Single item.
Zombie, can you clarify the "One entry per person/per household" rule? Our household has two active members - can both of us submit an entry?
There are to be no more multiple entries from a household. Some valid concerns were brought up with the past few contests, mainly that it doubles a household's chances of winning by allowing multiple entries.
You guys can certainly work on a project together and submit that.

Yes the cost of the original piece will be included in the prop's cost. You can't make the mold without the original so the original goes into the cost.
However, let's say you were making molds of a skull and needed four of them for your project... well, you would only need to add the cost of the original piece one time not four times.

Then fair market value comes into play. What would you expect to pay for it? Since it's technically used, multiply the approximate value by .3 and you get your item's value.

DAMN, now Spooky1 and I have to get divorced so we can both enter the contest!!!!!:googly:
Okay, seriously now, if I may throw something out for consideration, perhaps another approach to this issue would be to have a rule of "Only one winner per household".
Spooky1 and I were looking forward to working together separately (if that makes sense) on this contest. The idea that doing so would be a means of doubling our chances of winning certainly never crossed our minds.

What about thrift store items such as clothes? Or what if I have a seven year old shirt in the closet that under normal circumstances (if I weren't a haunter) would have been donated and ended up in a thrift store. Say that shirt originally sold for $30 bucks but would be listed at $4 bucks at the thrift store? What's the real fair market value of that shirt? If I took it out my closet it would go for $10 bucks versus $4 if I bought it at a thrift?

Packing material, like styro-peanuts or bubble wrap scrap. No one actually buys that stuff, they just accumulate it... It's a side effect of having things shipped to you.

I have a couple questions that have answers somewhere in previous $20 prop contest.
I know if i make a mold, I have to count the cost of the original item and the mold making cost, and casting materials.
Questions:
1. What if is use a skull as a guide, like I have seen others here do, where they wrap it in foil or paper mache and then pull it off and have a hollow skull form. Is that considered the same thing?
2. Also, if I win this contest, am I disqualified for other contests this year, or just next years $20 contest?

I believe the rules say shipping doesn't count.
Ah, yes: "Shipping costs to obtain materials shall not be included in your total cost to build. Feel free to obtain stuff from eBay or online vendors and only count the cost of the item towards the total."

Plastic bottle FREE from recycling $ 0.00
Newspaper FREE from recycling $ 0.00
Plastic shopping bags FREE from recycling $ 0.00
Paper mache mix of flour, glue, water, pro-rated mix $ 1.04
Paper mache pulp mix flour, glue, chalk, toilet paper, linseed all are pro-rated mix $ 1.79
would this all still be basically right?

IF you bought the items at a thrift shop, the thrift shop price applies. IF the clothes are yours, the original price multiplied by .3 rule applies.

1. That would be the same as making a mold. You still need the original item to make the copies, so the original item goes into cost.
2. If you win, you will be ineligible to win a prize in the next prop building contest this year. You can enter the next competition after that.
would this all still be basically right?
Yes, your prices would be acceptable.

Roxy,
All you have to do is kick Spooky out until the contest is over. He can stay at the Motel 6. Then you will be in different households. Just don't get used to him not being there. LOL!
I'm kidding, of course. You should build the project together. It could be fun. Does it involve paper mache? Think: remake of the pottery scene in ghost.

03-03-2009, 02:54 PM
Judging from the responses to other questions I'm going to assume open season on the used packing material. It's not even technically part of the finished prop... stuffing a form prior to construction is just sort of a temporary detour on it's way to the trash.
Time to get stuffin'.

ZF what about hair salvaged from another prop or wig? Would that still be 30% the original cost of the original prop? I had a skull that had hair attached back in 2007. I had stripped the hair then to use on a Gemmy skull prop but have since taken it off the skull in 2008 and was gonna use it for something else that I never had time for, so it's sitting around in a bag. What would the value of that hair be? Would that fall under the same rule as molds since technically I would have had to buy the original to begin with?

Sadly, I don't budge on this 30% of original value rule for very many things. In years past, the things people were considering as "free" were getting more and more ridiculous which forced me to enact this rule to keep people from getting too creative with what's free.
We're talking a bed sheet here... how much is that new? $3 at Wal mart? That comes to $0.90 so I don't think it's going to tip the scales all that much.

