I'm trying to recreate The Creeper from Jeepers Creepers and wanted to create a prop head instead of buying the $100+ mask and I was wondering if anyone had suggestions on how I should do it? I was thinking maybe I should mold the basic shape out of clay and then detail it. I also though of using paper mache but I'm really not familiar with it at all so I wouldn't know what I would be doing.

A good cheap base for a head is a styrofoam wig head from Sally's. They cost about $3.00. Thats what I used as a base for for Billy (SAW). I used paper mache to build the features on it

I've used 1-gallon milk jug, cardboard, wadded up plastic bags, newspaper, and duct tape to create head forms - in this case a spider head. Keep in mind the base of the head can be any cruddy material, as long as you detail the outside nicely.

Yeah, I wasn't too worried about the base, mostly the details on the outside. I think I'll do what multipleshauns suggested, and buy a styrofoam head and then use paper mache to create the features. Maybe even throw in a little clay. Thanks for the posts. They helped.

Make sure you are aware of molding and modeling with different clays. A normal clay like the gray stuff used for pottery will shrink when it dries. If you use a hard base, it will crack and shatter into pieces.
Another possibility would be model magic.

Great point..Oil based clay will never dry, and when it's in the cold it hardens. A block of Plasticine will cost around 9 bucks, but it will go a long way. If you roll it out pretty thin you can cover the wig head with a skin. Then you can build features and add details. The medium is subject to scaring if it falls, because it never dries.

I have used the styrofoam head, and celluclay for a base, and paper clay for the final finsihing touches, some times when it settles and dry small cracks form, just wet it down, apply a small amount more and good to go, just seal it for the weather if going to be out side, . check Lauriebeasts tutorials, they are a big help. Also the paper clay can be sanded if needed, good luck!
