Okay dave, figured since it seems to be just us right now we should change the name. I gave you top billing since you have all the ideas :D :D.
Okay so Im thinking moving spider victim using the shiatzu motor. I do happen to have 2 if you need one or i know you have done a Trash can trauma but im thinking of using a tree stump instead since it will be in my yard and i dont need a garbage can in my yard LOL. Or maybe a bottomless pit? Or what are your ideas dave? Im just throwing out things i have thought about doing.

glad you chose to name it the way you did....KY/ IN just sounds wrong and might raise a few questions......
Shiatsu spider victim sounds intriguing...did you ever find a link to this prop?
I'd be glad to help out with a TCT if you want one.( I also thought a large pumpkin TCT?...the mech is the same whatever you decide to mount in in)
I pesonally have no current interest in a bottomless pit, but would love to see one firsthand.
I have any weekend available in Aug EXCEPT Aug 23.

IN/KY could have some issues, but I like INKY:D
I'd be interested in the spider victim, have a few motors from a back massager mat.
August 9th is the only bad day I have.
I'm in, if you'll have me.

Dave, I like the idea of the spider victim and trash can trauma, not sure which is better. I really liked the way you did your trash can trauma though, with all of the body bags, you just didnt expect it. Did you ever scare your garbage man half to death!:) Now that I think of it, I kind of favor trash can trauma, but whatever, there both cool!

I usually end up 'helping' with the projects rather than building my own...what do you guys think of a free-for-all this time? Bring whatever you want to work on, and we can get a sample of a few different projects in one day...buffet style prop building! lol!
I am sure I'll have a thing or two in the works by then. mwahahaha....

Hmmmmmmmm, sounds kinda cool. Is there any chance that we could bring a static prop and you could help us make it pneumatic or something.......maybe.:)

That would all depend on what type of motion you want, what type of prop, how heavy, etc, etc.
PM me with some details to let me know what you are thinking about.
Tyler
07-30-2008, 06:08 PM
Ok quick ?. To make a pneumatic prop you need compressed air, right? Is there a cheaper way to do that then to buy a big old expensive air compressor, you can get a small one cheaper right.
dave the dead
07-30-2008, 07:39 PM
you can buy a small compressor cheaper, but the tank capacity will only support a single prop and will be re-filling constantly. If you are wanting to dive into animated props, perhaps motorized would be the way to go for now. It is certainly less of a start-up cost, and you can make some pretty darn impressive stuff with a few simple mechanisms.
Tyler
07-30-2008, 08:22 PM
Ok, cool. Any ideas on what would be cool to start with. As of now I have one animatronic, a stirring which. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.:)
Ok is this going to happen August 8th...I had it in my mind it was happening later in the month like the 30th. I will be camping on the weekend of the 8th
Tyler
07-30-2008, 08:26 PM
It is the 30th, right Dave.

12-13 bucks for a whiper motor sounds good.

All are invited rob.
Tyler, as far as ideas on what to start with... I would suggest a turning head mechanism for a very versatile back and forth motion. Also an up-and-down mech can be used for many things (like a head or figure popping up from behind a tombstone)
Tyler
07-31-2008, 01:01 PM
What exacly would I need to get a figure to pop up from behind something?
I know the good old oscillating fan method works good for head turning, and its really cheap. I am probably going to buy a couple when the weather goods cooler and stores start marking those things down.
lowdwnrob
07-31-2008, 07:23 PM
Im going to use the wiper motors to have things pop up from behind tombstones and have a rocking chair rocking. You can find lots of projects on Halloweenmonsterlist.info. Click on a project and then look at all the other projects on that site and it will keep you busy for a long while.

Okay so back to the original topic. What are we making at this MNT?
Yes, original topic...what ARE we making????
and before that topic, there was the question of date....I feel like a real dope here, but just realized that the 30th is Labor Day weekend, and I will be out of town. :(
So, after some switching of schedules at work, I now have Saturday the 23rd off. Does this work for anyone????
sorry for the screw-up on the dates!
dave the dead
08-05-2008, 02:03 PM
Ok, time to get serious here....
Here are my suggestions for projects:
Spider victim
motorized head behind a tombstone
byop...bring your own project (everyone brings whatever they want to work on, and we all pitch in ideas and help on the variety of props being built.
I am planning to dust off some of my props for a show and tell. (time to see what needs rebuilt from last year anyway)
So far, only Tyler has confirmed for August 23 (note the change of date in case you missed it)
Tyler
08-05-2008, 02:28 PM
Wow, i like all of the ideas. But i think my vote goes to the head behind a tombstone. The reason is that i think a spider victim might take a while, and i want to have time to check out your props too. I think the head would look really cool, and add alot to everybodys yard, and I know that you said that you wanted to make one anyway for your haunt.

Yes, I am on the south side of Indianapolis. I will start putting together a parts list for the head popper project. It will be just for the mechanism, and everyone can dress it out however they like.
Anyone else able to make it on the 23rd?

