS. If it was dead, would it still creep you out. Haaaa! Get it? Get it? 'Cause you're name is DeadSpider. Man, I crack myself up. The voices think I'm funny, anyway.
Seriously, thanks everybody.
I was worried a crank puppet (ghost, spider whatever) would be a little cliche, but couldn't pass up a chance to show him off.

How big is it?

The back end is made with a full size nerf football. That should give you some idea of the scale. If you stretch him out, I'd say he's about 48" leg tip to leg tip. With everything in place the triangle frame is 4 foot on each side. Bozo hangs about 18-24" below the frame.

fantastic! ewww creepy...love the sound, it really makes it.
Nice job pulling off a full animation within budget. There should be a special category incorporating Nerf footballs!

Wow, BoysinBoo, your spider is going to creep out A LOT of TOTs this Halloween! It looks great and I love the movement on it; it looks exactly how I imagine a giant spider would look like if it was scurrying to come get me. I also really like the audio, it sounds like an entire colony (cluster?) of spiders is right behind "Mom".
BoysinBoo

Actually, Bozo is one of the smaller "giant" spiders in and around my spider cave. The entrance is guarded by a truly giant spider that is 22 feet leg tip to leg tip

(She sits on my roof). And we are about 20% complete on a Village Haunt style spider wiper that will be about 6 feet from tip to tip. That noise (cicadas, chattering teeth, and rattlesnake BTW), tons of baby spiders, web, and dangling fishing line to drag across the TOTs faces complete the overall effect. Big area of expansion for us this year. I hope it ROCKS!

I watched the video and didn't know I had the sound off. Then watched it again with the sound on, and it made a huge difference in the "snatch-your-feet-off-the-floor" factor. Great sound...........Great prop.

Thanks Everybody! I like him a lot. He's still hanging in my garage. The door was open this weekend. You should have seen the look on one of my neighbors faces when she went for her nightly walk. Somebody new in the neighborhood showed up later and asked to take a picture of it. He wanted to show his buddy. I just told him about our little group here, and gave him the link.
Mwaa Haa Haa! We've corrupted another!
