View Full Version : Tournament de Tombstone Discussion

This is the thread for the discussion of our second challenge for the year 2006... the Tournament de Tombstone. The focus of this contest is building a tombstone.
I'm looking for some input as to what rules and guidelines we should have for this one. I'm thinking a price limitation, maybe a size limitation and possibly one other limitation to make this a bit of a challenge.
Jeff has also offered to donate another prize for this one. Do we want to do this one for a prize, or just limit that to the $20 Challenge (which will be repeated again next year)?
Feel free to post all your thoughts and ideas and then I'll formulate the rules thread on April 15th. This thread will remain open through the duration of the contest much like the thread for the $20 Prop Challenge thread did.

Epitaphs or not could be a rule.
Could be. I'd be inclined to go with no epitaphs... see who can impress everyone the most with an epitaph-free tombstone. Any thoughts?

Sounds good. About the price though paint can get a little bit expensive.
Remember, paint will be pro-rated just like in the last challenge. So you only add the amount of paint you actually use to your total.

I understand paint being prorated, but spray paint is hard to tell how much is left.....It is for me anyway. Oh is ok to make whole tombstone from wood?

You might have catagories and have cost differ based on catagory. Like standard, Obelisk, or monument.
Frighteners Entertainment
04-09-2006, 10:29 AM
I don't think catagories would be a good direction to go.
No epitaphs is good.

You might want to clarify if it can be a monument or tombstone or headstone etc. There are a few differences. Maybe you could add a few points if your tombstone makes reference to Unpleasant Street. LOL.
You know me I have already been working on mine. It might not win but at least I have a tombstone built.

I'm looking foward to making one. I haven't made one in 4 yrs.
I still have 4 (4x8) sheets of 4" styro still in storage from 4 yrs. ago.
I could almost build a crypt out of them.
Zombie-F
04-09-2006, 12:57 PM
Ok, we'll make it a straight-up standard tombstone contest... no obelisks, crypts, monuments, etc... just standard tombstones.
How about a size restriction? Like say, no taller than 36"?
krypt
04-09-2006, 12:58 PM
Whats width gonna be?
Zombie-F
04-09-2006, 01:11 PM
Whatever you like. I think width will be a "self-controlling" sort of thing as a tombstone that's too wide may look a little bit ridiculous.

Sure, as long as it'll be shorter than 36". For photos of the tombstones, I'll want at least one photo with a ruler or tape measure to show the height. That photo must show the ENTIRE TOMBSTONE and the ruler/tape measure in the same shot.

Zombie-F

No animation. This is going to be a straight tombstone competition. I kind of want to see what kind of great designs some of you can come up with without the use of gimmicks or epitaphs.
Though, now that I'm thinking of it... maybe epitaphs should be included if you guys want to.
krough
04-09-2006, 02:04 PM
Does it have to be a stone? How about a marker? not all of the things used to mark a burial location are made of stone. Im curious as to why a height limitation? if there is a dollar limitation it indirectly affects the height anyway.
I would vote for no height limit.
So no electricity at all? How about light?

In my humble opinion, too many rules are a bad thing.
One of the nice things about the 20$ challenge was that there was but 1 rule 20$ or less in parts.
I think by having less rules there would potentially be more creativity. As we saw in the 20$ challenge, there was a wide variety of prop types submitted.
Thats my opinion take it for what its worth.

Dr Morbius
04-09-2006, 02:44 PM
What kind of tombstone has no epitaph? I had a great idea, but I have to lose it if no electricity is involved. I mean, how many ways can you make a tombstone? If they are all static with no writing? Maybe I'm just misunderstanding the challenge. ( Happens to me all the time!):D Also, who doesn't like prizes?

04-09-2006, 04:27 PM
Well those goes my idea for an interactive pinwheel tomstone with the light on the back. Ok, about 48 inch max? You want to say yes Zombie. Just say yes. Please...
You can't promote a contest with only a 36 inch length. It is un-american.

