OK kids...Halloween is over and I know that we are all anxious to share stories and get together. The question is, do we try to get together in November, wait until December for the party, or what? I'm pretty sure that we won't be working on anything in November, since most of us still have about 4 weeks of packing up still to do..LOL.
Let me know what you guys want to do. I know that the first two weekends are no good for us, and Thanksgiving is coming up soon. It's your call...let's see what the majority wants to do. I'll keep checking back in here to see what you decide.

I miss you guys! <sniff!>
I vote for a November get-together! I wanna hear about your haunts and par-tays. Of course, I have no life, so any weekend in the month is good for me, but the 20th and 27th are only good for Pattie and Kenny. However, since Thanxgibbon is on a Thursday, would that really interfere with anyone's plans to come?
Of course, it might interfere with those who want to do Christmas shopping that weekend. Personally I never go near a store those days and try to use the Internet as much as possible. But I digress.
Anyway, if I had to choose a day, I'd go with the 20th, but I'm agreeable to any time.

I'm usually free on the weekends though the get filled up fast probably more so in december than november so I vote november. I'm looking forward to my first meeting with everyone and can't wait to hear about everyones halloween.

Nov. 20th or the following weekend works for us. Can't wait to hear about everyone's haunts this year.
I think we could use this time in Nov. to bring a prop that maybe didn't work in your haunt and needs attention before being packed away. I know of one person out there who needs help with a broken prop...
I'm going to bring a large pot of French Onion Soup along with homemade croutons and mozzarella cheese as my pot luck contribution for the group.

Hi everyone! So far, Nov. 20 looks okay for me too...especially if BC is making Onion Soup!
Glad I got pulled in all my yard stuff yesterday before the rains came. Now my foyer, living room and lower den look like an episode from "Hoarders!" The worst part of Halloween is trying to put everything away again...and finding room for the new stuff that creeped into the collection...

The 20th works for us. I guess this will just be a show and tell type thing? As for the gift exchange, all I can say is..."Sharon, are you out of your fricken mind????" I have barely taken anything in much less thought about a gift to make for someone else! :googly: I vote we skip December and plan on a Christmas party in January. That way those of us who may be planning on making something will have time. Just my humble opinion though.

The 20th is no good for me I will be camping with the scouts that weekend. The last weekend is OK. But if not I will survive. My Halloween was a great success this year had some wind trouble but otherwise great. We had a blast with the new electric chair. I posted three threads in the showroom to show the new stuff this year.

The 20th works for me. Hopefully I'll have gas money to get there (It's really tough out there). I'm looking forward to pictures, videos, and stories of everyones halloween.
Vlad, Rich and I are hoping to do a group buy for some more LED's. I need about 75+ more fixtures for next season. We'll talk during the gathering, but perhaps you can bring your information (Colors brightness etc) so we can pick out what we want. I've found I need Brighter reds than what came in the last order (For example) and some brighter white lights for long throw lighting.
hpropman
11-05-2010, 10:19 PM
If you guys are getting more leds I need some more as well. I also agree about the red leds they were pretty weak. we will have to compare the specs on the leds to see if we can find more with higher MCD (LUMINOUS INTENSITY), The trade off is the brighter the led the more narrow the viewing angle. There is some good info about this on www.superbrightleds.com
http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-bin/store/index.cgi?action=DispPage&Page2Disp=%2Fled_prods.htm
trishaanne
11-05-2010, 10:59 PM
I don't need more LED's because #1, I never finished the ones I have, #2, I don't know where I put the ones I did have that were half started, #3, I'm not doing a haunt next year and #4, I gave 30 LEDs to one of our fellow haunters that, if they ever replace them, will give me enough to get by.
I didn't get video of the haunt...things got WAY too hectic and busy and the video camera we borrowed came without the battery, which, of course went dead halfway through the taping. However, I'll be taking my pics over to have them developed so I can make an album to share.
madmomma
11-06-2010, 09:09 AM
There's so much I never got done or finished this year because of all the stuff going on. I may bring my light show machine that doesn't work and see if I can get it running again for Christmas. I'll bring a dish as well. I finally got 99% of my decorations back in containers and stored except for the chicken wire which I still have to bundle oh, and I still have to sort out all my pvc, tools and supplies and put them away. But the majority of the work is done...what a relief.

11-06-2010, 09:33 AM
Since we're not doing a haunt next year, I can't work on any projects at all this year, but it will still be fun seeing everyone. And since I didn't finish one project from last year, I should work on finishing them, but since it will all be packed away by then, it's OK. I suppose I COULD sneak in a project or two but at this point, I'm not going to be in on the voting of future projects. (I'm sure I'll be really missing it within a few months though)

To one of the gentlemen in this group who thought that we needed a compressor, brought one here and then we never used it....I need it out of the garage. It's huge and I need to start packing stuff up to list the house. Whoever will be hosting the meetings after we leave, or whoever would like custody of it can have it! Or, maybe the rightful owner can take it back :p
Joiseygal
11-17-2010, 08:20 PM
Damn I leave those damn compressors in the craziest places! I'm not sure if you noticed, but I said that in my deep voice to sound more convincing! :) Anyway I don't need a compressor to get me to want to host meetings at my house. Although no one will come close to the host with the most! :)

Happy holidays everyone. We're all busy with the holidays, but soon we should decide on a firm date for our first meeting of 2011.
VLAD.......... There are a few of us that want to get a group buy together for some more LED's. There is some urgency here since I typically run very low on funds in the winter months. I want to get started in early January on my lights since they are very time consuming and tedious. I just won't have the time later in the spring or summer to assemble them. I left you a PM several weeks ago with contact info etc. I'm willing to order them and spend the money. BUT, I need to ask you a few questions about the ordering process. I know you are alive (or at least Un-dead) since I saw your post earlier today. PLEASE RESPOND???