Since Spooky1 and I can't participate separately (the haunting equivalent to the marriage penalty we get with taxes), this would actually be very useful information to have. If we had an idea of what other contests were being held between now and the end of the year, it would help us decide how to divvy up our efforts. Not every contest is going to appeal to both of us, and neither of us wants to see the other end up not having a chance to shine as a soloist.
Zombie, do you have perhaps a rough idea of what might be coming down the pike? I know in the past there have been theme contests (tombstones, monster mud, scarecrows) and of course the $20 MacGuyver contest, where certain materials had to be incorporated in the prop.
What say you, Z?

I believe the contest is well structured and I'm confident all the constraints are in place to try and keep things as fair as possible.
It has to be impossible to make rules that satisfy everybody but for future contests I hope you consider Roxy's suggestion of only 1 winner per household rather than one entry.
I know I'm a rookie here and could be totally wrong and making a fool out of myself offering an unrequested opinion. Luckily, I have plenty of experience making a fool of myself so I'm somewhat comfortable in this situation.
I believe two major goals of the contest are to stimulate creativity and generate how to's...... in my opinion, limiting entries does neither.
I think each member should be able to submit an entry. As a matter of fact, I personally wouldn't have an issue with one person submitting multiple entries.
However, like most contests, I do think it reasonable to allow only one prize per household.
Anyway, whatever the rules, I intend to submit an entry and just be happy you offer this contest. Far as I'm concerned, the prizes are a nice bonus but I would be happy if there were no prizes at all and we were just competing for votes from our peers.
Anyway, there is my two cents worth which, if invested at the current rate of inflation, will be worth almost a dollar 100 years from now.

My opinion for what its worth at 30% - whatever you make, someone else should be able to duplicate from scratch holding a twenty and going shopping. If I can't get the walwart at walmart for $1.50, then its under valued.

DarkLore,
Zombie-F made the 30% rule due to the ridiculous stuff people were using and calling it "free" and to keep the playing field kinda even.
Obviously, most people wouldn't have a truckload of free fencing..so that wouldn't be a fair entry. A lot of people have old power-cords lying around from broken equipment or you can get them at a thrift store.
If you look closely at the competition in previous years, the props were amazing, and most people couldn't pull them off for $20. I personally, had my doubts about the amount of money actually put into some of the props.
Most of the $20 props are static, and a few people attempt small animation with the new 30% rule. It kept everything more simplistic and more even for competition. My entry last year was a Blucky in drag, which is more in keeping with the idea of a $20 home-made prop than a flesh-eating-grave-grabbing-zombie-monster that would cost most people $200 in supplies alone.
I understand what you are saying about taking $20 and going to the store but most of us take pride in the fact we found a piece of crap on the side of the road or at the thrift store and turned it into a cool prop for little money.

I don't make the rules but to me it would seem how much would you pay for it in the thirft store.

"An entrant MUST have at least 30 new posts on the forums between March 1st, 2009 and April 30th, 2009. That means new people and inactive members must be active on the forums between now and then to be qualified to enter."
Here's the rule for reference - 30 NEW posts between 3/1/09 and 4/30/09. You can start working on the prop while earning your posts - just be sure you have your 30 before 30 April.

I'll give you my 2 cents. The foil is a recyclable (like newspaper), so it's free. The bottle can be bought at the dollar store. So if you use a broken/repurposed one I'd say the salvage rule applies: 33 cents.

I built the prop, but i don't think it will win so i started a new one. How much would a 20 somthing year old volley ball that i found in the ivy in my back yard be? It been partly eaten by worms.

uh,worms eat dirt not balls
Some volleyballs are made of leather. Leather is made of cow hide. Cow hide is skin.
Do you ever think as a hearse goes by,
that you may be the next to die?
They wrap you up in a big white sheet
From your head down to your feet.
They put you in a big black box,
And cover you up with dirt and rocks.
All goes well for about a week,
Then your coffin begins to leak.
The worms crawl in, the worms crawl out,
The worms play pinochle on your snout.
They eat your eyes, they eat your nose,
They eat the jelly between your toes.
A big green worm with rolling eyes,
Crawls in your stomach and out your eyes.
Your stomach turns a slimy green,
And pus pours out like whipping cream.
You spread it on a slice of bread,
And that's what you eat when you are dead.

