View Full Version : Heresjohnny Wallbreaker ghost

My $20 prop entry is a cheese cloth ghost that runs off of a salvaged rein deer motor. I call it the wall breaker because instead of breaking out of the ground, it is emerging through the walls of a house. It has 7 distinct movements; the body leans in and out, the head goes up and down, the upper and lower arms go up and down, and the head turns back and forth. Please see the video of the ghost in action at YouTube- 20propBlue-0.avi

The main form is made from wooden dowels and peices of 2x4 drilled with holes. Where things needed to move I made the hole large enough for the dowel to spin in the hole. Think Tinker Toys. The movement is controlled by fishing line run through small eye hooks back to the deer motor in FCG fashion. The head, arms, shoulders, hands and chest were formed with newspaper, cardboard and tape, then covered with black cloth soaked in an elmers glue/water mix. The form was spray painted flat black, then cheese cloth soaked in Stiffen was added to the black cloth covered forms. After everything was assembled, I added the remaining cheese cloth.
I initially built everything for the ghost to lean in and out, the head to go up and down, and the arms to move. Once that was done and added up in the budget, I added features until I ran out of money. This is when I added the hot glue/green LED eyes, and thanks to a friendly suggestion made the head turn left and right.
The pictures and video were shot with green and blue LED spotlights. Additional pictures and a how-to will be available on my blog shortly.

Very cool HeresJohnny! I would say its old school. When I was growing up my dad would get old displays from the neighborhood liquor store, many of them had multiple movements driven with one motor. I've always been impressed with the mechanics. Its good to see that ingenuity lives on.

amazing. This is really an exciting prop, HJ...the concept is incredible, very well thought out and extremely well executed. I see tons of potential for this type of animation...having the workings remain inside the prop opens up possibilities that were never possible with the FCG ( without major mods and headaches).
Great job!

Thanks everyone! I always wonder if I make any sense when I try to explain any of this stuff. Using the approach with the wooden dowels, eye hooks and fishing line was more affordable than I had hoped for. The key is to build it up one movement at a time. And it is very versatile. I encourage you to try the approach, I'd be happy to help.

Thanks everyone, it's so cool that you like the ghost! I know I am looking forward to putting it out next Halloween. Thats the bad part of building a new prop this early in the year, having to wait half a year before you can use it!
I think the mechanics are too complicated to think of all at once, I have to think of them one at a time. That is why I included video of each step or two as I built up the mechanism. BTW, I just learned how to have the you tube links have a thumbnail on my blog, so I have updated it so it is easier to see what the videos are. Hope that helps.

That would be great. I think if i could see it one motion set up at a time I could get my mind around the design. Trying to look at it all at once and I get lost.
Question: Is the weight of the "body" an issue?

Johnny, it's already been said for 8 pages now, but i also have to congratulate you on a very impressive prop. I would love to see more details on exactly how the motor mechanism hooks up and how the fishing line runs to get that great movement. Not only is the ghost very cool, but much more impressive to me is the genious behind all that design work and planning to get all that movement, that is very very impressive work, you are very talented, and i also will most definately build one of these if you put out detailed plans on it. My hats off to you Jhonny.

Bone Dancer, the weight does make a difference because the body leans in and out. The mache parts do add some weight, probably the hands add the most stress, but the motor has handled it easily. The use of the eye hooks and fishing line limits the weight more than the motor, if you have ever seen one of those rein deer in action the motor is quite strong. This design could be modified to use pullys at the highest stress points, in fact I was prepared to salvage an old set of miniblinds for the pully's if needed.

I went out and bought a tinker toy set today. I already have eye hooks, a good high torque 5 RPM motor, and fishing line I was holding onto for an FCG. Now, I'm going to sit down, stare intently at your photos and videos, and try and reproduce something close to what you have done..Wish me luck!

JAWS, thats good, that movie ruined the beach for me. The only thing I have thought of is an Internal Crank Ghost, but that seems kinda boring. Nice thing about tinker toys, you should be able to do some testing before you start gluing stuff together.

I cruise around after Christmas with and eye out for broken rein deer. Last year I only had to go a couple of houses up to get a couple. There are also available online here http://seasonaloutlet.stores.yahoo.net/buckmotor07.html, I have run out of salvaged ones and may be purchasing some new ones soon, there are some other designs I want to try.

this motor would work for this also. If you have any questions on how to power it or connect a bar to it please ask.

Thanks hpropman, yes these motors will work, they have the same RPM as the rein deer motor and so far appear just as reliable. In fact my leer ghost uses one of these. I think I will order some of these for some new ghosts I have in mind :)
Edit: okay, I ordered 10 of these motors, the price was too good to pass up! I guess I will have a lot of moving ghosts next Halloween.

Pure mechanical genius! :jol:
Hard to beleive there is just one motor driving all that motion!
Amazing work! I really love the shape of the head and how you did the hands!
This turned out excellent! Very creepy indeed.

Yup. I just finished building a second one, writing all measurements and steps down, and I am currently working on the document. Plan on providing instructions only for free (you will have to cut the wood and drill the holes, etc), and kits for a price TBD if there is enough demand.

Hey HJ, if you do put together a kit, count me in for one. I have so much to do that a kit would really be appreciated. I hope there's enough demand, cuz I'm really lookin forward to putting one of these together!! By the way, awesome job on the the ghost!! Hopefully I can figure all this out and use it for my banshee!! Just ordered a motor suggested by Hpropman(thanks H.P.) hopefully I'll have it running soon!!

(First, fantastic piece of engineering!)
What do you use for 'wires/lines'? I used braided polymer fishing line [60lb test] for an "FCG Spider" two haunts ago, but after about 10 hours even that wore through. I thought it would cut the eyebolts before it broke!

I used 20lb monofilament. Just a touch of oil where the line meets the eye hooks helped stop the catching and squeaking. There is not a lot of weight to deal with, doubt nowhere near the weight you spider had. One nice thing about this set up is it is very easy to redo the line if something is not working for you. I probably rewired mine 10 times while I was building it.
I have purchased some 7/8" nylon pullys to replace the 2 eye hooks for the torso, that movement has the most stress on it. The eye hooks worked well for the $20 contest, but I would rather have the pullys for the torso. The pully's were $24 for 100. This may help you.

Patience my friend, I am making good progress. I am hoping to be done by the end of the Memorial day weekend. I modified the design to work with the motor hpropman likes https://www.surpluscenter.com/item.asp?item=5-1587&catname=electric in addition to the deer motor.

LOL I know I chomp on the bit. I'm like a kid at Christmas.
I'm really looking forward to this, because with a new house and starting from scratch this year, I have high hopes that this will be the high point of moving props to show for TOTers.

Making lots of progress. The directions for cutting and drilling all the wood peices are done, and I'm about half way through pulling together the diagrams and words for assembly. We are currently at 28 pages.