OK, since noone else has made a decision, here goes...I just spoke with Karen and she and Ken have decided that our Christmas party/next get together, should be January 29, to give everyone that is making a gift, time to finish it. I'm pretty sure that I won't be able to leave the tree up that long, because it's taking up SO much room in the living room. I'll see what I can do tho. If that works for everyone, just chime in. For any new folks who were thinking of joining us, feel free to jump on in the mix. It would be nice to meet you all before we start working on new projects, and that way you'll be able to help choose the next project.
Also, to all my haunter friends, please don't be offended that I didn't send Christmas cards this year. Between the kids and not having a car to get to the post office, they just didn't get sent. I bought them, just can't find time to fill them out and can't afford to send them anyway..lol. I just want you to know, and I can't believe I'm saying this, I miss you and love you all. OMG, I'm getting all Christmas mushy now! See you in January. I hope you all have a wonderful holiday.

I've been so busy around here, I haven't had the time to chime in but I've been reading the posts. I think January 29 would be fine for me.
Also since I don't have any addreses (except Patti's), I won't be sending cards but certainly want to wish everyone a

Today is the first day of Winter, I have my last math class, have to put up the tree (yeah, I'm THAT late!), finish decorating and organize my baking marathon. I'm getting tired just thinking about all I have to do.

Yes, the meeting is here on the 29th. We drew names for gifts, but since they all got messed up, anyone that doesn't have a name, I suggested that they just bring a gift, with no name, and then whoever is left can just draw from the pile. Does that sound OK with everyone? Anyway, as for the gifts, it can be anything, store bought or homemade, Halloween related or not, and there's usually a $25.00 limit. As for food, we do a covered dish. And everyone bring your own drinks, so that you can have whatever you like. I hope the weather holds out for us and we can get together. Bring your ideas for future projects as well, along with any pics or videos of your haunt that you want to share with the group...a show and tell type thing.

Also, feel free to bring photos or videos of your haunt so we can check them out, along with any ideas for projects that you'd like to work on this year. Does anyone want/need any cardboard tubes? I have a dozen or so - about 3 feet long and 4 inches in diameter (guessing). I was saving them to make columns on a small mausoleum type tombstone, but if no one wants them, I'll throw them in the burn barrel.

I'll take 4 of those tube Elaine....not that I'm making anything this year but I'll eventually be working on stuff for the B&B.
You and Irene are more than welcome to stay here. I'm sure I can find an air mattress or 2. Breakfast is included...lol.

Got to finish the gifts and to bring the laptop so that I can show you guys the electric chair and Eddie and Flo they were a big hit this year.

To all haunters that are planning on coming to the get together this weekend....PLEASE check this before you head out. Since most people have quite a long ride ahead of them, we are going to be checking the weather constantly and will make a decision Saturday morning depending on what these weather patterns decide to dump on us. I don't mind everyone getting stuck here overnight, it's just that I don't have accomodations for all of you. If you'd like to bring an air mattress and blanket, just in case, feel free. That way, if you need to stay, we can just slide all the furniture out of the living room and set up sleeping bags and mattresses...dorm style. However, and I know this may make me sound like a bit of a party pooper, I MUST insist that clothing is MANDATORY!!! hehehe....nothing like waking up to a bunch of hung over naked haunters all over the living room...LMAO

I am so sick! I'm hoping I will be better by Saturday, but I've had this cold since Tuesday. I have the chills, fever and I feel achy! I missed two days of work so for me to miss work it is definitely bad. :( I hope I sweat this thing out. I will keep you updated if I feel up to it. I'm going to be bummed if I don't go.

I don't think I'll be making it Saturday and I'm truly disappointed. I feel I've been a recluse this winter and need some uplifting from some very special haunters...LOL The weather doesn't look like it's going to cooperate this weekend for us to make the trip safely but we'll see. Well I just ate something solid for the first time in two days. I'm hoping it is a sign that I'm getting better. My neighbor Mike is so awesome he shoveled my sidewalks and shoveled my car out. I will have to definitely make a pit stop to the liquor store in a few days to show my appreciation. My ex also bought medicine and food so we would be good for the next few days. I'm lucky to have people that look out for Cassie and me. :) I heard that we are getting snow again?

OK kids....time to make an executive decision. Since some of our members can't make it this week and a number of us are still feeling like crap, AND a few have PM'd me to postpone until next month....I'm afraid we're going to have to reschedule for February. I know, I know.....I miss you guys too. However, the roads by me are atrocious, they are predicting more bad weather for the weekend and hopefully, by February, everyone will feel well again. Besides, with half the members not showing up, it will REALLY affect the gift giving..LOL. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE check in and let me know that you got this. Just for the record though, there WERE PM's sent asking if we would consider canceling. I'm just the messenger...please don't shoot the messenger!