I think I understand this now...This challenge is about tombstone design.. not effects. Interesting. I would surely fail. I might have to sit this one out, but who knows. I might come up with some thing...might. I'm just not good at this kind of prop making. We'll see.
Zombie-F

All one really has to do is do a google image search for tombstones and look at some of the real ones that are out there to find a nice design to work from. It doesn't have to be an original design.

That helps..It might be do-able afterall. I should try, after all, it's good to expand ones horizons. I just wish I could throw in a special effect..Not animated, although it would really be cool to see rocking, or splitting tombstones, but lighting effects would be nice to include.
Blackwidow
04-09-2006, 07:04 PM
I don't think the contest should be limited to strictly foam. I've got leftovers but some folks may not and wouldn't want to buy a whole sheet of it just for one tombstone.
It doesn't matter to me whether we do epitaphs or not...maybe leave it up to the individual whether they want to add one? Also, I'm not crazy about the idea of a limitation on the height but will go with whatever Zombie says.
I do agree that the contest shouldn't include obelisks and monuments, etc.
One more thing...can we use any type of materials to embellish the tombstones? (plaster cupids for ex.)
DeathTouch
04-09-2006, 07:15 PM
I agree with blackwidow except for the height thing. I think there should be a limit but 36 inches? Most people can't see that from the road. That is why 42 inches is best. That is what I suggest anyway.
Zombie-F
04-09-2006, 07:22 PM
I only chose 36" as a size because it's a fairly typical size I've seen in real tombstones... but yeah, I can up that to 42".
So here's what we're doing so far...
Height limited to 42"
Price limit yet to be determined
Tombstones only... no obelisks, monuments, crypts, etc.
Make it out of whatever materials you can... wood, foam, concrete... whatever.
I will have a price cap on it though to keep the playing field level... a person with lots of money to blow could certainly come up with a better stone than a person with little money.
My feeling on the epitaphs is I want people to vote solely based on the appearance/design of the stone and not who came up with the most clever epitaph. However, I can see where the epitaph could be part of the design (like maybe a clever way of positioning/carving the epitaph), so I'll leave that up to the stone's creator whether or not to use one.
Now, does a price cap in the $25 - $30 dollar range sound reasonable?
DeathTouch

04-09-2006, 07:38 PM
This sounds cool... enough rules to make it fair without limiting creativity. As for the epitaphs, it seems like a lot of people like the idea, so how about we have a separate little contest for the best epitaph. There doesn't have to be a prize or anything, but just another way for people to show their creativity.
I'm looking forward to the contest now becuase I can finally put my Hot Wire Foam Factory tools to work!

Well, I'm a little disappointed to read the rules after thinking about what a good entry would be, mine was going to include animation. Maybe I'm dumb, but I don't get the difference between a monument, and obelisk and a tombstone. I mean, where does one end and the other begin? Clarification on that would help, not in the rules, just as a reply to this thread (I hate too many rules). And I have to voice my request to allow animation! But I will likely enter regardless, I enjoy these contests.

The photos of what to make are only examples of what is ok... you don't necessarily need to make yours the exact shape or size of what's in the photo. The photo is just showing you that we're looking for you to make a basic, flat-style tombstone.

Based on what was said earlier about the "stone skeleton hand" being OK, then it sounds like 3D "relief" artwork would be fine. Actually, I'm guessing it's highly encouraged. :)

I was wondering, can we put artwork on this? Meaning a 1/2 3D object. Like hands, face, etc. Something like the praying hands that you see all the time, but 3d.
For example

Sure you can! That's essentially the kinds of things I'm hoping people come up with for this contest.

