On Sharps suggestion, I went ahead and started this thread so I could Post the Parts list for the Grave Grabber, and get the ball rolling for our March gathering. I hope Patty doesn't mind.

We can work out the Date for the March build at our Feb Meeting. Although the parts list seems long, the actual quantities of individual items are very small. For example, for most of us, it won't make much sense to buy a full length of aluminum when you might only use 6". If we do this right we should be able to get the Grabber built for around $20. This assumes that we can get enough scrap wood for free and that you have a foam skull floating around.
================================================== ========
Here is the Updated Parts list. To save cost for everyone, I will "Group Buy" the Items in white. The cost for this stuff (aside from the Deer Motor @ $10) is around $10 ea.

Everything in Yellow YOU will need to bring to complete this build. Most of this stuff we have in our inventorys already

PLEASE SPEAK UP if you have any of the scrap wood below and would be willing to donate and share.

1 Piece of scrap 2” X 8 ” wood at least 12” long -Base

I'll buddy up with someone....I don't care who. Money is really, REALLY tight since I lost my babysitting job so the cheaper we can do this the better. And as you techy type guys know, I will really need to buddy up with someone during the build, since none of this stuff makes sense to me. My brain does not think in these terms. Looking at my book it looks like we're open most weekends if you want to start posting available dates so we can narrow it down.

OK, I couldn't find anything cheaper in the stores to replace the "Pivot arm" which was 65 cents (for 7"). So I tested out some 1/2" square (Steel) tubing that I have in my own stock. It works GREAT and it will only cost 30 cents. The pivot arm has to be metal tubing (or channel) so the Grabber arm won't sag to the ground.

I also switched out the Grabber arm to CPVC ONLY (No aluminum underneath). It works OK, but had some unexpected herkey jerkey movement (Side to side). I think it actually slides too easily??

Anyone that want's to build it that way is free to do so to save about $1. It will work fine, but I just didn't like the movement. I'm going to recommend usig the 1/2" aluminum bar underneath as it was originally built. It allowed for a LOT Smoother arm motion.

I Updated the parts list in the first post in this thread.

For those that haven't seen it, Here is the video of the tutorial that I made a few days ago. I sound rushed because YouTube would only let me post 15 minute videos. There are a few measurements missing that we'll cover later.

Hey all! I just wanted to say that I am really looking forward to the March make and take. It was so great meeting everyone tonight, I really felt welcomed to the group and I will definitely be back! Thanks for such a great time, good food and some awesome laughs! Can't wait to build the grave grabber with you guys! (should have called it a butt grabber!)

WOW what a great time for our first meeing in TOO MANY Months. I had a blast and it was great seeing everyone again.

The second batch of Deer motors has been ordered.

Just a reminder that everyone will need to buy a 3/16th X 3' long steel rod from Lowes or HD AND Bring a White Bic pen. Also, bring your foam skulls and perhaps some finishing items for your grabber like black spray paint and other paint for your grabber hand.

Karen said she'd bring Latex, and Jeff said he had a TON of berlap. If someone wants to add some "Neck" Just bring a small scrap of 2" foam. Cottenballs are cheap and I'm sure someone will volunteer to buy a bag for the group.

I will provide the rest of the linkage and hardware (Nuts, bolts, washers, and screws), including the small wooden pivot block.

Between Joe and I and others, we should have enough scrap 2X8 and 2X4 to build this thing. If anyone else has any 2X8 scrap, than let us know, so we can have enough wood (CAREFUL Sharon) for everyone. We'll need to confirm the amount of people taking part in the build and double check that we have enough.

TOOLS
We're going to need 3-4 Vise's and a few other power tools like Sawz-Alls, drills, and a few grinders with different wheels, and at least 2 miter saws, many extension chords and power strips etc. The more tables we have for this build the better. I'll post a more detailed tool list so we can gather some of the less common tools. I know that between us we'll have everything we need.

LASTLY, we need to set a date and a location (I assume it's Patty's again?). I'm free any weekend in March although the earlier in the month the better, since my busy season is FAST approaching.

I've emailed Kindys via their online contact form. However, there is no contact phone number (that I can find) on their website. Is Kindys a year 'round business?

We're considering this for a m-n-t this coming weekend. Any ideas on other suppliers of the deer motor that auto reverses in the same manner?

We're considering this for a m-n-t this coming weekend. Any ideas on other suppliers of the deer motor that auto reverses in the same manner?

I just ordered a second round of Deer motors from them for this build (yesterday). Yes they are a year round business.

If you order 9 or more the shipping is free, other than that you can just order them (unless I wiped them out) anytime. They have the Old model and the NEW model deer motors. I used the "old" model that comes with a crank arm for my build. The newer motor is easier to mount, but doesn't come with a crank.

