Ok guys,
We're on for a make and take July 24th. We just need to finalize a project idea or two. Basically anything that can be done inside so we don't melt.

I'll need a spider victim this year. I'm always up for mache. If it's something I don't need at this time I'd still be up for a Halloween visit/fix. Just picking brains. But you know if I make any sure plans, I'll get sick, so I won't tell myself anything. (But I really need a Halloween fix.)

Sweet, I am in. I need anything so what ever yall decide, I will probably build it. If it is cheap though. Are we doing this at Anne's or James' house this time? Same distance for me either way. If I finish one of my tombstones this weekend, I will be experimenting with my airbrush gun and I could bring that is someone wanted to play with it.

We can possibly do it at my place. But I don't have a lot of chairs and table space. It sort of depends upon the project plan.
I have four guys in my house right now, installing a new air conditioner. July - Texas - Summer - Day 4 - Ouch.

I've got a lot of camping chairs I can load and bring for everyone, plus I can bring my saw horses to make another table.

I'm in for the 24th, can swap mache recipes, corpse something, watch the boys talk picaxe and roll my eyes, drool over the airbrush, carve a tombstone for the heck of it, and take lots of pictures. I think that Jayson's and my next project is our columns, so that's not something anyone else needs - I know.... I'm chattering incessantly now. :)

I'm curious about the air-brush, myself.
spideranne
07-15-2010, 08:57 AM
We can do it at my place if you want. I've got room and it forces me to attempt to clean and straighten the house. :)
I'd be up for mache as a non-technical project. I've started some pumpkins and spiders already, but would love to play around with using the paper mache clay and other finishing techniques.

I can bring my airbrush and paint, but i am just letting you know that I have never used it, and I am probably not very good at it. I am just bringing it so everyone can play with it before you go buy one.

I'm very familiar with air brushing. I have an air brush compressor if we want to do anything with an air brush.

OK, thanks James because all I have is a big compressor that I use. Also, I am needing to build a grim reaper. Where do yall get burlap at? And about how much is it?
Dixie
07-15-2010, 07:12 PM
I have been looking for bulk quanities of burlap and erosion cloth, and have found it online between $1.19 and $3.50 (what a difference!) per yard. I think Jaybo found a good supply of it somewhere around town, he can tell us how much when he gets online.

I wouldn't mind working on grim reapers. But that's an outdoor project.

Erebus, are you doing a monster mud reaper?
Burlap doesn't hang well. No flowing robes if you use burlap.

You can get it at Lowes or HomeDepot. You'll find it outside in the Garden area. It runs about $10 - $11 a roll. The roll is usually 3ft x 24ft, which is 8 yds of fabric. This comes out to around $1.35 a yard.
It's not a bad price considering you will have to pay shipping on anything you order online. The only advantage I see online, is that you can get larger rolls of material.
Depending on the size of reaper you are building, it will take at least two 8yd rolls. The giant 10ft tall pumpkin reaper we build takes 3 rolls of burlap.

So will it be at Spideranne's? What time? I'd love to see the spiders you are working on. Haunted Bayou, I'll bring the red sleeper. Does anyone know where I can get beef netting? I'm not sure if that's what it's called. The stuff they use for spider webs. Has anyone heard from Joker?

You have to order beef netting online. We talked a bout a group buy.
BEEF NETTING (http://www.trentonmills.com/halloween_spiderwebs.htm)
Haven't heard from Joker lately. He is always busy or possibly ADD.
I read that a 5 lb roll is 60 yards?

Hey girl! I haven't seen you in a while... (probably my fault, i've been offline so much, lol) Glad to see you are coming!
Oh.... and some general questions.....
Do we have a food "theme" or just bring any old jello mold or fruit salad surprise? (hahahahhaha!)
Oh, and what do you guys think about making a phone list, and one of us keeps it... for times like this when we want to let Joker know, but can't find him online?

I hadn't thought far enough ahead for food yet, but I won't let you guys go un-nourished. Do bring your own drinks though, unless you like caffeine free diet stuff, which is all we have.
I'm definitely planning on getting some beef netting this year so if we want to coordinate a group purchase that would work great for me.
How about noon-ish as a start time?

