Inspired by the lovely coffin that graces the banner of the forums, I followed the links and used the plans from shallowvalley.com.
Here is a picture of the coffin in daylight. I used a stain on the wood as I don't own a blowtorch.

Here it was last night around 9pm.

Thanks.
I was originally going to go with a straight cross but my wife suggested the details at the ends and I think it adds a certain something.

Nice work! I also like the fact that the light shines through the cracks. I can just imagine this prop with a bit of fog!

It does look pretty damn cool. It would have even more of an authentic appearance when closer to Halloween you buried it or at lest threw dirt on the thing to make it seem like it's been exhumed recently and find some sort of material that looks like green slime that gives it the appearance that the digging up took place in a swamp. Maybe some old rusted chains draped over to add to the effect as well, hm? :jol:

I'll take three. Good effect with the light and there is any number of was to display them. Next to a hole and a pile of dirt with a shovel leaps to mind.

Very Nice! Looks like you used wood fencing? I have been wanting to build one from some scrap wood from pallets, which would leave some cool cracks and gaps, and seeing yours has convinced me it is something to build. One idea I had you might like, I thought putting the light on a fluorescent starter flicker circuit would be very creepy. Thanks for posting this.

It looks great. I'm planning on building one this year too. So many projects ... So little time.

Love the cross.
2 questions if you don't mind me asking. ;)
How did you cut out the cross?
What do you have for a light in the coffin?
Thanks

Man that's sweet great work there. Now all you have left is to put someone in side and let them try to get out that will just finish out the effect perfectly. So who you gonna put in there ?

I made a flourescent starter flicker light last year, and yes that would be good, though it would put out less light. I'm currently using a green outdoor spotlight for the light. As for the wood those are 1x4 pieces of new pine. I intentionally left small gaps as I built it and then applied some nice dark stain.
As for the cross, I drew a cross that is roughly 1" wide and then used a 3/4" drill bit to drill the 3 holes at the end of each point of the cross. Then using everyone's favorite tool (a dremel) I fine tuned the holes.
I think the whole thing took me about 3 hours to put together and stain.
If you can get your hands on some pallets this would be virtually free prop to build.

Great work the green light looks awesome, heres a pic of the one I built a couple of years ago. Can you stop at just one? I know I want to make a couple more, two is not enough!
I just used plywood and cut out the cross and adjusted the depth on the blade to get the lines. I used a 25w party bulb and flicker to light it.
I am going to add some dirt and moss this year and was thinking of having a heartbeat timed with the light.

I was also thinking of using old pallets to build a coffin, we have a couple places here that stack the old broken ones out by the road for anyone to pick up.
Nothin' better than free!
This has given me some great inspiration.

Coonce that is a beautiful looking coffin and I'm thinking about adding one of those to my haunt. They just add that little bit of jazz. Great job! 5 stars;)
Great work Coonce. Now if you'll just help me get Trish to decide how she wants hers finished I'd be grateful.

Coffins are your friend! :)
I did two (sorta) coffins last year- One was a similar Zombie-esque partial glower:

And the other was a larger scrap-wood coffin lid:

This year I'm going to add some detail pieces on the 'glower' to give it that more rustic look. Not sure what I'm going to do with the lid though- maybe have it being lifted up but a groudbreaker or something.

Wonderful! The cross detail is excellent.
I'm going to go snag some pallets from the construction site down the street tonight. I like the idea of free props.

Awesome, awesome, awesome.

We have something similar to that in our haunt and it has the rules listed on it.
