I just wanted to get your opinion on something. On my main project his year, I am planning on making a spinning slaughterhouse. I am planning on making it look something like the picture below. You may have seen this picture on Warcraft 3. This slaughterhouse will be as big if not bigger than my crypt that you either may or may nor have seen. I already have the chains and such for the prop. I am using a motor from a Christmas tree stand to make the top part move. Now the important part. I bought a mask from death Studios. I have a picture of that below. My initial plans were to make a creature, with the mask, inside of the slaughter. His head would move from side to side. My question would be would it be scarier that the creature was inside or outside of the slaughterhouse? Be honest please. I have 20 thousand ideas for this prop. It was a scary merry go-around then it turned into a Zoltar box. Etc. I am just having problem imaging if the guy should be inside or outside. Can you help?

Maybe he could be inside it... and then come out! You could make one of the cage doors swing open and have an actor play the creature who would then pop open the door and emerge to chase the TOTs.
Though, my vote goes with inside. I think it'd be scary to wonder how/why he's in there and what was done to him to make him look that way.

I agree, Inside would be cool, Just make sure he is lit well so that all that nice detail on the mask doesnt go to waste. I was thinking it would look interesting if he was lit from the bottom with a fire type of effect. I can see it in my head but its hard to explain.
I love that mask. I still need to get a few more masks this year.

I guess as of right now, my plans are to put plexi glass on the front side. He will be inside moving his head from side to side. but yes zombie, the reason why he is in there makes me think. But why. I guess I am thinking that he would be a part of the machine some way. Some of the chains will have half skeletons hanging from them. But again the guy inside will be a challange.

way cool idea for a prop..and a seriously wicken mask. I can't wait to see how it comes out in the end.
I do think it would be scarier for the guy to by inside or "part of" the machine, I am picturing (if this was my prop..lol) that he would seem to be part of the mechanics of the machine, like it was just an extension of his body or something...does that make any sense...

Yes, it does Hella. That was my first thought. Then I saw a prop someone made, that had a skeleton on a pilar. It was really nicely done. Here is the picture I saw. I was almost thinking about doing this instead of being inside. But his body is part of the machine. What do you think abou that?

Yes, Lotus, the pics works for me...
DT...where would you put the spinning part in relation to the "guy" if he was on the outside of the machine? I think that could be cool though

Doesn't work for me either. When I look at the source for the page, the [ IMG ] stuff is there, and when I go to the address listed, I get a 403: Forbidden Error. Lotus, are you on Verizon like me? It could be that Halloweengallery has verizon Forbidden from looking at the directory the image appears on.

I also can't see it, either through my AOL browser or through Internet Explorer. :(
However, I'm with these guys. Inside would be way cooler.

How about on top of the slaughterhouse, like he's the "drum major" or something. Perhaps instead of moving the head side to side, have it go up or down, or simply add a beckoning finger, as if to say, "C'mon, join the fun!"

Yeh, I thought about putting him on top. But then it gets rid of the other thing I was planning on top which is a large piece of pointed nylon which will glow like the crypt.

Maybe another way to look at it would be from this picture. Imagine the top part pointed and spinning with the spikes from the other pictures and the creature inside. There will be 4 different lights that will spin around. To get it to do that I need to build a large slip ring.

Good. Can you come over and help me with it then Hella? LOL. I think I will need the help. My friend gave me some flexiable foam. It reminds me of rubber carpet foam, but it is more like foam. I am hoping to use it for this project. Well, I hope.
Hella
02-10-2006, 09:28 PM
well it's a bit of a drive for me...lol If I were closer I would love to be a helper...guess virtual help will have to do for now. I'm good with bouncing ideas back and forth.
I think that flexi foam will work nicley in this project, I would think that if you are doing a cylindrical (sp?) prop, the foam we all know and love would not look as good.
you are going to be doing a how to right!?!

I might for you Hella. Of course, I don't know any other places to get this foam. My friend just dropped it at my house one day and asked if I could use it. I told him, oh yes, just leave it here. I am going to mess with it this weekend to see if I can torch it or not. It might look good torched. Or you might see on the news tomorrow about someone burning his house down due to a prop. LOL.

Well, if you want to have him inside the prop, how about making him seated at a control panel. Hook up some LED lights for the control panel "lights", and maybe a counter sign like "Now Torturing Number 47." or "Congratulations Bob, Torturer of the Month." Just an idea

It is funny that you say that HalloweenRick. That was idea 5025. I bought arcade buttons from ebay that light up. But the idea was mainly for a Zoltar machine with the guy inside.

DT,

Thank you for asking Hella.
Since last year I have been sketching different designs for the slaughter house. All those designs are in my in/out box at work. My boss just happens to walk up to my in/out box and said, “What the Hell is that?” “That is my new prop for this Halloween”, I said. I think he was just a little freaked from the pictures. LOL. But to answer your question, I think it is coming out ok. My flying skeleton has taken a lot of my time, but this weekend I am switching projects from the skeleton to the slaughterhouse. I am getting ready to test the flexible foam that I have, which looks like that rubber stuff for carpets. I am going to see how good it takes paint and what happens when I melt it. Does it look better melted? That type of stuff. I can’t really do anything outside until it gets warmer. Which really sucks. But I can still test different ways or positions that I can put the creature in. Maybe one will look better and then I will just stick to that. And I can make the top portion of the building with foam. I found really good foam spikes at work. They are used in our RF Chamber. They look very medieval. My plan is to copy the dimensions and make them out of pink foam.

LOL, that's funny about your boss...my co-workers just think I am insane when I start going on about the creations taking place in my garage, though they always want to be invited to the party...lol
I have looked at the flying skeleton, that is an intense project, but boy does it look good when it is done, it's on my own personal Monster List of projects to do in my lifetime, or maybe my next lifetime..who knows.
can't wait to see how the slaughterhouse project comes out.

Just wanted to show you what the flexible foam looked like. I have been testing it this weekend to see how it takes paint and what it looks like melted. I hope it really looks good on the slaughterhouse.

no really though, I like the design you posted here, I am guessing that you decided that the guy is going to be inside the opening. and will the top spikes rotate around the central piece?

Deathtouch- I love this design and the mask rocks!!! I would put him inside and make sure he is well lit so your patrons don't miss him. How are the foam tests going?
DeathTouch
03-20-2006, 11:33 PM
Oh, thank you. The foam that I have takes paint pretty good. If I use cheaper paint the look is more old world. Like it is going to crumble. Which might look good too. Thank you for your design. It gave me a few hints at what I wanted to do. I almost had the guy on the outside, but most people told me it would be better inside. I would agree.

This is where I got the idea for the spikes for the spinning top. They are about 4 inches about about 9 inches. I don't have a really good picture of it but here it is. They are used in our Rf Chamber. I tried to ask if they had any extras but it doesn't look good. I might have to make this from scratch. Oh, well.