Kewl. 2Dragon....where ya been?!
Trenton Mills won't take a credit card. We have to send a check or money order.
I don't mind doing the order and I can ship to ScareMe. I was looking around for dimensions.
I found a memo from Trenton Mills that states beef netting is about 8 yards for 1 pound. It is 24 inches across after you cut it and it is very stretchy..
I'll bring mine to the MnT.
5 or 10 pound rolls @ $4.77 per pound + UPS shipping ($23.85 for 5 pounds/40 yards) That is a lot of netting and it is a good price. The stuff lasts a long time.
Standard 20 pound rolls @ $4.23 per pound +UPS shipping
I have several cell numbers already in my phone but I think a phone list is a good idea.
I'll send Joker a text to let him know we are getting together.

Yes Dixie. I'd love for you to bring paste and/or clay. Especially clay. I'm not sure what the project is. But I've got mache projects to finish.
(I need Frankenstein monster shoes for a 6'7 creature. I was curious about mache clay. Possibly carving foam shoes and maching the surface with mache clay.)

Well Jayson saw my comment and thought that meant I wanted to do a mache project there, at the M&T, so I thought I would specify for anyone else that read that and thought thats what I wanted to do too. This was just going to be a side note to whatever MAIN project we are doing that day, I meant to bring the clay, and the recipe so people could see which one we use, and decide if they wanted to use it as well. I'm not going to make us sculpt something, then wait hours for it to dry, LOL. :D

Spideranne - sound like we'll be at your place. (If needed, we can do it at mine.)
We need to confirm projects and materials to bring. Sounds like we should make spider victims and help Jaybo with a wall thingie. On the side, we can share info on mache and airbrushing. Does that sound okay with everyone?

My place it is. I'll PM out the address again in case it's needed. It seems only fitting that we have about 3 projects going on at the same time for a make and take. When is our group ever focused???
Dixie - I too would love to have you bring your clay. I bought some of that celluclay with a coupon last year but have never done anything with it. Is that what you make yours out of? I'm hoping to have some mache spiders done with all their base layers of mache and ready to do some finishing work.

FYI, I plan on bringing several small guitar amps so everyone can see first hand how loud they are as speakers. So, if you have a particular soundtrack that you like, load it on an MP3 player, or portable CD player, and bring it along.

Great idea Jayson. I use a small guitar amp for my ground breaker. Small computer speakers do no justice and starts to distort after your turn them up a good bit. I love my amp. Just wished I had a couple more.

I sent everyone a PM with my address. If I forgot someone, let me know.
So to summarize:
This Sat. 24th. Noonish
For the technically minded: Wall Breaker
Side Projects: Spider Victim and/or Mache
Playing around with: Airbrush and guitar amps
Food: I was thinking of doing some kind of sandwich tray and a couple of other munchies since it's really too hot to cook anything. Bring what you want to drink.
See everyone Sat!

I agree, Thanks so much to Spideranne for hosting our craziness, and for having to clean up after us - you are golden!
2dragon, it was really good to see you guys, I adored your reindeer/wolf/rabid dog thingee, that think scared me in the daylight, I can't wait to see how it comes off at Halloween!
Scareme, keep us updated on how your spider victims turn out, I loved that super cheap technique - it was really good to see it in person~
Erebus - congrats on getting the wallbreaker(s) put together, lol.... you are a master puzzle maker. I can't wait to see how it comes out!
And just to make sure we are all on the same page - are we planning a meeting in both August and September? I'm to the point where I'm doing a (short) list of the remaining weekends, and want to make sure I leave enough open for M&Ts.

We are laughing cause most of us are not holding a prop we made, but someone else's prop. When Anne pointed the camera, we just grabbed a prop to hold, even if it wasn't our own. Erebus, Dixie and Jaybo are outside, so we took credit for their prop. I'm holding the lovely Spideranne's spider. :D

Darklore, I love your mummy/spider victim. What kind of skull did you use?
It's a (slightly larger than normal sized) greenish plastic skull I bought from Kroger for about $3 on clearance. It looks like it would glow in the dark, but it doesn't. I mounted it in a short piece of conduit with a section of lime green pool noodle to make a neck. Then I painted the skull and neck an off-white color similar to the wrappings.
I left a hint of the greenish color, which I really like. (I considered air brushing the color in faint areas across the body...but I haven't.)

And yes DL, you DO get credit for what you have already done to the spider victim, it is coming along very nicely. Again, I'm really impressed with how FREE that structure was, and probably would have never done it for not having watched.

I hemmed the collar on my Bride of Frankenstein's dress last night. If it's even appropriate to call it a dress. The mannequin is off white and closely matches the dress.
I am going to air brush her in normal skin tones while maintaining pale facial features. I can put this off until Saturday if anyone has a desire to learn about air brushing.
