View Full Version : New Contest Suggestion

I would like to suggest an idea for a new contest.
We, as a group, would pick a list of items that each of the contestants would use to make a creation all their own. The items would all be inexpensive things found in the average home (rubber band, roll of masking tape, roll of paper towels, etc.). The contestants would have to use say 80% of the items on the list.
I think it would be very interesting to see the creativity that can be accomplished by different people with a standard list of items.

I like that idea. I'm not creative myself - but I'd love to see what people come up with.

Great Idea Nyx. Love it. It's perfect for the home haunter in these economic doldrums we seem to be having.
AND... it sounds like an episope of MacGuyver. Remember the one where Mac defeats the Terrorists by building a hover tank using just a Talking thru Boris, some chewing gum and his pocket knife... LMAO!

I like it! Our next contest was supposed to have been a coffin building contest, but Halloween Forum just did one of those so I didn't want to copy them. If I find time over the weekend I'll start working on the rules.
You guys should start tossing out some ideas for items to be used. I'll pick and choose based off of the list you guys submit here. :)

List of household items I can think of right off the bat:
wire hangers
dryer lint
plastic soda bottles
Gallon milk jugs
bottle caps
paper bags
plastic grocery bags
pens-the ones clogging up the junk draw
newspaper
food coloring-left overs from Easter
all purpose flour
dish detergent
styrofoam-from the meat packages.
I could go on and on. I love using stuff around the house and recycling it into a halloween prop.

Hey BC, "No more wire hangers!"
What if there was also a list of banned items. I'm not sure I could build something without at least one piece of duct tape. Might make it even more fun.

I was merely making suggestions for items to use from things normally found in ones home. Heheheheheh
As for no coat hangers one could substitute paperclips, old bird cage wire, wire bread ties.
Oh my the list could go on and on.
Toothpicks
Pasta noodles
old wax candles
I would love to see a contest for going green.
Excluded items paint, stains and store bought glue. It's amazing what you could do with dyes, flour, water, and dishsoap, and cornstarch.

Bee, I guess I would prefer to see it limited to just house stuff and very common house stuff at that. I would guess that most of our houses contain things not common to most folks ( I have a few small skulls next to my chair and a gallon of elmers in the hallway, not to mention the fake eyeballs) And as far as adding money into the mix, even a small amount, would change the nature of the build. I mean, what is available to me for a dollar and what may be available to you for a dollar might be two very different things. If I understand what folks are saying here this is almost a "stranded on a island" concept and all you have are these few basic items. Its not so much what you have, but how creative you can be with next to nothing.

Wow a build from common house hold items Z has his work cut for rules on this one. I mean hell if this is what my garage looks like you can imagine my shed. Not to mention what some of us consider a "common" house hold item.

Bone Dancer
07-04-2008, 04:50 PM
I really dont think it will be that big of a problem. I think the general idea is "common items" that would be found in regular household, not a haunters house. So we are looking at stuff like tape, paper towel or toilet or newspaper. Its my guess that it will be a very limited list of things both in number and in size.
Lady Nyxie
07-04-2008, 08:35 PM
Yes, Bone Dancer is correct, it was my intent that it be a "normal" household, not necessarily a haunter's household, but ultimately the decision lies with Z since he is coming up with the rules. Any way you slice it, it sounds like it is gonna be a blast.
Thanks everyone for all the enthusiasm on this one.
Although as a moderator I don't participate as a builder in these contests, I do love following along and voting on them. It was suggested to me, and I agree, that the younger forum members are somewhat at a disadvantage. A challenge like this only brings that out more, since they don't own Mom and Dad's clutter, lol. I'd like to propose that whatever the challenge, we have an under 18 category for judging as well. I volunteer to arrange for, or provide the 3 top under age 18 winners with their prizes.

I think some amount of money needs to be set aside for anything, not just paint... adhesives, screws, wire, whatever... otherwise it could end up being just like the Rapid Remains contest, yielding things that may look shabbily clever but wouldn't last until Halloween in storage much less survive the Big Night. Yes, the grand majority can be these pre-chosen materials, but limiting it to only those would ultimately limit the creativity. And I think most people here aren't just building to win a prize; they'll want a prop that they like and want to use as well.

that sounds like a lot of fun, I especially like the idea of going with a "green" theme considering most people are being so conscience of it these days.

Apparent heaps of rotting vegetation shamblers are intelligent forms of vegetable life that suffocate prey in their slime

I'm working on this right now. I should have it announced and up and running by the end of today. The way this will work is I will list 10 items, 5 of which you MUST use in the prop. I will also be setting a price limit as usual to help keep the playing field level.
