Halloween forum has a challenge to build the coolest 20$ prop if anyone wants to get in on it. or we could have our own here. any way it sounds like a fun challenge.:D

There you go, putting reality in there again. I can see it now....
"hey, you didn't say anything about stealing your supplys."
Actually it looks like the Halloween fourum has some good ground rules going. could use those

Ok, so I was thinking about this. I'd like to sponsor one here and give a free t-shirt to the winner, which officially knocks me out of the competition. We should start to discuss the rules so everyone agrees on what is and isn't "ok" in this.
Should we use the HalloweenForum rules as our basis?
Post details of your prop and a picture (link okay) to this thread. (I'll create a thread for the actual contest later on)
Details must include a summary of how the prop was made and a list of supplies used. (How-to's are welcome)
The list of supplies must specify the cost of each item, and the cost must total $20 or less (or "close enough").
Supply prices must be reasonable - Using that Bucky skeleton that someone sold you for $3 isn't fair, but if you found some scrap lumber in a dumpster you can claim that as free. Use your head and some common sense here. Expendable items like glue and spray foam can be pro-rated.
In April, a poll will be created and a 10 day period of voting will take place. Winner will have the trophy mailed to him/her.
Of course, in order for us to actually do this, I'll say we need at least 5 participants... and feel free to participate in both ours and HalloweenForum's contest with the same entry.
Does this sound agreeable to everyone? Maybe we could choose a different month to hold the poll?

Ok, then let me submit for your approval two props that I am working on. The first is just a mask that I bought from Wal-mart last year for 1 buck. The paper mashe' and glue wasn't very. About a 1 buck for the paper and glue. Not done with it yet, just wanted to put my hat in the ring. The 2nd project is my pumpkinrot. The caldron was about 3.50 and about 2 bucks for paper and glue. This project not done yet.

Ok then, anyone else want to play? I'd like to get at least 5 members in on this otherwise it's not really much of a contest.
I think I'd like to toss into the rules that there can be only one entry per person, so in the end, Deathtouch will have to pick one of his to be entered in.
Also, as a courtesy to all the other participants, nobody will be allowed to vote on their own prop--you will need to vote on somebody else's. This will also help eliminate the risk of a tie. :googly: I can tell who voted for what.... so I will know!
Any other rules/questions/concerns you guys would like to toss into the bucket? I'd like to have something to say about this for Friday's chat reminder mailing.

Wow, that's awesome of you! Too bad you don't have any of the Talking Through Boris left... that'd be a good prize. Whatever you're willing to put up would be great. Perhaps a screamer fog machine and a timer or maybe a tombstone (of a value within reason). Really, anything is appreciated... it's good of you to offer something up.
I'll be sure to talk up your company tremendously in my email updates. "Frighteners Entertainment presents the Unpleasant Street $20 Prop Challenge"... or something along those lines.
In this case, perhaps the Frighteners item can be the big prize and the T-shirt can go to the runner-up.

Would it be fair to ask to allow late arrivals in after the (5) have been established? I know you want at least 5 participants but can you leave it open to anyone else once you reached 5? I would like to get in on this but am not sure on the time frame if I'll have the time. Sure, one entry per person sounds fair... we have a quite a few households here that have more than one haunter. However, I will add that there can't be two winners from the same household... meaning first and second place can't go to two people in the same household. In the event first and second does go to the same house, the second place prize is forfeit and goes to the (actual) third place winner.

I found an item (edited) I would like to use in my 20 dollar prop at a flea market...It cost 3 bucks.
It looks like it could have been a $50-$70 item (edited) when it was new. Are flea market finds allowed? No reciepts are given at those things, so I guess an honor system is used in this regard? Just curious.

I think THAT is a good idea..weed out the nuts, so that if thier banned...no contest. Also, since some of the items used in the contest rely on the honor system, ( Flea markets, Garage sales, Dumpster diving) as to how much they cost, and where they were obtained, I think we should open it up only to those truely interested in prop building and this site. My 2 cents.

I'm still thinking about it. I'm considering doing a pumpkinrot for the contest... seeing if I can do it for under $20 is the key. I think getting an old overcoat will be the most expensive item. I can get old vines and stuff from the woods behind my house. :D

Come on it will be a blast.
For me its not about the winning at all, Its about the aspect of trying to do something with nearly nothing. In the end everyone will win because they will see what can be done for less than 20$. And I am sure there will be some very cool props completed.
Question for Zombie, If I dig something out of my own trash or junk pile can I claim it as free? It would make sense that I should be able to, if I could get the same thing for free out of the home depot "free wood" box. Within reason of course.
Another thing can I claim newspaper as free?
Zombie-F
02-06-2006, 05:10 PM
It all depends on what the "something" you're digging out is. Clearly scrap wood or other trash items are fine... but if you throw away a CD player, that's not. :p
And yeah, we'll consider newspaper free as you can pretty much get that out of the trash for free.