I really wanted to go, but I don't think I would of been 100 percent and I don't want to get anyone else sick. Cassie went to the doctors and it isn't the flu, but a virus similar to the flu. Anyway it still sucks! Maybe we can schedule the next meeting early February?

Jello shots are like twinkies aren't they?? They should last a VERY Long time if stored properly. Otherwise I have a good address to send them to.
I'm dissapointed too.
Joe, if you have any leftover 12V motors (the vent ones) I might buy a few if I have any money left.
Doggie- If you have anymore of those shiatsu massagers or wiper motors, I might buy one (again if I have any money left).
Ken...... Are you even alive??? I've been trying to contact you for a VERY short conversation since mid-December. Since there are a few of us that want to order more LED's, and I messed up my own order last time, I'd like to know the proper procedure to special order the free resistors. This would be EXTRA helpful since I am also in the midst of my LED Tutorial. Dude, I know your SUPER Busy with work and your house and all. Since this next meeting is a "non-build" gathering, has anyone given any thoughts to our first project of the new year?
I know that Sharon wanted to get into Pneumatics (air) props. The least expensive air prop I can think of is a "Trash can terror" and that will still push the bugets of most in our group.
I know that Ken wants to get us into some welding, so that is an activity that will really expand some of our horizons, especially with regard to pneumatic props. I'm still looking for an affordable welding project we could accomplish.
I'm planning on building one of these if anyone is interested. It looks simple and might be inexpensive enough to suit our needs (probably about $50 total), and it REALLY COOL. There is an existing tutorial available. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iiJOaa5Llgk
Since a cauldron Creep build would probably span 2 meetings, that could average out to $20-$30 per month (Not great, but not bad). You could also make it a regular witch instead of a "Creep". I like the creep better. If we decide to make anything that spans more than one meeting, I suggest that we actually plan the dates in advance so that those who want to make this (or any other project) can arrange to make all the meetings.
Any thoughts on this, or other suggestions for projects for our first few meetings??
Possible projects I thought of:
Pneumatic prop of some kind (TCT??)
Welding project of some kind (pneumatic Pop up frame?)
Cauldron Creep $50-60
Attaching Relays in our Motion detector triggers to perform more than one function or activate our LED lights $10-20??
Paper Mache sculpt ($-??? Cheap?)
One armed Grave Grabber (http://hauntforum.com/showthread.php?t=23755&highlight=grave+grabber) using a deer motor.
A corpsing project of some kind (Full bucky, Blucky, skull or build our own from scratch).
Restless (http://www.hauntforum.com/showthread.php?t=21124) from the $20 prop Challenge
Color Changing LED eyes
Grave Peeper (http://hauntforum.com/showthread.php?t=21616&highlight=peeper) Doesn't have to be Jack skellington.

Geez, Everyones Sick. I suppose I'm "Un-sick" only because I am a hermit during the winter and have minimal contact with other walking dead.
I'd like to add this project to the "Possible" list. It's Otaku's animated groundbreaker. The mechanism looks complicated but really isn't. Looks like a wiper motor and some hardware, aluminum, and some delron plastic rod. we could probably build this for $40 not including any sound. It could be easily activated by our motion detectors. Otaku's Animated groundbreaker (http://www.hauntforum.com/showthread.php?t=24095&page=3) This link goes directly to the mechanical portion (See post #28). For a view of the final result hit "First" in the thread count.

Elaine, sorry you made all that stuff and spent all that time and money.
Karen, it seems that the ice is a major factor everywhere. Better to stay inside and safe.
Mary, they are saying that the storm that is coming in on Tuesday or Wednesday is going to be the biggest yet this year!! Are they serious? Bigger than the blizzard that left us stranded for 4 days because they never plowed!
I think I got in touch with almost everyone to let them know. I called Devin and Carl last night and spoke with Rich and Jim on facebook to let them know. Jim made me feel even worse, because he had just come in from finally digging out the hearse, which was still buried from the blizzard! Some great project ideas can be found on Hauntcast episodes 24, 25 and 26.
1) Funkin Corpsing. Taking a standard foam funkin (i.e oriental trading post) and corpsing it up.
2) LED Spots. Making some LED ultrabrite spots that run on 9 volt battery (can combine with PVC pipe as outdoor shield).
3) Fake wood boards - using our old friend, pink or blue insulation foam, cutout and make fake wooden boards.
If you join for the 1 year ($12.00) sub for Hauntcast. you can download these episodes (and more) that describe these projects. Also now there are detailed videos online that show how each project is done.
In the future, Denhaunt will be doing more and more projects on upcoming shows. Also, a 1 year subscription gets you access to all of the older shows for download.
I have been listening to Hauntcast for over 1 year and can not more strongly support it or suggest it. In that time Rev as supported us each month by listing the dates for our meetings. Now Rev and the team need our help (and the help of their fans around the world) to survive.
To give the show a try, Episodes 6, 7, 8, and 9 are still available for free download.
Thanks for listening

I'm open any weekend in Feb. We should pick a date soon. I would have suggested this Sat but it's probably too soon, and I'm sure some will need more recovery time.
As for our March project, the "one armed Grave grabber" is a strong possibility since a few of you have spoken up. It would be a relatively easy build. Whatever we decide to build, I'm hoping it's a complete project including the finishing touches (like hands, clothing, skull, etc).
We need a few more responses from everyone else, or other suggestions for projects. One of us will need to build one first and then create a parts list if none are available. We'll also need to get a group buy together weather it's wiper motors for the cauldron creep or deer motors for the OAGG (one arm grave grabber), or other parts for a different project.
Anyone else want to weigh in on our project for March? And A Date for Feb??