Whatever lighting you use when photographing the prop will not go into the cost. I just included that "hint" to see if we can get some photos of the props under show lighting so the pictures look a little less "sterile."
Just remember... don't BUILD any stones with lighting inside them. :D

I've been thinking about epitaphs...Since lettering is a big part of tombstone making, maybe we sould all do the SAME epitaph,
This way, y'all can show off your lettering, and one won't be swayed to vote for the most clever epitaph instead of the design..also, it'll prove you made it for this contest, and you didn't dig it out of your prop box or "borrow" someone elses.(not that I think people here would do that)..what do you think?
What epitaph should we use?
I'll start...Ahem."Here lies Stumpy. How he caught on fire is still a mystery" hehe..:p

DR. i had mentioned this to somone else, but get some tissue paper and chalk or whatever.......get shape of the stone. Becareful and not mess up some ones marker though. I dunno if its a bad idea or not people at yard might not approve,But its worth a shot if its ok with the funeral home or what not. I have seen people with tissue paper and crayon or chalk copy the names of stones before so maybe its ok to do. Just a suggestion
Thanks Krypt..I have a design, It's just not mine. I won't copy it exactly, but let's just say it's not my IDEA.

Sure have. I prefer the wooden cross grave markers, and here's what I have so far. The wood came from a 30 year old fence. The half-skull is mache. I still need to add some stringy moss, webs and such, and detail the skull. I used similar crosses in the cemetery last Halloween and really liked the way they looked in the LED spots.

Don't think people will get the full effect as they will probablly be freaked out and moving at a high rate of speed in the opposite direction.

In the spirit of krough, I have decided on a design and will describe it, hoping I can figure out how to build it. Mine will be a tombstone in a tombstone. A tombstone shaped like a reaper will be opening his robes to reveal a tombstone inside. Impressions of skulls will be pressing against the reaper's cloak as if they are trying to escape. The crumbling tombstone revealed by the reaper will have a single word, 'VACANCY'.
Now the fun begins!:googly:

Oh no your don't. You can make your tombstone out of anything. Even Paper mache or chicken wire and mudd compound. Dont you quit on me now.
Dr Morbius
04-18-2006, 03:22 PM
LOL....Oh man. Chicken wire? Mud compound? I have even less experience with that than foam. The problem is, I really need to sand the foam for my design to work. If it doesn't sand, and I don't think beaded foam does, then my design is out the window. I might be able to sculpt in clay and plaster cast it, I do have experience with plaster..we'll see.
Black Cat
04-18-2006, 03:35 PM
Dr Morbius, I'm using beaded white styrofoam for my tombstone. It can be sanded, just make sure to use a sanding block with very fine sand paper. If you try to sand it holding the paper in your hand the beads tend to loosen and or break in spots you don't want it to. I did all my stones last year with white beaded foam and now I can't get used to working on the blue foam.
I also use a woodburning tool that Vlad rigged up for me with a dimmer switch so I can regulate the heat so not to over melt the styro.
You can do this Doc.

Great pictures krough, thanks! I don't know how to age wood like that, it kinda reminds me of how palms can have the inside rot out and leave the husk.
Those look like skulls to me, and it also looks like cloth on each side (maybe capes for the skulls?). I will be trying to do the cloth look as part of mine. Man wouldn't it be nice to be able to age the stones to look like those!
I finally got started on mine tonight by making some paper mache skulls with their jaws wrenched open, look which was inspired by krough for stumpy and friends.
I wish I knew how to age wood like that. I wonder if there is anyway to speed up the breakdown and cause new wood to look like that rapidly.
I know that nothing seems to break down wood faster than immersion in oil, but that would probably leave the wood unpaintable, untreatable, and just a plain mess. I'm thinking that maybe one of the chemicals used to rot out stumps, or maybe just good old fashioned burying in the dirt for a year.

