I thought we needed to start a new thread cause our last thread said Sept. and I didn't want the other Make & Take groups making fun of us.
It sounds like none of us remember the talk about the foam, but there does seem to be interest in it. Are we just doing a Drink & Think and talk about the group buy, and what we are hoping to get finished this year? Or does anyone want to volunteer their place for a tombstone party? As always, I will volunteer my place, but I doubt if anyone wants to drive that far.

It sounded like most wanted to do a drink and think. I'm pondering only a couple projects for the year. Although willing to help with others.
For me...a MIB (monster in a box), a standing mad scientist, and recently I've given serious thought of an Axworthy. And tombstones if we do some foam.

Hey, I have an idea. Why don't we have the meet and greet the same day as the super bowl? We can meet in the afternoon, and go to the game that night. Who wants to pick up the tickets for the group? Your treat Darklore? :D
Cole&Jacksdad

I live about 2 miles from Cowboys staduim. So I guess I would be the one to get the tickets.
DarkLore

Let's call 2 miles the closest since he's probably already bought us tickets. (Hope he got us some nice seats.)
What kind of project list do yall have going? Surely we can get together on something. How about ground breakers or something?

My next project is going to be a pneumatic lift for a evil clown in the box. My coffin jumper mechanism I just built is in the pneumatic section. I am also making a bunch of LED spots. I am open to other projects as well. My Arduino(my first microcontroller) should be here any day, so if anyone knows anything about those, I could sure use the help. OH, I can weld if anyone needs a prop welded.

I say we have either a think and drink or make and take on Feb 12th then go to this haunt that will be open.

Thanks for the info. I'd love to make a pumpkin creep but don't have welding tools. If you are up for it, let me know. I'm about a mile east of the stadium.
I just got tasked with some company assignments in the first couple weeks of February. Can't do anything at that time.
It's still my favorite prop Woody...

That is pretty cool. Yes let's get together after you get your assignments done(always looking for a reason to work on props and weld). Are you off Great South West by chance? I am about 2 miles North of The stadium. I am over by River Legacy Park.

I don't think I'll drive all the way to Dallas for just drinks. Wish I lived closer, or could find a haunter around here to share the drive with. Really miss Slimy. If we do a make n take I will try to make it. Jaybo suggested middle to late Feb.. Works for me.

I can't do any more large projects. I don't have the power to hook them up or the time to set them out. I can work on small ones and visit.
My nephew is getting married the saturday before Halloween so I don't even know if I'll be in town on 10/31.

I'd love to learn how to do some pumpkins like Denhaunt showed. I have some funkins, but I'd also like to learn how to paper mache some. I also need to work on tombstones. What kind of glue works on styrofoam? Does gorilla glue? I have pool noodles. I saw, somewhere, a window/arch made with them. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?
DarkLore
01-31-2011, 09:02 PM
Could you post a link to Denhaunt's pumpkin thread? Are you referring to the pumpkin thieves?
I wouldn't mind working on tombstones or mache. But I need some foam if we're doing stones. (I could use some groundbreakers...mache/liquid nails.)

But I saw that one of the other groups was going to work on a one armed grave grabber (http://www.fulcrumsites.com/haunt/html/the_one-armed_grave_grabber.html), and thought yall might like that as a project. DarkLore has said he would host, and Cole&Jacksdad is right, the date would be the 26th. DarkLore, what time do you want people showing up on your doorstep? We had also mentioned some time doing a drink and think. What does everyone think about doing one right after the M&T. We could go out and get a bite to eat and have a few drinks. Rick and I are going to get a hotel and spend the night in Dallas so we could be there. If all are busy I can understand that too.

scareme
02-20-2011, 12:47 PM
niblique71 did a breakdown of the price in the first post of March Gathering-Is It Spring Yet, in the NJ?PA M&T. Do you think we have enough time to get all the supplies? And he mentions it's cheaper if we buddy buy. I think that's the only way I'll be able to afford to do it. I'm giving Haunted Depot all my money. :D But I'm getting great things in return.
After looking over his list I'm not going to worry about the hands, paint or clothes at this time. I can take care of those when I get home,

Is It Spring Yet (http://www.hauntforum.com/showthread.php?t=25737)
I'm not big on following exact tutorials and supplies lists.
The only thing we need to obtain in mass would be deer motors. Reversable motors used in the tutorial would be preferrable, but a basic black gear motor would work if we deviate on the movement. Could we get the deer motors ordered in time? If not...are they sold at any local store like walmart? If not, we could contact Kindys and see about getting them ordered and shipped before the week ends.
The rest of the mechanism materials can be purchased locally at Home Depot with the exception of a foam skull. I buy those at Michael's when the season comes around...(most of us may have one). Party city might have them.
Most of it is just scrap pvc and wood, with the exception of the aluminum bar.