Most of my upcoming weekends are free and as far as the projects are concerned any and all sound great! It looks like all the weekends in February look open for me. Now we just need an official day!?!? I definitely can use more corpses in the graveyard, so the the Grave Grabber looks like a cool project. Greg maybe you can have a rough estimate on how much the projects will cost so we can decide at the meeting? I'm sure the projects will determine on the cost factor also. Not this time Frightguy, This is actually more of a Drink and think/ Show and tell/ Xmas exchange. You Know.... a Social thing. 5 drink Minimum (kidding)
We'll also be finalizing what prop we want to make for March. By Prop, I think I mean Propping Up all the dead bodies that will be attending since so many of us have been sick this winter.
OK, I did some quick calculating and here's approx what the OAGG will cost to make. It assumes that nobody has any of the following items.
Deer Motor - Group Buy?? approx $10. We can't substitute the deer motor due to it's reversing capabilities when under stress.
Foam Skull - Group Buy?? Approx $7 or less. many of us have one already
4' Piece of 1/8" X 1/2" aluminum flat bar Approx $4-$5 COuld be less if I go to my Metal dealer and get a few 10' Pieces.
Various harware (bolts, Lock-nuts, washer's, screws - approx $1.00-$3.00 each if we buy box of each and share and contribute to the cause.
Burlap, or Cheese cloth, or netting and and old clothes (Scavanged from our inventories?). Burlap is DIRT CHEAP!
Scrap wood 2 X 6 and a small piece of 2 X 4 and possibly some small pieces of thinner dimentions.(probably free between all of our inventories.
Ceiling wire and/or a stiff wire for protection against snags and a mechanical attachment to make the head bob up and down.(I'd have to build one to see how it's done). I have a TON of that wire, SO, free to the group. Also, it can be used to create the armature for the hands.
Possibly a SMALL and Cheap Hinge $2. A foam block was originally used but there isn't a lot of detail how he did it or how well it stands up to constant operation.
1/2" or 3/4" PVC for the arm. Probably free with our inventories. Otherwise it's dirt cheap.
Duct tape for the fingers. Latex and cottenballs(optional)
Paint (optional for the actual build?)
Hot glue (low temp?) and/or other type of glue.
Completed this will proably cost around $25. Maybe even less if we're doing it as a group and have some of the materials already.
It might be possible to make this in one meeting, possibly a few hours into a second meeting but I doubt it.
niblique71
02-02-2011, 01:25 PM
I think we can do this without a hinge, but we'll need to get some really stiff wire. By wire I mean small metal round stock that is stiff and cheap. I'll investigate. I probably have something here to experiment with.

I found This in my inventory
http://i998.photobucket.com/albums/af110/niblique71/IMG_8205.jpg
It's 3/16th" X 3' rod that I'm fairly certain came from Lowes in the metal section (Hardware). It's definately stiff enough to do the Job and yet should be VERY easy to bend into shape to form the Head support. I can't imagine that this costs much more than $2, a quicker and much easier solution than using a hinge. I have a way to bend, and secure it that should cost nothing extra to the group. No Hinge necessary.
Another solution is Threaded rod which Ken gave me a lot of. With a small metal or wooden support it would also do the job nicely.
The Only cost I didn't account for (I think) is shipping. with group buys, that shouldn't be much extra.
niblique71
02-02-2011, 03:46 PM
I built this in about 1/2 hour using that 3/16th" rod. It's proof of concept and SUPER CHEAP!! The rod is definately strong enough to do the job.
http://i998.photobucket.com/albums/af110/niblique71/One%20Armed%20Grave%20Grabber/IMG_8209.jpg
http://i998.photobucket.com/albums/af110/niblique71/One%20Armed%20Grave%20Grabber/IMG_8212.jpg
The two rods sticking up are to press your foam head into. That makes it servicable or you can change the skull from year to year. The extra bar on the small "hinge" block is a "Stop" to prevent the head from falling too far forward. The screw underneath is the Lever to lift the head up with the foward motion of the "grabbers" arm.
http://i998.photobucket.com/albums/af110/niblique71/One%20Armed%20Grave%20Grabber/IMG_8211.jpg
The small hinge block is just retained from sliding sideways by two small pieces of fuel line hose (SUPER CHEAP) and two small washers. Add the Deer motor and some linkage and the basics are DONE.
I held the whole assembly in place by drilling a hole in side of the platform and using fence staples to secure it. I should have used the smaller staple first since the larger one cracked the wood a little. It's still super secure though. I used a vice and a hammer to form the bends in the rod.
http://i998.photobucket.com/albums/af110/niblique71/One%20Armed%20Grave%20Grabber/IMG_8210.jpg
I have NO Idea if my dimentions are correct, BUT the concept works fabulously, and fits into our budget.
This is looking like a good and cheap "first build" for our march project.
Nothing is set in stone, but there is now a cheaper and easier way to make this.
Anyone else want to build this thing?