I'm really looking forward to starting my $20 prop! I think this whole thing is a great idea.
It also got me thinking, would this be possible to do more often? I say this becuase I think of Unpleasant Street as a place promoting prop building. So if there was one of these monthly, it would give everyone some incentive to keep building stuff. There could be different restrictions every month to keep things different and interesting. It would give people a chance to show how creative they can be, and also people can learn from each other. Maybe I'm just getting carried away with the whole thing, but it seems like everyone would benifit from it.

I saw the discussion about having atleast 30 posts. I have to step up my posting here. I would be cool with just T-shirts as prizes could be Horror movie T-shirts whatever. But then again I agree that this is fun by itself without prizes, I think that way you will only get the true Halloween Prop builders in the Challenge. I started working on my Idea Yesterday and will Post my entry when its finished, I think my entry will help alot of people that cant afford expensive props (wait Im one of those people)..lol I just hope I hit 30 posts in time (Biting Nails)....:D Later all BobC

I'll have to say "no" to that as I want the contest to consist entirely of stand-alone items.
Im not going to lie Im writing this email to build up my posts to 30...lol Not that I dont really enjoy talking with all of you or anything but atleast Im honest :D
I got to thinking this is really going to suck noone is going to post their entery until the last minute. I know its all part of the Challenge and common sence not to post early cause someone can out do your project or whatever but I guess thats the name of the game. I have all my material for my entry I should start on it Saturday and be done by the end of the week. Talk to you all later BobC :jol:

I'm not in it to win either, but it would be nice! Anyhow, to prove it, I'll tell you guys what I'm building..
It's an animated zombie head. The eyes move side to side, and the jaw moves up and down. It doesn't sync electronically, as that would put it WAY over budget, but rather is controlled by a toy switch box directly hard wired to servos I exctracted from a toy remote control car I got at a flea market. Kinda like an electric puppet. All parts will be listed with prices and where obtained. I have the head almost completed, (the mechanisms) and I still have 12 dollars left in my budget. Body to be mounted to an ocillating fan, which deducts another 7 bucks (sears sale last year) which leaves 5 bucks left for corpsing the head and RIT dye for the clothing (free from trash). Frame will be built in the coming weeks from old wood found(free). PVC would put it over the budget. This is a real game of comprimise VS quality. The word "challenge" in the $20 prop challenge really has meaning! I hope you guys are having as much fun as I am building your props. Anyone else wanna divulge thier prop idea?

I'm thinking of doing a super-lightweight Stalk-Around style costume for myself. The kids last year already saw the Scream mask/dummy trick, and they won't fall for it again. Plus, I've wanted to make one of these for a long time.
As to whether I can realistically do it for $20... That remains to be seen. Whether I can or not, I'm doing it!

I calculated them for my prop and found I would spend half my budget on PVC stuff alone!

Dr M, I am able to incorporate PVC into my budget because I dont have the big bulky frame of the normal Skelerector. I have figured a way to do away with it while still keeping the prop grounded. Okay Doc, I've decided to build a life-sized floating witch for my project (Darkness Falls type hag) I'll corpse a styro head and see if I can get the frame done with schedule 40 pvc. A 10' piece is only about $3.00 at Home Depot. I have a bunch of foam mattress padding that I scarfed from a dumpster that I could use to bulk up the body. She'll be suspended from the ceiling with fishing line if I can keep her light enough. So that's the plan, now for the hard part :)
Krough, cool paper mache technique...you're really raising the bar for the rest of us.

I don't know if I'll get the minimum posts in or not, but I would like to try the $20 challenge. Hows this sound. The community room we convert into a haunted house on Halloween has a piano, and I wanted to have some skeleton arms hanging down that were twitching, fingers caught under that lid that covers the keys. I didn't have time to build them last year, but I think I could do it for under $20 for the coming year. The arms could also hang from a closed window, the trunk of a car or a car door, a garbage can lid, a mail box, use your imagination. I just order the motor ($2.50) and I have a pair of blucky arms I picked up 75% at Walmart after Halloween, I'll start figuring out the rest tomorrow.

Im starting to work on my Entry in about 10 minutes. Hopefully everything goes good so I dont have to scrap my idea. Besides my entry Im working on my Halloween web page to post it on. Is there any features you guys would like to see on a home haunters web page? Im just looking for extra ideas to make it alittle different from most other sites. Later all BobC :jol:

Hey BobC, thanks so much, its nice to know the new guys are generating some interest here! Dr. Morbius, that animated is head is great! I visited your site and I want to try your ideas using the following trio I picked up at WalMart during the 75% off after Halloween sale (under $2.00 each).

