That is a heck of a prize. Anyone would love to have that. Very cool. Although it isn't about the prizes, its about creating a truly artistic piece...nah, its about the prizes.I wish I could do "artistic", lol. Sometimes I just have to get by with "cheap", "creative", and my personal favorite, "BIG". I really hope I have mine done by the 30th - but its taking forever since I'm trying to accomplish all three. :googly:

Wait, what? There's PRIZES!?!?!? :eek: ;)

<CONTEST QUESTION!!!>

I would like to try to save a few bucks by making my own black paint. The recipe I'm looking at calls for charcoal- and hey, I have a fire pit! SO... does burnt wood count as a fraction of used wood (how much does a slice of tree cost?), free (recycled garbage), or some other mystery amount? Sorry for being difficult and thanks in advance!

</CONTEST QUESTION!!!>

RoxyBlue
04-17-2010, 08:39 PM
Toktorill, to recap what we talked about in Chat:

Charcoal or ash created by burning yard waste would be free since yard waste is readily available and costs nothing but effort to collect.

Charcoal from spent briquettes would be pro-rated based on how much was used from the bag you bought. Charcoal made by burning scrap lumber would have a value assigned based on how large a piece of wood you used (see the rules for the contest for a discussion of this).

Any other items needed for the homemade paint (like flour) that have to be purchased would be pro-rated based on amount used.

Hope that helps:)

Tomorrow some more paint and pics... and finally posting either Thursday night or Friday. Thank GOD I'll have something to show after all this work!!!

I want to thank our forum folk for even putting on the challenge. For myself, it inspires me to create props "out of season". I have already started a second animated addition to my graveyard, and have planned a third. And since the challenge has the cost limitation it makes me think a bit cheaper in the creation, not to mention the vast inspiration I get from the other props I get to see.

Uruk-Hai
05-01-2010, 12:31 AM
I'll second that! There must be a lot of background work to running a contest like this and I'd like to thank everyone involved. The vendors who donated the great prizes also have to be commended. This is my first contest build and although it was a challenge to get it finished in time it was lots of fun and I now have one new prop finished. That's finished, not started and set aside to get back to the week before Halloween but actually finished!! :) Now the hard part will be to pick 3 favourites out of all these great props.

Toktorill
05-01-2010, 12:44 AM

I'll hazard a guess here for you, Tok, and ZombieF will correct me if I'm wrong:). I would take the "new construction" rule to mean that the item could not have been built before the contest is officially announced.

There's no rule that says you can't start thinking about what you would like to build...you've got nine months to design, plan and imagine.

As of this morning, there were 109 voters in this contest. That's the highest turnout I've seen for a contest since I joined the Forum.

yeah...there are a lot of voters this year compared to previous years.
I always wondered why voting had always been so low considering the number of active users.

The voting is now closed. I will be tallying the votes tomorrow morning to make sure all votes followed the rules and declare the winners after that.

Congratulations to everyone who entered. You all built extremely great props on a shoestring budget.

Congrats to all the winners! We had some great entries this year and everyone should be proud. Everyone's entries are winners because you have a cool prop to display this year for your haunt. I love this contest because I think I improved so much from last year. I owe that to this forum and the NY, PA and NJ Make and Takes. Everyone did a great job and thanks once again Zombie-F for all your hard work for holding these contest. Oh and I thought Hauntiholik mentioned about maybe breaking a record of the amount of votes people made this year?