Oh Geez..... Ummmmm........ Errrrrrrrr...... Ummmmmm, someone has to build one first, then take measurements, and then test it. The tutorial for the grave grabber was rather vague so I took some initiative to figure out the mechanism for the head movement. I didn't mean to confuse anyone. I thought I was helping. It's actually VERY simple and should only take one meeting to complete.
I did some research and the Deer motors are $8.99 with free shipping (if we order 10 or more). Apparently they are in stock.
If we want to do this project (or any other project that doesn't have a good tutorial), I'll volunteer to build one, get a parts list and prices together, and teach everyone else. All you (the group) has to do is decide what you want to do.

Thanks Greg...if we get a group buy together for motors I'll take one. What I meant by that statement is that I don't understand any type of building stuff whatsoever, so it's like your're speaking Latin to me! I trust you though!

Hey Greg, that sounds like a great plan to me (but then again, I'm just an "outlander")
The 19th sounds like a good date too. I'm in for a group buy on the deer motor as well. Hopefully everyone will feel better by then and the weather will be more cooperative.

Greg, the concept looks good and I'm always happy when you guys figure ways to bring in a project even cheaper! ...and if what Patty says is true: If we start early enough we should be able to get it done ... before we reach the 10 drink per person average!. then this project should go really fast.

Have we chosen a date yet??
It'd be nice to hear from a few others about possible projects for this year (Not just March) Joe, Ken, Rich, Noah, Doggie, Digger, Etc.
So far it's looking like we're building the One Armed Grave Grabber. Obviously there's plenty of time to change our minds. BUT, If this is our march project, I'd like to build one before we actually have our next meeting. This will help me work out the fabrication, and get an accurate parts list and measurements together. SInce Ken (in his Boy Scout way) is sort of-kind of, passing the reigns to others, we need to step it up and keep our group strong. No, I'm NOT saying I'm the group leader by ANY means, BUT I'm willing to do my best to help out.
Note: I'm Broke.... I'm willing to do a group buy for the "Deer Motors", But I'll need cash at this next meeting in order to do so. Winter has hit my finances hard. That's why I've been trying to "Nudge" things into place.
I'm also NOT attached to being a "Project Leader", so if anyone else has a project that already has plans drawn up, Feel free to present it.
In my humble opinion, there has been an overwhelming lethargy within our group since we have taken such a LONG winter Hiatus. It's time to get moving and Involved again... Those who haven't posted recently.... GET POSTING and give us your input.

Greg...we are going for the 19th. If you decide a group buy, I'll make sure I give you my money at the meeting. If you have the parts, I'd say go ahead and make up a prototype if you can. I really like the one arm grabber. As for a group leader, I have the most important part of this group...keeping you all fed and keeping the ice flowing...LOL. Seriously, there is nothing that I can do that you guys haven't all done on your own, so needless to say, Kenny and I are out as far as leaders. However, we can follow along with the best of them (unless it's got a motor or wiring or anything technical and then we suck!) I believe that some other people expressed an interest in the grave grabber too, so at least that's a starting point for a meeting. I did ask everyone to bring a list of projects that they may like to do this year, so that everyone can compare notes while sharing pictures and videos. Maybe some of the new people that are thinking of joining us can help us with project ideas too.

Looking forward to the meeting on the 19th. The grave grabber project sounds like fun so whatever the cost please let me know so I can bring it to the meeting. I see we are looking for new project ideas as well. I'd be happy to think up a few and if one catches on with everyone then I'd be happy leading in it's design. Let me hit the drawing board and see what I can come up with. PS, if you haven't seen already I posted a quick hello video on my blog and will continue to try and do some vlog'n so feel free to swing on over to put a face with the Frightguy name!

Nice job Greg. Sounds good to me I have a deer motor already but I will take one from the group buy anyway since I only have one of them. The 19th I believe I am free (I hope). I have some stiff wire about that size from some lawn signs left over from elections in November. I have four U shaped pieces each one has about 6 feet of wire. so we are good for wire. Lumber I still have left over 2 x 6 pieces from the rocking granny build and plenty of 2 x 4 scraps up to 3 feet or so. I have the same motor that he has so I measured my motor and compared the that measurement to the pictures and the video and I extrapolated the length of the crank arm to be 7 inches long with about 1 inch overhang off the back of the motor shaft which gives him a working crank arm length of 5 1/2 inches from the motor shaft to the screw which joins the two bars (allowing for 1/2 overlap of the bars). I estimate the distance from the motor shaft to the 2 x 4 to be about 9 to 10 inches. the screws that screw into the top of the 2 x 4 that guide the second arm are screwed through some hard plastic tubes (we can use pen tubes for these). I think it might look a little better with a slightly shorter crank arm. To me the arm looks like it extends out a little too far.

I like the grave grabber idea too. Is this the one that Kevin242 posted last year or a different one? Are the deer motors getting plugged into an outside outlet or if not, how will they be wired?
Have the 19th on my calendar so pending unanticipated problems (we're in the middle of remodeling and have 2 people working weekends) I'll be there.