I have a question.
What if I have a can of Cap'n Shiny Ricks matte black spray paint, made with coal from diamond mines, and it has microscopic diamonds in it, and it makes the cost $100 ca can, however, it doesn't work any better than $2.50 a can black spray paint. DO I have to go buy the $2.50 can of spray paint? or can I use what I HAVE ON HAND, but just cost it for the generic item from the store since the brand isn't important?
Lemme know before I paint!

OK here's mine if it's a prop accessory like a fog chiller or something do you count the fog machine in the price even though the fog machine isn't the prop?

we'll have to wait for the official verdict on that, however my two cents would be no. You would have a picture of your accessory, maybe a movie of how your accessory works.

OK! I went thru my recyclables and thought...I might as well go "green" while trying to stay below $20. I like paper mache so, A little glue and tape and paint wont add up to too much. It will be interesting to see how well I can do with what some might consider waste. This is going to be fun

That's sort of like saying "I have a Bucky skull on hand but want to cost it out as though I have a BLucky skull to use." So, you will have to go get the $2.50 spray paint if that's how you want to apply it's cost.

My past judgments on similar props/accessories was that if it needs something else in order to "work" then that something else needs to be included in the cost.

OK....My family had an antique gold plated 2"x 4", incrusted with diamonds and other really precious stones that depicted Michael Angelo's mural in the Sistine Chapel on it. But I gave it to my friend who needed the 2"x4". He used an axe and chopped off all the old gold and stuff so he could use some of the wood.
Well, he had a 3 foot long piece left over and sold it to me for $1. The thing is, I only need to use a 1 foot piece of the 2"x4"....sooooo does that mean that I can pro rate it for 33 cents? I really really hope so cuse I really really need it to finish my $20 prop for less than $20 and right know the total cost of my $20 prop is $6.87...please help I need an answer soon!!!!
Also...do I have to include the full cost of my of cat....cause I used a whole lot of cat hair for my prop, and she was one of those really expensive type of cats.

I think it was a good question too.: If I have krylon do i have to go buy OSH store brand. I mean as far as how-to side of this contest, if your just gonna say flat black spraypaint in the end, can't you cost it to that, instead of the fancy national brand name can your GF picked for you. Stoopid "designer enamel".
sigghhhhhhh. I'll let it go.

Don't feel bad DC...I put myself in a situation with a prop that will keep me from entering...but really shouldn't. I almost completed my prop, and had a total of $19.74...then decided that I really hated the paintjob...I mean REALLY hated it. I had to go back and reapply another basecoat to recover, and the double painting puts me over budget. If I had nailed it from the beginning, there would have been no problem, but the added expense is just too much. If I were to write this as a how-to, I wouldn't include the step of "paint this thing really bad, then start over"...so as a how-to it would be feasible to keep it under $20 , but the way I did it I blew it....
Oh well...still time to make something else.

DC,you might have been better off pretending you went to the store, but you already asked the question

Hey Dave,
I would say that if you are completely covering the old paintjob, then you shouldn't have to include the cost of the covered up portion. I mean the spirit of the competition is that someone could conceivably re-create your prop using a $20 budget. If the first coat never existed, would your prop be the same? If so then I say ignore the oops.

Roxie...glad you LYAO, but I will always love Spooky1
DtD....I agree with BnB....I think only one paint job should be charged to your prop....unless!?!? ...you really just wanted to make something else

Alright that cuts it. I will be photographing all the brown label products I had to go buy to paint/build this thing. I hope your all happy :( !
Luckily Dave, I haven't painted him yet. Whew! I agree with Beelce and BoysinBoo, first coat isn't needed, doesn't change the look or feel, can't be seen, so I say it doesn't count.
and to Beelce I know your kidding, but I wonder if people know when I am kidding. Sometimes I can be a little too deadpan.
I got $5 left in my budget (after michaels discounts) so I just want to get as much as I can for it.
