This is the thread for all discussion concerning the "2008 MacGuyver of Haunting Challenge."
Please refer to this thread (http://www.hauntforum.com/showthread.php?t=11683) for the official rules.

Everyone be completely aware that winners from the previous challenge (2008 $20 Prop Challenge) are not eligible to win prizes in the current challenge. You may still enter, but your entry will not be in the running for a prize.
Also note the rule concerning items obtained from scrap:
All commercially available items obtained from scrap will have a value associated with it. This value has been deemed to be 30% of it's original cost. For instance, if you obtain a 4 foot length of 2" x 4" lumber, it's value will be equal to it's off the shelf value (we'll say $1.50 for this example) multiplied by .3. Therefore, its value would be 1.5 * .3 = 0.45.
Please, talk amongst yourselves. :D

I'm not seeing the TOTAL cost limit in the rules. Am I just missing it?
Zombie-F
08-03-2008, 07:44 PM
The list of supplies must specify the cost of each item (minus cost of the 10 "required" items), and the cost must total $30 USD or less (or "close enough" to within $1 over cost). If you live outside the US, you must convert your prop's value from your native currency to USD.
I'll put it in bold so it stands out more.

Deoderant balls?! Do they still even make roll-on deorderants? I usually use dry stick myself but when I went looking for roll-on last year I couldn't find anything local.
Not that it'd be on my list of 5 anyways... But I'd think deorderant balls are harder to come by than ping pong balls - but maybe that's the point ;)

I thought the same thing Bloodhound so don't feel bad. Coffee cans? I always get bags (but then again, I only buy whole beans) so it threw me for a second too! I had images of having to raid the tool shelves of older relatives, stealing their rusted cans that currently house a myriad of nails and screws.

hpropman
08-06-2008, 01:35 PM
well to get the value of the lint you take the value of the clothes that you have dried in last 2 weeks and then divide that number by .032675 and then you take that number and get the square root and then multiply by pi. Simple really. :-D
BoysinBoo
08-06-2008, 02:06 PM
I was thinking you could get your original receipts for the clothes, then weigh the clothes. Divide the cost by the weight. This gives you value "A". Then wash and dry them. Weigh the clothes after. Divide the original cost by the new weight. We have value "B". Subtract B from A and you have the value of the lint. Might be a little anal, but it would work.
Oh heck. Z-F, you should just establish that you can use as much dryer lint as you want for, oh, let's say $30.01. LOL.

Go to your local newspaper and ask them for discarded newspaper or end rolls. We sell them for a dollar a bundle and bewarned the bundles are huge. End rolls do not have ink on them, just small rolls of paper that are left over from the press run. They range in price from 1.00 to 10.00 depending on the size.
Pallets are normally free.

ZF, I'm trying to figure out how I would calculate the cost of paint. I can figure out something for base coats and such. And it would be easy if I were using a quarter of a container, but I probably will end up using literally tiny dabs of paint for most colours (and often mix them with water). The tubes of paint cost $4.99 for 59 ml. So what would a 'dab' be calculated as? Would 11 cents per dab be a reasonable amount?

Yeah, I'd consider those a free recyclable item. Honestly, I have never had to buy any packing peanuts to ship something.

Anyone ever use cellulose insulation to make paper mache clay? If so how were your results? It's a lot cheaper than the packaged stuff at Micheal's. If I can us it, it will help me stay in budget (and quicker than making my own).

If home situations had been different I would have joined the fun; it looked like a blast. And I like the required materials idea; it forces you to look at things for what they could be instead of what they are. I think that's a required skill for being a really good costumer or propmaker if you're not a one-material purist.
Voting will absolutely suck, there were some marvelous entries here. More than three, that's for sure. Some of them will have to go without a prize and it seems so unfair when you consider the quality and amount of time and effort spent on many of them... but hey that's why it's called a contest. This weekend I'm working the masquerade at Archon and once again I'll be pitying the poor judges who will have to choose between too many masterpiece-grade costumes. There's nothing like a friendly competition to bring out brilliance.
Congratulations to one and all who entered!

It's a pretty cool contest (my first on the forum!). Like the others have said, being forced to use specific materials is great. Pushes you to think "what's the best way I can use this?". It was my first time using paperclay AND my first time making something that moves (at one point I was worried about using materials/approaches I'd never done before).
The neat thing about the entries is you can see people thinking totally 'out-of-the-box'.

I really don't want to remember when the last time I had to use paper mache and I have never used celluclay. I wasn't sure what to expect. Finding styrofoam packing material was insainly hard. I had to go dumpster diving for it and I came up empty so many times before I scored (unreal). Thank's for the contest - Z ! Good Luck everyone!

Zombie, I loved the idea. It was fun, and challenging to find uses for the variety of items. I wasn't around for the earlier contests, but I thought this was a blast. Keep up the good work. I'm looking forward to future chances to get creative, and see what others come up with. Contests like this open your eyes to so many possibilities of what can be done with simple materials.

This is my first prop challenge and I had a lot of fun. I don't even care if I win or not. It was very MacGuyver for me since I built it in three days (sat, sun, and monday night). The lit of required materials does push you out side of our comfort zone. I don' think I would have made the hands out of twine otherwise, but I love they way they look. When I do make a scare crow, I'll probably make him all out of twine!

I haven't participated in a contest here in a while (not since the scarecrow in '06), but I don't mind the materials restrictions. I think it's a good idea, actually. It keeps a level playing field for the contest, and if people want to do more, they can do it separate from the contest.

Would you mount him feet up or down? LOL !
If I was your wife, I certainly would let you put that on the wall for 1 year, as long as I got the bucky !
Congrats. Sorry to hear he's not for sale. I didn't think he would be. HEE HEE. Now I will have to figure out something else to get the mister for christmas! Enjoy !
Also congrats to the other two winners ! Excellent props !

Awsome! what a great contest. I cant believe I made third! I thought you had me for sure there, Bloodhound. Congrats Papa and Ghoul. Oh and Ghoul- I told ya so!!!:D
*chuckles* I'll wait for the official word from ZF before I accept your 'told-you-so' ;) It was all very exciting.
Ive been fighting off a nasty little bug (no, not Papa Boo's roach ;) ) since Wednesday so it's back to the couch for me. I'll check in later to see what's happening with the final votes.
Until then, congrats! And thanks.

I still have to go and validate that all voters followed the rules, so let's not get ahead of ourselves. I did have a person who broke the voting rules in the past which changed what the outcome appeared to be. :)
Zombie make sure no dead people voted! Even here on the haunt forum I don't think the cemetary vote counts. :)
Ghoul Friday I hope you're feeling better soon.
