I think cheese would be better, imagine that thing carved out of white cheddar, or maybe even formed by mashing together a bunch of bleu cheese.

Wow, you got that kind of detail with paper towels?? I usually need to use the soft napkins to do that. I love the painting - it really brings out the relief and texture of the "skin". I'm sure that John would be flattered.

Yes, I get that texture with towels. I dip the towels in the mix, wring them out (about 1/4 sheets). Then I lay them on the head and apply more mix with a brush. As I apply more mix I push the wet towel with the brush to cause it to wrinkle. Try it.
The painting technique was developed after decyphering John's e-mails to me about painting. He gave me just enough info to be dangerous.

I never thought to use a brush. I always just applied more mix and moved the paper with my fingers. Thanks for the tip, krough!

Of course he isn't talking to us now. I guess he is too good for us small haunters. Once you get in the big time you forget about the little people.

Hey, krough, did you use a Bucky skull as the armature? I'm going to be making a mess of mache skulls for corpses this year using a Skillcraft skull as the model. Also, any tips you can give me on coloring the teeth would be appreciated. I never seem to get that part right.

The skulls I use are CH-S2 (http://anatomical.com/bproduct.asp?pn=CH%2DS2) From ACC. They are lighter than the buckies, and dont make the prop too top heavy. I leave the skull inside cause Im too lazy to cut off the mache and reuse the skull. As such I order those darn things by the 20's
For the teeth I havent really done much there yet. Just make sure the 1st coat of black gets into the nooks and cranies, and then paint the teeth with a yellowish white. Just remember that they dont all have to be nice and straight. I like to buy the cheapo halloween ghoul or monster teeth and then just hot glue them over the skull teeth.
Like this (http://www.grimvisions.com/images/2005/IMG_1361.jpeg) or this (http://www.grimvisions.com/images/painting/painting%20015.jpg).
I want to take a dremel to a skulls teeth soon and see how I can make them look.

Wow, those ACC skulls are too rich for my blood. I'll have to stick with the mache skulls. I make my teeth from hot glue that I squirt into plastic mold cavities. I think I'll make some new cavities that give the teeth more of the look that you showed in your second example. Thanks again for the tips.

Otaku, let us know how the paper mache skulls go. I got latex, clay and cheese cloth and will be trying it myself with a plastic glow-in-the-dark skull I got at spencers last halloween. Please keep the hints and pointers coming krough. Is the painting technique you are referring to the one you described under the Painting Process on you're web page?

Huh? Cheese cloth. No. Its all paper towel mache. I may have used a very small amount of cheap napkin as well, though I dont think so.
The nose is ala pumpkinrot, its newspaper taped with clear packing tape :D

Yes Johnny same painting process just different colors.

Too cool, scary as heck and cheap on the pocket book. The only thing is I've never done paper mache. Anyone with a book marked page with a how-to? Any help is much appreciated. Krough, you are one talented person. I need to find friends like you in Spokane to get together with. I can do the mechanical side of prop building but suck at making them look good, that's why I'm doing a haunted graveyard with all Bucky's, even I can do okay with corpsing :(

I dont live in Spokane, But Seattle isnt that far. If you ever travel over this way let me know, maybe we could do a bit of prop making. I'm no that good with the mechanical stuff so we could trade tips

I wasn't trying to be negative, it's an awesome prop. I love your work. The texture is just similar to a cantaloupe.

And I wasnt trying to be defensive (Although it may have sounded like it). I actually appreciate the comments. After the cantaloupe comment was made, I was able to look at the prop in a new light.
When you stare at the same props all the time you sometimes dont see them as other people do.