The only money I will need is $9-$10 for the Deer motor. If we need to do a group buy on foam skulls, we can look into that at the meeting. Most of us have a few spare foam skulls laying around. The rest of the Items you will be buying or scavenging on your own. A lot of us already have some scrap wood in stock. My hope is to have a Totally completed prop this time including fabric, skull, and hands.
NOTE: I'm really good with Mechanical things, but Not as good with the finishing touches, so if someone want's to take that on, then speak up. Otherwise I'll do my best to get an entire build together including fabric (Berlap was used in the original build).

Good job Joe, There is another measurement that will help me while I'm waiting for my deer motor. What is the exact measurment from the flat bottom of the Deer motor, to the top of the crank arm. IT might help me set the hight of the slide/guide for the grab-arm.
Also, could you do a quick test to make sure that your motor model reverses when it hits resistance?
As for the crank arm length, when I prototype a new Item I always make it a little longer and drill multiple holes for adjustment of the secondary arm. Once I'm satisfied with the movement, I'll have a closer measurement for the group. There is always room for personal preference.
I'll order my deer motor for a prototype.

As for the finishing touch, instead of burlap why can't we use actual clothing. I mean, if we put a suit jacket on it (from what I remember of the picture), we could distress them and make them look old. I have probably 10 men's suit jackets up in the attic that I'd be glad to part with. (It would be less stuff I have to pack up when we move) If everyone has a foam skull, just bring it with you that day. I'm sure you guys will post what types of wood and other stuff we need so that everyone can be ready. If not, HD is right around the corner, but it would save some time. Maybe you guys can print out a parts list to bring to this meeting so that everyone has one. Or just make one and I can make the copies here if necessary. Frightguy....remember that the February meeting is our "Christmas" party and we would love to have you join us along with any ideas you have for future projects. The only problem is that everyone is usually on their good behavior, so you won't be able to see them in their true colors..lol. Watch out when they get to drinking and using power tools....that's when the REAL fun starts! :googly:

I will be thinking of some ideas before the meeting to come up with for some future projects. I know one of them we wanted to do a monster mud project, but that would have to be one of the summer projects. Anyway I will be bringing my stalkaround costume, so someone can take some video footage...please! Greg the measurement from the bottom of the motor to the top of the white nylon crank arm is 2 1/4 inches. the distance from the motor shaft to the rear of the motor where the cords protrude out of the bottom of the motor is 2 3/8 inches. Yes the motor does reverse but it took more force than I anticipated to get it to reverse we may need a bolt for the stops instead of a screw. I went back to look at the videos and when the motor hits the stop screw they give a little before the motor reverses. I feel that they would loosen and work there way out of the board over time

As for the Deer Motors, I'm in a little bit of a quandry. If I order just one, the shipping doubles the cost. However If I buy 9 or more, the shipping is (apparently) Free.
Since MANY of you already have Deer motors, Is there enough Demand for at least 7 of 'em?? I'm taking at least two for my own use.
On the Other hand, I'd hate to have to place a second order for less than 9 since the cost per unit will go up a little bit.

Hi Greg. I am going to need a deer motor for the project. I will actually take two so I hope that will help with the group buy. Once I know how to build one of these guys I will most likely make another. Where are you buying if I might ask? Also I was thinking of projects. Now I am not a motor kind of guy and this project will actually be my first experience with building a prop with a motor but I do like to do a lot of decorative detail stuff so I was thinking of projects like witch jars, foe stained glass or frosted glass, creature cages or experiment jars, an endless well. Also I just saw that the soCal group did some green screen work. Now I don't have all the lighting equipment like they have but I do have video editing software and a video camera. We could do some video shoots and I could edit them for use as peppers ghost illusions. Just some suggestions but if any spark interest let me know.

Greg I finally had a chance to look at the video of the mechanism that you built it looks fine except for one possible problem the deer motors power plug exits out the bottom rear of the motor. So you will to do one of two things that come to mind off the top of my head. First you can cut the base 2x6 board a little shorter so that the cable hangs down off the end of the board (that is how the original is) you may have to move the rear stop up a bit. the other solution is to drill a hole or a U channel in the rear of the board so that the wire can exit the rear of the board. I went back to look at your video again and you may also be able to cut a notch out of the right rear corner of the board (the cornet that is opposite from the rear stop) to make a L shape base board to allow for the wire.

I was aware of that from the start. I built it longer to experiment with the geometry. I'll be cutting it to size (front and back) when the motors arrive.
One question Joe, How do you bolt these motors to the board?? there are no obvious mounting points shown in the original prop video. Are there threaded holes in the bottom??

He must have double sided taped it or maybe glued it. Mine had a metal plate that was screwed to the bottom of it and there seems to be holes for other screws. We are just going to have to see when the motors arrive. Maybe we can make a drilling template. The screws are self taping into the plastic of the case.