I would HIGHLY recommend that you DO NOT build the Grabber using the auto reversing capabilities of the Deer Motor!!! I volunteered to do the prototyping of the original design and did extensive testing on these motors and thier longevity using this mode. Since we were going to build up to 20 of them, I wanted a LONG lasting prop that was still Cheap. The deer motors began to fail to autoreverse within 4-5 hours, AND there was a TON of unecessary wear on the gears and output shaft. The problems got worse and worse as I put more hours on them. In all, I got about 10 hours of run time before the auto reverse failed every 10 minutes. Take a look at my OAGG Tutorial video (http://hauntforum.com/showthread.php?t=25755). The "new" design now has over 90 hours of flawless operation. It DOES NOT use the Autoreverse and provides the EXACT same motion as the original

If you or your group have any questons, I would be VERY happy to assist you.

Sharon, If you made a head similar to your "Secret Santa" gift, it should be OK. You will probably want to cut the base (neck area) to a more reasonable length for this application. You can certainly leave some of the neck, Just shorten it to a reasonable size.

Just wanted to give you guys a heads up. www.woot.com is selling Philips Portable Speaker System 2- Pack for $12.99. I'm not sure if you ever check the Sponsor and Vendor section, but here is the link: http://www.hauntforum.com/showthread.php?t=25814
I'm not sure how these work, but the video looks like the sound is pretty clear and loud. Also it can run right off of your mp3 or ipod battery, so that will limit more power sources. Ok well check it out if you want! Maybe someone else from the group that had experience with these can give more information.

I got your back Irene. I'll make sure we have everything we need. You may want to get in the group buy for the deer motor and order 1 or 2 from Greg.

Everyone should double check the "List" in post #1 of this thread. KEEP CHECKING it as we get closer to the build JUST IN CASE I need to Update it again. Everything that listed in Yellow, I didn't buy and you will need to buy/bring it on build day. There are some substitutions you can make on that List Like:
================================================== ========
Hot Glue instead of tacks to attach your fabric

Small plastic tubing (rubber or vinyl) for your finger joints

Foam wig head instead of a foam skull

Old shirts or light coats to decorate your grabber
================================================== ========
I purchased enough materials (in white) to build about 15 grabbers.

The Deer motors should be here today or tomorrow. There should be 3-4 motors available for those who haven't already ordered one. I will bring them to the build. Between the motors, and the "Group buy parts, the total will be around $20, So bring a few extra $$$. The 3/16ths rod that you will need to buy cost $2.49 at Lowes or HD. I did buy a few extra 3/16th rod JUST IN CASE.

I'll get a tool list together soon because we will need a few extra power tools that I know a few of us have.

I can dig up some of that stuff too...I think I have pool noodles, washers, deck screws (not sure of the size) maybe some lock-nuts, burlap, I may have some aluminum stock.....I'll dig around on Friday to see what all I can come up with.

The list states "white bic pen"....if that is the bic biro pens I am pretty sure I have several of those from work but they are yellow. I don't think the color matters so I'll bring those too.

You want the tubing from a "White bic Pen" for the arm guides. Color doesn't matter of course. It looks like small pvc when you remove the ink cartridge. The Clear plastic pens have a brittle tube, and would probably break when you cut them and screw them down. One pen should make two grabbers since you only want two 1" pieces.

Sorry grim, I have plans saturday. As far as makeup goes. You can go to any local store like a walmart, target etc and pick up a packet of gelatin..its great for making dry cracked skin and wounds. Add some red food coloring to the gelatin for blood. Black eye liner can be smeared for dark circles under ur eyes. By some press on nails and score and chop up the ends then paint them with green black and brown coloring for some creepy nails.

It should work. Sharon asked me the same thing earlier. I wouldn't want to put a heavily latexed or monster mud wig-head on it. But Something like what sharon did with her Secret Santa gift should work. Hers didn't look that heavy to me. Good thing I overdesigned the skull support.

Despite my lazing about all the time, I am unavailable for the zombie crawl as I'll be making my pilgrimage to Delaware to visit my kids that day.

Without casting aspersions, since I know a bunch of you have done these in the past (Sharon, I know you have), but I'm not sure I get the point of one of these things anyway. However, if the point is to zombie-walk your way to a bar, well heck, I just might be up for that.

I don't need much inducement to drink a beer, and doing it in zombie costume would be a new experience, but what's up with doing it in the middle of winter? Wouldn't a month with a more mild temperature be better, you know so you didn't have to cover up your shredded clothes with a parka and snow boots?

Cheers,

OK, the family is gone and I can breath again (until I try to get temp. custody of the kids anyway). The only weekend we are busy is this coming weekend, so you guys pick a date, give me a day or two notice to make room for everyone and then show up. Simple! :p

So what date are we looking at for March?

Also - if you guys want to do another Make and Take overnighter at my house - start thinking of some dates and we can discuss further at our March meeting. I just want to plan early so we can pick a day that's best for everyone. I wouldn't be opposed to having it over Memorial Day weekend either if that's more convenient.