I don't know if your up to experimenting, but I had a couple of ideas.
I have seen techniques which use acid, then heat to age the wood but that is more for making it darker when used for furniture. Looking at the cross 2 thinkgs stand out, the way the grain has become very loose and the way the sun has bleached it. Wood gets that same loose grain look when it burns some, I was thinking that maybe priming the surface of the wood with something and burning it for a while would result in the desired effect. Maybe undiluted chlorine would then lighten the wood, in fact undiluted chlorine may even contribute to the loose grain look. Just some ideas.

I found a few older wooden markers in a local cemetery. Nothing really unusual, but a couple have some nice shapes. These date back to 1905 - 1930.

And Palm Bay may hike up impact fees! what is this world coming to? Damn, I need the impact fees to stay where they are now, or I can no longer make an impact! By the way, HJ how much does it cost to live on the Space Coast? I can see they have a picture of Krough working on his new workshop..Good thing he's wearing a hardhat, with all the S*** we sling at him!

Well, It turns out that despite Blackwidows good intentions, I will NOT be using blue foam for my tombstone..Shipping doesn't justify it. I am stuck with Crap laden Beaded foam..(No offence Black Cat)..I really hope it pans out..I gotta get more creative than I can imagine on this..This challenge, on the outside seemed relatively easy compared to the 20 dollar prop challenge, but it is absolutely driving me NUTS! NOTHING is working out! But, I won't give up untill I have exausted all resources.

Read the fine print on the Liquid Nails foam adhesive... it's not for adhering foam to foam. I made that mistake once myself. It will hold, but it takes about a full week for it to dry.
I've heard of people using wood glue to glue foam together. I use Liquid Nails Heavy Duty Construction and it works fine. You just need to clamp the pieces together and let them dry for about a day.

I'm a little behind in the thread, but the best adhesive I've found for foam headstones has been 3m Super 77 multipurpose spray. It's a bit pricey at $11. a can, but it really goes a long way and drys clear and pretty much on contact. Only thing you have to watch is the ease with which you can glue yourself to the project your working on.

Doesn't the aerosol eat away at the foam?
Dr Morbius
04-23-2006, 09:18 PM
Aerosol doesn't eat away foam, mineral spirits based solvents do..aerosol is just compressed air.
Zombie-F
04-23-2006, 09:25 PM
I thought the accelerant in most aerosol-based products ate at the foam? Maybe not. I have some super 77 lying around. I'll have to try it out on a scrap piece someday. I wouldn't bank on it holding the foam together forever though.

Thanks everyone. Yes I used a router, actually it is by Craftsman and more like a Roto Zip with a router base. No I didn't use a template for the routing, but I did use a cardboard one to get the curves from one side to the next the same at the top.
I actually took several pics and was going to put them on hauntpics.com but the server said the site was either off or needed to be paid for or something like that. I'll check back later and add them, it will be sort of like a mini how-to since I'm not smart enough to have an actual website. Actually I could probablly figure it out but I'm just to lazy!!
DT, you won't beleive how long it takes to clone your daughter out of foam!! I started the day after Zombie said we were going to have a tombstone comp on the Sat night chat but I had to toss her out when he gave the height restrictions. :D

See I told my wife it is hard to clone kids now a days, and all she did was crack me a cross my head. Woman! You can sell them and you can't use them as props. Well, not with out the fuzz bustin it up.
I somewhat got my base done today. The larger piece that goes on top of base is being glued now. I use that polyurethane glue to bond my foam. It is so good that I accidentally glued a piece to a brick over the winter. That piece of foam is still on that brick as of today. I have not gotten it off yet (Don’t even think of a comment DR. M, LOL) Krough told me that posting pictures screws up the surprise. He might be right. I figure if you are going to see a pile of screw up foam that I made, you might as well wait for the laugh until the contest. LOL. Plus it gives me time to buy one from FE if I screw this one up. I can say it is under 30, that should work.

I finished the sculpt on the skull top of my tombstone..I never sculpted before, but I think it's turning out pretty good! the clay is self hardening, and should take paint pretty well. I used an enlarged printout for a template, and I shredded it pretty good during the sculpt.