Hey all. I've been a little MIA lately. Trying to build a website for my wife's business from the ground up has been quite an involved little challenge for me, particularly since I have zero skills in that area. Give me a little paper mache and some Monster Mud and I'm good to go. HTML and all? Not so much.
Anyway, there's a light at the end of the tunnel that doesn't seem to be an oncoming train, and I'm glad I checked in to find out there's a meeting next week. Woohoo! I miss you guys. <sniff!>
I was ambivalent about the Grave Grabber project but like Greg's video enough that I'm now on board. Also, grimghost's recommendation of the Funkin Pumpkin corpsing from Hauntcast is also good (grim, I'm with you on the awesomeness of Hauntcast!) and might be a good one to do a bunch later (if we can find the pumpkins anytime before September/October).

OK, it's a little over a week to go before we FINALLY Meet. Hopefully the weather cooperates and we can finally put this thread to rest (it's been up far too long).
Patty, the Deer Motors are $10 (or less). Any extra money I will put into a hardware fund for pesky items that wouldn't make sense for people to buy individually. If your tight on Money, they are $9.
As I mentioned, I will order more Deer motors after our meeting. If anyone has a little extra money, I would get more than one motor through the group buy. To buy just one motor, the cost with shipping is $19. These motors are EXTREMLY versatile, quiet, Weatherproof, and STRONG. There are SOOO Many uses for haunting, that if you want a few for future projects, I'd get 2 or more if you can afford it.
Rich, GLAD TO SEE YOU online again. I assume you will want a deer motor?
Patty, Is it possible to get a group member list together? I personally wouldn't mind giving my address and Phone number to everyone in our group.
Also, as stupid as this might seem, Have you ever used name tags?? Am I the ONLY one that is terrible with names??? Some of you I only know as your Haunt forum Nickname. Some I can't remember at all. Since We seem to have a new member or two each meeting, It would be nice to list your real name and haunt forum alias on a name tag. Just an Idea which I know would help new members (and me) a LOT. Just a thought.

I'll give you the money for both motors at the meeting. Since I'm not haunting this year I'll just be using the one for this project and packing the other one away for safe keeping.
As for a master list of names, yes, we did start one. I'll add everyone else's names to it and print it up for everyone. It includes names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses. See you next week...(fingers crossed)

The Deer motors will be a lot cheaper if you do the group buy. As long Most people pay for thier motors at our Feb Meeting, I can still make sure you get a few through the second group buy. You won't need them till March. Just pay for your motors then. Besides, if you get your motors on your own, we might not make the 9 minimum to get free shipping on the secound round.

Greg,
Sorry, but I won't be needing any deer motors this time. I got 5 last time from Joe and still have a couple left over so I'm good.
But that's some jig you got there for making hands. As an alternative, I make my hands from a homemade paper clay recipe, making each individual bone in the fingers (or a reasonable facsimile thereof) and passing a wire through the middle so that they can be posable. I'll try to post some pictures of my hands when I get a chance (did I mention I was reaching the end of the website tunnel, but hadn't quite broken through the mountain yet?).
I'll try in get in touch with Jeff tonight too.

However, Matt decided that I may need to know so I can get the playroom ready for guests. SO...IF they decide to show up, I'll be kicking them out of the house to go to his fathers during our party but that means that now my spare room will be occupied by FIVE people. If anyone needs a place to stay that night, I can throw some air mattresses on the living floor. I'm trying to talk them into coming the following week....this was just a heads up for sleeping arrangements.

The first order of "Deer Motors" came in this afternoon (That was really fast). The prototype is now finished except for paint and fabric. I spent a few hours "Tweaking" the geometry and it's working very well. I want to see if I can make it even easier and faster to build but so far I'm very happy.
I need to say a a little bit about these "Deer motors". I've seen them in action inside countless props online, and now I know why. This is my first experiance with them and I am THRILLED at thier performance. They are exceptional motors, Powerful, and VERY QUIET!! If I could swing it I would by 10 for myself. I highly recommend taking full advantage our second round group buy. Get as many as you can afford since shipping will be free.
The prototype has been running for 3 hours now flawlessly. I was a little Blase' about this build at first, but it really is a COOL PROP. I think everyone will be very happy with it.
I'm going to start a parts list and taking measurements. I should have that ready by our Feb meeting.

Sounds awesome! I am looking forward to shopping for the supplies and I can't wait to work with these motors. I have a lot of ideas in mind for my haunt this year and hopefully I can put the deer motors to some good use.
Also, I was wondering if anyone has experience with wiper motors? I bought one last year but couldn't seem to hook up the leads correctly. I can bring it with me to this upcoming meeting and maybe if anyone is familiar with them I can be shown how to hook it up correctly?

We have done a few projects with wiper motors. We have some very knowledgeable guys in our group that could help you out. Matter a fact I have a project that they will kill me if I bring it to this meeting with a wiper motor that needs to be worked on. If you just need it hooked up to get it to work than I'm sure someone will help you out, so I would bring it. Only one more week than we are finally going to have our meeting...YAY! It has been way to long and we better have nice weather or I'm going to kick some mother nature ass!

I'll be bringing a new batch of sausage and peppers along with the jello shots (I made sure no one ate any - and I hope they are still good). I'll bring along a cake too.