Krough, awesome! I have a vision of that guy crawling out of an opening in the bottom of a large tree, roots and vines entwining him as he tries to escape, and dies trying.
Latest on the arms at http://home.cfl.rr.com/myhalloweenpage/twitching_arms.htm
got em painted and dry-brushed. That is a good technique, made it look like I knew what I was doing!

Funny, alot of people think Im new. I have been home haunting for like 16 years. I picked it up cause my father did it all my life he still helps out but I do all the planning. I actually think he is the original home haunter but how do you prove that..lol Later BobC :jol:

Hey BobC, didn't mean to imply you were new, actually I was referring to myself as new (it's nice to be young at something). That must have been cool having a father that was into this also. I am the only sane person in my family that sees the beauty in providing some scares each Halloween.

I wonder if it would be a good idea if people were to email their final $20 dollar prop picture to Zombie and then Zombie would post those pictures in a special polling thread with information etc on the prop. People would cast their vote for their favorite prop. The thread would only allow members of Unpleasant Street cast their vote and not and messages so that no one gets confused from the entries to the messages. Can this be done? Or bad idea?

Read the rules... that's what I planned on doing. How it will work is like this...
You, the entrant, must post your entry as a new thread into this forum. Your post must contain a photo, brief description of how you built it, and a breakdown of how much everything cost you and where you got it.
Your thread will not appear immediately to the forum as it will need to be moderated by me. This makes it so I can stop any questionable entries from polluting the pool of valid entries. Once I approve of your post, it will appear to the forum for all to see.
Then, on April 1st, I will create a poll thread where only members will be allowed to vote on a winner. In the poll thread will be a link to each valid entry's how-to thread so members can view all entries and then vote.
All new members between now and the end of the poll will have their ip addresses checked against existing members to prevent anyone from registering under another name and spiking the vote in their favor.
Does anyone have any more questions on how that part of the contest will work?
Dr Morbius
02-20-2006, 07:05 PM
Yes, just one. How will you prevent the new thread form appearing after it is posted, and how can one preview thier post if one cannot see it?
Ok, it was 2 questions.
Zombie-F
02-20-2006, 07:08 PM
I have all new threads in this forum set to be moderated, meaning, if you were to post a new thread right now, it would only be visible to you and to me until I approve it via the forums' built in moderating functions. So, that answers both of your questions. :D

My guess, based on Zombies answer to my question is that both threads are viewable by both of you and Zombie, but no one else until he evaluates them and releases them for the rest of us to see.
I don't see why you can't submit two threads, just like you guys usually do. I'm sure Zombie is aware of your IP address, so that he would allow a vote by each of you, based on your registration..

The list of supplies must specify the cost of each item, and the cost must total $20 or less (or "close enough").
What is "close enough"? How much over are we talking about?

Yes it would heresjohnny. I already showed him(John from Pumpkinrot) the picture of the head. He told me that it looked pretty cool. He was also expecting me to revamp it like Johnny, but if I do that I might go over budget if I use it for the $20 dollar contest. I am hoping to buy some more skulls from Transworld in March. Our friends ACC should be there, so I am planning on buying. Not sure how much I will have next month. My company is taking us to the Bulls game just before Transworld, so I can't buy too much stuff there.
Are you planning on building any Pumpkinrot stuff?

Im pretty much done with mine. I dont know if it's a prop or not, but I recently made a color organ, to be used as a Thunder and Lightning Machine.
Cost= 7 dollars for kit, 2 dollars for case to hold it in, 1 dollar for blue christams lights ( 75% off after) and I guess thats it. So total was 10 bucks, maybe alittle more for a little electrical tape (used to cover the case). I'll try to have pics up later, once I find my digital.

"Details must include a summary of how the prop was made and a list of supplies used. How-to's are welcome"
Just to clarify, a how to isnt required correct?
If I dont have pictures of each step of the process is that a problem?
Or is just a text summary of my construction techniques enough?
Zombie-F
02-25-2006, 06:45 PM
All that is required is that you have a photo of the final product and a list of all the items that went into it. How-tos are not needed, but encouraged so anyone else interested in making your item for their own haunt can do so.

First I have to decide what I'm gonna make. Trying to decide if I want to stick with a standard type ghoul or make somthing specific for this years haunt. Will have to dig in storage containers and compare costs. I'm always last minute, it's a way of life for me.

I still have not decided which project I am going to enter. I have pumpkinrot and I have, which I call The Devil’s Rose. Which is similar to krough’s project expect it kind of looks like this. The head isn’t finished yet, but I had some time this weekend to get this part done. Still have mouth, back of head, body, and I got paint the damn thing. Not to mention the vines. But, I will be under 20 bucks when I am done.