Hey, I looked-up the shipping for 1 to my address.
There is UPS ground for $9.09
and 2nd day for $21.28
If the parts are ordered on Monday, they might get to you by Saturday if they can ship it that day. Second day is kinda pricey.

That's about what I expected. If ordered Monday, ground should easily get here by Friday. How many are coming and want to order a motor? We need a count pretty much by end of day today if we want to do this.

I'll take a motor. But we are getting such a late start, if they don't come in, we might have to wait for the next M&T. And that way we could all pay you first, if you wanted. But that leaves us with having to come up with another project. How much is a motor anyway?

What about Decorators Warehouse in Arlington? They may have the motors. I will drive there in the morning and see.
Jaybo
02-20-2011, 11:23 PM
You don't have to have the deer motor. You can use one of the black gear motors everyone was using for their peeper gravestones last year. The way Niblique built his, it is basically a modified peeper mechanism laid on it's side. It doesn't even use the reverse function of the deer motor. The deer motor is nice because it can just be plugged straight into an AC outlet and already has an arm attached to the shaft, but any gear motor that turns at about 5rpm would probably work.

I wondered about Decorator's Warehouse...but I've never been in there. I was also thinking I had seen them some place like Michael's or Hobby Lobby.
The problem with using black gear motors is, we wouldn't have a bunch of those either.
Where's a good place to get burlap?
Jaybo
02-21-2011, 01:08 AM
You can get burlap in the gardening section of Home Depot. Unless they've recently increased the price of the burlap, it was cheaper than any other place. Well, unless you buy in bulk online.

DarkLore
02-21-2011, 11:16 AM
It appears that Decorator's Warehouse doesn't have the motors. I will be contacting Kindys (http://www.kindys.com/products/decorating-accessories/replacement-parts)around lunchtime. Due to President's Day, they may not be able to fulfill the order until tommorrow.
DarkLore
02-21-2011, 12:53 PM
I've emailed Kindys via their online contact form. However, there is no contact phone number on their website (that I can find). I'm not sure if they are a year 'round business. There is nothing to indicated whether an order would be fulfilled in time to arrive or not. If I hear back from them, I will try to place an order. If not, I think we'll need an alternate source.
Any ideas on other suppliers of the deer motor that auto reverses on resistence?

Sorry DAngel. If I figure a way to openly stream our get together, I'll post something here.
As for motors, I did place an order today. I agree with Jaybo, it's definitely easier to have a power cord rather than hookup an adapter.
Note - Niblique71 pointed out...using the autoreverse prematurely kills the motor. Build this using 360 movement.
Due to it being President's Day...I'm figuring they get packaged and shipped out tommorrow if we're lucky. If the motors get here in time, sweet. Scareme, if the motors don't arrive by Sat, I've got a black gear motor we can use to complete a prop for you to take back to OK.

I have a snippet of video but it's pretty dark. I was waiting for Scareme to upload some photos. We deviated in our black gear motor implementation, but the prop seemed to work well...even with a heavy mask over a foam head.
Yes...the other motors came on Monday and I started a build for myself. My only comment so far....be careful how heavy you make the head and hand. I coated one of the hands Erebus, Bayou, and Scareme made on Sat., with liquid nails. That made the arm quite heavy and thus more drag. I'll find out if it's too heavy when I finish.

Maybe we could teach the scouts how to build grave grabbers? lol. I can be available during the week, sometime after work. Thurs (tommorrow) I'll be busy.
Hmmmmm...... I wonder what type of merit badge they would get?

I modified the mechanism a bit. I have a rubber band that holds the head taunt. And I used heavy fishline to attach the pivot screw to the motor arm. Due to the distance of the head movement, I raised the head pivot mount up a bit.

Below are links to see the movement. Sorry, I'm not sure how to embed the movies without putting them on something like youtube.

There should definitely be a Haunt merit badge. DarkLore's Merit Badge requirements...(do you qualify?)

2. Demonstrate basic understanding of theater makeup, latex appliances, or a homemade blood recipe.
3. Create a prop using at least one of the following mediums: mache, pvc, corpsing (latex and cotton), carved foam, dry ice.
4. Build a tombstone with an epitaph or theme you created
5. Using a motor, servo, controllers, or other...create a prop that incorporates movement
6. Through diagram drawing or physical implementation, demonstrate a circuit using one or more 5mm leds.
7. Post a completed prop on a forum or how-to website. Must include photos, description, and materials used.

He may be getting skinny, but he's building up his arms carrying a hose and his pack up mega flights of stairs.

just remember, folks...in that photo of me and Erebus....he is really, really, really thin, which makes for the illusion that I am really, really, really thick
:zombie:
Oh...I see that DarkLore used Erebus' perfect, back-scratching, rake hand for his prop....
Mine looked like something a pre-k student would make. DOH!

Actually... Both of you made right hands. After twisting around the fingers, I thought....hmmm. Maybe it should be palm up, and I might get a few donations with it?