I had a sneaking suspicion that these deer motors weren't designed to "Auto-reverse" repeatedly. The trouble began about 4 hours into the first test when it stalled (wound't auto reverse). A gentle nudge put it back in motion. It took another 3-4 hours before it did it again, But since then, the stalls were getting More and More frequent. By the end it would stall every 10 minutes and that is TOTALLY Unacceptable.
Sooooo.......I redesigned it from the original. We can get the same movement while avioding the auto reverse. The Movement is very close to the original, but I had to add some additional parts. It probably won't add much to the build cost. In fact, Now we could build this with Joe's "Vent Motors".
As far as the Deer motors, I still think they are preferable for this build. They are stronger, Quieter, Built for the outdoors, and you can plug them into your regular household current.
I'll bring the grabber to the meeting and we can discuss what everyone want's to use for a motor.

Joe,
Deer motors. Vent motors. Wiper motors. What's the difference? All motors look the same to me! :D Actually, though, I do have a deer motor from a deer I got at the Salvation Army last year, so I'm still good on that front (I will not buy, I will not buy!).
And if I recall correctly "someone" said they had to wait for the cooler months to make peanut butter balls. Well it's been pretty darn cool and since we've been promised these treats for like forever, I'm hoping that "someone" finds some time this week to make some. <cough!> Sharon <cough!>
And just to clarify, are we just partying this week and looking at Greg's grabber, or are we building stuff too? I wanna know how trashed I can get and still terrify Jeff on the ride home.

As most of you Know I've been working on a viable prototype for our March project. Although the principals of the OAGG are very simple, this has been a long process of creating a prop and tutorial that will be cheap, reliable and long lasting. I'm glad that I did the research and discovered the flaws and corrected them before we built 15 of 'em.
As I mentioned, I redesigned the project so it won't use the "reversing" capability of the deer motors. The New design has been running flawlessly now for 12 hours and I'm now confidant of it's durability. It required some extra "linkage" and moving the location of the motor. The Movement is only slightly different from the origina but it will last for MANY YEARS. lHere's a short video of the improved One Armed Grave Grabber.

Nice Job Greg! I have a question though do you need to have the bar under the PVC pipe that goes to the hand? Could you just use a longer PVC pipe and bolt it directly to the U channel saving the cost of that bar?

That's a good question Joe, I don't have a concrete answer for you, although I do believe the aluminum will make the prop last 2-3 times longer for the cost of $1 worth of aluminum. Given the amount of time invested in the prototype to create a rock solid prop, I'm not going to change the build. Your welcome to make it that way and let me know how it held up.
The new version of the prototype now has 27 hours on it with no noticable wear on the linkage

Joe got me thinking last night, We can probably do without that extra aluminum bar under the CPVC tubing (Grabber arm). I'm going to consider that as optional. If the tubing wears out, you can add that aluminum bar afterwards. I'm also going to look into reducing the cost even more. I'm headed out to my local metal supplier since Lowes and HD are kind of expensive for aluminum and steel. Besides I always like to have a little extra metal on hand.

Greg I saw you tube video last night where this guy made a grave crawler using the shelf brackets with the slots in it like these. They were much cheaper to purchase then aluminum a possible option for this or a future prop.

WOW...you guys are getting here EARLY!!! Noone else will be here till between 1-3..lol. Just heard from Karen...she said there is a state of emergency for New Jersey today because of the wind. She lost power, internet and phone service up there. There are trees down all over the place too because of the wind. Kenny had to go to his moms a little while ago, about 6 miles from here, and he said he had to fight to keep the car on the road. So, BE CAREFUL! Apparently the winds are supposed to pick up even more down here as the day goes on.

OK, now that things have calmed down a little, let me start by saying how great it was to see everyone again. It had been way too long. Thanks for coming by to hang out!
To my secret Santa, thank you...I LOVE this guy. And to Kenny's secret Santa, thank you too. He LOVES it.
To the "new guy", Jay (frightguy), it was great to finally meet you. Since you said you'll be back, I can only assume that A), you are as sick and twisted as the rest of the group or B) they didn't try hard enough to scare you away. I look forward to seeing you again, when they are in their true haunt form!
It was great seeing Irene again. Feel free to come back any time!
I think that the video Sharon took should be posted AS RECORDED, no editing allowed. Let the rest of the forum members see what this group is really like....then they will know that I am not exaggerating when I say things..lol.
Thanks to everyone for bringing food, snacks, drinks, plates, cups, etc. Having a houseful of guests here for the next week, the leftovers will be put to good use. And since it was a VERY long day yesterday, (hanging out with probably 25 haunters in very close quarters and then sitting up with a sick baby until 6:00 AM and having to be at a bridal show by 11:00 AM,) I am in no way interested in cooking today.
And Elaine and Ralph, I can't imagine what that light was used for at the hotel last night, nor do I want to try!

Awesome prop Jeff! Vlad and BlackCat did a great job and I love the changes! It fits right into your haunt!

Imagine the luxury of keeping your haunt up year round so you could plop a new prop into it to see how it works. I do like the plastic bag on the head though. Funny, as soon as Jeff saw it sitting in the dining room covered in the black plastic, he said he hoped that's the way it was intended to be.
Strange boy, that Jeff.

THANKS GUYS!!
I actually hung up the metal thingy in the slaughter house. My son thought it looked like something that went over a horses mouth. I hung up some of the antlers that JoiseyGal gave us too. I'll post pics....
