I am wanting to make a centaur(half human half horse) type prop. How the heck do I do that though?! Anyone got any easy how tos? I figure I just need to make a frame, wood, pvc, whatever, and then put paper mache over it.

To start you need a man, a horse and chainsaw..... just kidding.
I found a thread where a guy was making a life size horse that might help. I'll see if I can find you a link.
EDIT: Here's the link I was talking about. http://www.halloweenforum.com/halloween-props/76630-horse-my-funeral-coach.html

What size are you looking at doing for this, Gothic?

the head I've made for it is a wig head. so I was figuring about the size of a person, and not a horse.
Thanks joker that's helpful!

all i can say in wood is incredibly HEAVY, so i'd keep that in mind. foam and pvc or chicken wire are better choices. this is from experence, and it is hard to store as well.
pvc can be designed to come apart.

that is true. And since I'm normally the only one to set up and take down my haunt weight is a factor, no helpers to help me lift it.

You might be able to do something similar to the mentioned thread with a PVC armature, foam board and chicken wire.

this is the link to my photos.....
i don't know if this will help or not, but this is trois pistoles as he is under construction, i used pvc for a frame and 2" foam for the body, which makes it VERY light weight. it will have to be coated with something- { i'm using fiberglass and monster mud} paint... and then a coat of polyureathane because he will be outdoors. i hope this helps! :)

a few other things i thought of while having my morning mtn. dew........things i didn't think of then, if you use pvc, and foam,
prebuild the frame, this will allow you to make changes in the size and positioning of the legs, body and the head if desired, it is MUCH harder as an afterthought!
and the other thing i suggest... when you (if you) start with foam, work with smaller areas, {you have to cover it in something anyhow... so the joints won't show} i laid out the whole front of the body, and head in one big piece and ended up cutting the head off to reposition it, HUGE pain! i also cut full leg pieces, now i wish i hadn't because i'd like his legs to be in a different position....more cutting apart. this is the third season working with him.....and i've learnd alot of what i should have done, so i'll pass this on to you, and maybe it will help!!! good luck

Beelce, is that two buckies (one without his head and arms) put together with a tail added?
Later edit - Never mind, I just saw that you posted a link to the original thread:)

If you make a centaur, life sized based on the size of a horse you'd have a critter about 7-8 ft tall (and ~8' long). Hope you have lots of storage space. You can always make it more pony sized or go more along Beelce's tact (which is very cool, is that made from 2 of the the 3' tall skellies?).

I'd try to get a mannequin for the human part.

Might be a little smaller than you want, but a friends father found a plastic horse from a rocking horse or "spring" horse. He cut it in half, not for a centaur though, he made the annual horse'e ass award for the family picnic!

I've got a very large (centaur sized) soft scupture buffalo head. I'd let it go cheap if you need it.

Beelse, That is awesome!!!!!! I would love to make one of those too.
Spooky, Yeah it wont be horse size. I was thinking 4 or 5 feet long and 5 or 6 feet tall. more human size.
no thanks Darklore, i've got a head made for it, just need to figure out the body.