Cool, just ordered 4 of the gear motors yesterday!
turtle2778
08-08-2008, 12:59 PM
I swear I already posted my response to this, but working nights now so maybe i dreamed it LOL. Not sure what the head behind the tombstone is, but ill be bringing my stuff for the spider victim and some of those motors that scott brought. I need to pick up the connecter and a wallwart too. Im not sure how to wire it up and want to use those in another prop. Also if i can locate them Id like to do 4 more bori hacks. I got my 2 to do my jokes, but I think I would like to use them for my singing group this year instead and have them telling the jokes as well as singing. Ill have to see what time constraints I have, but if i have the heads done then its just a matter of making the bodies if I have the time.

If you don't have one of these, I will sell you one of mine. I will try my best to keep this project to under $15 (including the motor) Whatever I pay for supplies, we will divide up by the number of people building this prop, ok?
I don't think the head popper will take very long to make, so feel free to bring along any other project you would like to work on. Turtle has already mentioned she would like help building an animated spider victim http://halloweenforum.com/halloween-props/58974-my-spider-victim-2.html
and hacking some boris skulls.
I will provide lunch on the grill...Please bring whatever you like to drink.

08-13-2008, 06:48 AM
What time does it start? Well, let's say 9:00 am or whenever everyone arrives.
FYI..I put together a prototype of a modified version of the headpopper mech last night. The 5 rpm gearmotors work great with a foam skull, and will even run with a bucky skull attached. (although it seemed a bit labored in the rising part of the motion) This is gonna be a very easy prop mechanism to build, but it really has a good 'Wow' factor...
If you are bringing your own wall wart, try to get either a 9Vdc or 12Vdc output. I am running mine on 12Vdc, and the speed is just about perfect, plus this provides full power from the motor.

Do you guys get together every month? Is it a set day and time or just whenever people can meet up? Do you always meet at the same place or does everyone take turns hosting?
I am new here and have been reading this thread for a week or so now and I am wanting to come so bad on the 23rd, but I don't think I can get out of work. I would love to come join you guys and learn to make some really cool stuff. Lachoween, We really do not have a set schedule, time or place...usually we will start a thread and compare notes as to when the most folks can get together....it has been rather hit or miss this year. Keep watching in the coming months and hopefully you will be able to make it next time. I would say there's a good possibility of a September MNT, but who really knows until it happens? LOL.

I just checked my wallwart stash, and only have 9Vdc available...will work fine but a bit slower. If you are planning anything with more weight than a foam skull, you better go with the 12Vdc.
Just to be clear, I am charging only what I spent for the supplies on this build.
This weekend I got the supplies and pre-cut all the wood into kits this morning. The supplies for this build will be $6 with no motor, $13 with the motor and a 9Vdc wallwart. Right now I have Rob and Tuck needing a motor/wall wart. ( I only have one more motor available...)

We will arrive around 9 ish, your house is close to work and I now have a manager out sick, so I will have to leave around 11:30, but still enough time to mingle and do some damage HA HA HAAAAA! My husband and son will be along, no sitter so I hope that does not pose a problem?? I am still waiting on our friend to see if she's coming along, her husbands on call so no sitter either. Can't wait for Sat!!!!

Hey guys, Im back, cant wait for Saturday! And Cedar Point does have some of there Halloween stuff out, really cool. I also stopped at a strange place called Ghost Town. Its a really strange place with a bunch of all stuff, old buildings, and creepy maniquins. I will post some pics in oddities when I get a chance.

I think I am ready for this....what a great response to this MNT!!!
I have supplies for 8 headpoppers ready to go with 3 motors spoken for.
AA, I don't think the kids will be a problem as long as they have something to keep them entertained and the parents keep an eye on them. We will be working in the back yard and in my garage...back yard is fenced and fairly kid safe, although it has been a long time since I have had to worry about that.
really looking forward to meeting you all!
Dave

We will be building props starting at 9:00 tomorrow morning and should be finished sometime on the evening of October 31. It is my hope that we will still have time to change into our costumes and go trick-or-treating, but I can't guarantee anything. :smilevil:
(ok, actually I would expect the headpopper to take only about an hour or so, lunch around noon...done by 2:00?...you are welcome to stay as long as you like though)

Went to Kroger, they had choclate cupcakes with orange icing. Thought that it was appropriate but they have little pretty color sprinkles. Sorry, they are not perfect.

Does anyone have pics of the props to post up? I was showing the wife the pics on my cell phone but it does not do them justice. Dave, that means you have to have them out next time because I have a funny feeling that there might be a couple more cameras next time.

It was great to meet you guys today! Hope everyone felt like it was worth the trip because some of you really drove a long way to get here. Please make sure to take pix of your new headpoppers when you get them all set up...I am sure everyone here at HF would love to see them.
so now, I have to struggle...put away the props or just leave them out till october:googly:

man, you guys were only about 4 hours away - looks like I'm a day late and a dollar short. Oh well, probably would have burned up this year's haunt budget in fuel anyway I suppose.

Just wanted to let you guys know that I figured out an easy way to wrap those dollar tree bucky hands around a tombstone for the head popper. If you just light both sides of the hands with a lighter and then bend it and hold it for a few seconds, it will keep shape. If you get the flame really close it will leave burn marks, which worked great for my new Gretta. Just thought I would let you know.
