My word, that thing is impressive. Looks like krough has some really stiff competition this time around. Great job.

Fantastic stone, hj! The paint looks like the real thing. Hmm, I sometimes wonder why actual gravestones aren't more like this?

After I saw the pictures for this a few days ago I knew there was no sense in me entering the contest ;) the talent here blows me away.

You should all enter anyway! Even if you don't win it's a good excuse to play "show and tell." Honestly, without participation, there really is no contest. Remember, there are THREE top spots up for grabs here, all of which have pretty decent prizes. :D

Ha ha ha(sounds like beavis) Zombie said stiff... Ha ha ha haaaa.

[Now my talking]
Man HJ that is really awesome. I don't think I can beat that unless zombie lets me use a hammer. LOL. The heads coming from the tombstone are just plain awesome.

That's what I love most about HJ's stone..It shows what can be done with cheap (practically free) mache skulls. This contest was worth it just for that knowledge alone.

Thank you everyone. This has been a great build for me, I learned a whole lot about mache and painting that I never knew before! You guys have certainly been an inspiration, and a great help!

Nice of you to say, but I am actually somewhat dissapointed how mine came out. I think we are looking at the winner right here, and deservedly so. Great job on the design man! I just can't say it enough!:D  :D

I agree, it is awesome. I haven't done much paper mache, since we get a lot of rain. I'm afraid of not getting them sealed well enough.

Do you have any tips and/or tactics that could help me, HJ?

i'm thinking after the contest you could share a how-to for this bad boy

Thanks!

I put on several coats of polyurethane, top and bottom, all around, before I paint (or after, depending on if I want some gloss in the finish). I got this from krough, who has had mache props survive the rain. I'm not gonna leave the tombstone out in the rain, but I noticed that when Alberto came through a few days back it brought LOTS of humidity, and the tombstone stayed nice and hard but the mache props that I have not sealed with the poly got soft. Had to bring them in from the garage, and they firmed right back up.

I have a how-to in the works right now making a couple of stone plaques with skull faces pushing out. It will not be the tombstone, but it will detail all of the techniques, including the painting, needed to build whatever you want that looks like stone with skulls pushing out.

Thanks in advance for the how-to. I have been looking at options for a fire place and later on for a wall.