Memorial weekend is great for me!!! If anyone throws jello shots at me this year I'm shoving them up their you know whats, hahahaha

Oh, sure, way to derail the fun, FrightGuy. But I'd like to take a look at the book. I have all four (five?) volumes of Terror Syndicates prop building books so I'd like to take a look through the DC Props one. I was just listening to Brent Ross on Hauntcast last night discuss his new designs and they sound pretty good. I've been thinking about picking up his series so it will let me see if it's worth it.

I have an idea for a pneumatic prop I want to build this year and will need to build some kind of armature for it. Maybe the book will give me an idea.

I'll bring my books if you care to take a look through them. I have one TS video as well. Useful, in that it lets you visualize more of what's been said in the books, but I'm not sure it really breaks new ground.

Maybe we can start a haunted lending library here. If anyone has the Mitchell's "How To Haunt Your House" book (vols. 1, 2, or 3) I'd like to see it (them). They look sumptuous in their design (a real change from the TS books) and supposedly have some real good ideas in them as well as step-by-step instructions. I hear the second volume is more advanced than the first, but still a quality product.

Cheers,
Rich

A Lending library sounds good! Brent's books are great but they are geared towards those who aren't pneumaticaly challenged haha! I'm hoping I can learn some stuff like this in our group from you guys. I would love to see the TS Books and DVD, I have been meaning to buy one. I just ordered the Mitchell's prop book Vol. 2, there stuff is more my speed. I will bring both to the this months make and take and if you want to borrow the DC book your more than welcome to it.

At the risk of throwing a curve into the plans for the M&T, I found this grave grabber online. Rather than just one arm, it's a two-armer. It doesn't seem like it would be that much more difficult to build than the one arm.

http://www.fulcrumsites.com/haunt/html/the_grave_grabber.html

After I build the one-arm guy (I've got a good spot for him in my yard display), I may try and do the two-arm one.

Just a reminder to Mad and everyone else that will be building the March Project. REMEMBER to refer to the first post in this thread for the Items you will need to bring or buy. I already purchased EVERYTHING else for the build in order to save overall costs. The most important item that everyone needs to buy is that 3/16th" X 3' rod (non-threaded) from Lowes or HD. I just couldn't get enough of them from 1 store. It's $2.42

The second set of motors already arrived.

Methinks Sharon posted the video of the Christmas party to make us forget she's screwing up the meeting date plans.

But since I think most of us preferred Saturday anyway -- and only changed it to accommodate Sharon in the first place -- switching it back (to accommodate Sharon again) probably wouldn't be too much of a problem. But the corrupting influences are everywhere. It's easy to see how FrightGuy would get sucked in so quickly.

Hey, Greg, how long does this prop take to build (taking into account all those corrupting influences, of course)? Will this be one of our usual get the base built and then take it home to complete, or is it much simpler than that? Just trying to figure what essentials are needed since I'm still moving soooo slowly on my Halloween projects.

I love my paper mache so I'll be using that to make my head and arm, and still have to make both. I'm thinking the arm would be more important than the head if only to get the proper movement and alignment in place...assuming once again that consuming vast quantities of alcohol, ass grabbing, and other assorted sado-masochistic endeavors don't sidetrack us too much.

Rich

Rich, depending on your alcohol consumption, there is a good chance that most of us will have a completed prop by dinner with the possible exception of the hand and some skull details. If you are making your own hand or skull, make them as lightweight as possible. The mechanism isn't designed for a heavy skull and hand.

For those that want to make a hand, I suggest you be on time to start your hand first. With some luck it should be dry enough to install on your grabber by dinnertime. Good latex is "dry to the touch" within 4 hours or so depending on the weather.

I finally had some money to buy some good latex from Micheals art store. Since it rained today I had time to make a few hands. Here's the link which also has a few pics of the hand jig I made. Just use your own hand as a guide, and create some extra pins to make some larger hands. I used the same 3/8" rod that we'll be using for the grabber build to make the Jig. The pics should be self explanatory.

Since we have no fear of going off topic on these threads, I thought I'd give a shout out to FrightGuy for some innovative stuff he's doing on his blog, Grimlock Manor (http://grimlockmanor.blogspot.com/).

I've been following his blog since he crashed the last M&T and -- horrors! -- fit right in, and I think he's doing some innovative stuff over there. In addition to regular blogging, he's started doing some vlogging too -- video blogging -- and now he's taken to uploading some audio musings as well, which he calls "Fright Radio (http://grimlockmanor.blogspot.com/2011/03/fight-radio.html)." It's all entertaining stuff and shows that despite apparently having a real job he still has too much time on his hands.

What else can explain his willingness to out himself and volunteer to bring his latex Cat Woman suit to the next get-together?

But really, it is good writing, video, and audio. Just in case someone else might be interested in following along I figured I'd mention it since he's probably too modest to tout his own site. Too modest for that, but not too modest to play the submissive role for Irene. We are bringing video cameras to the next meeting right?

Nice work, FrightGuy. Just don't stand so close to me at the next meeting. :)

GC if you had to be in your birthday suit and it involved beer you would be there! I will also have to pass this Saturday on the Zombie Crawl. I just scored a toilet and a sink and have to find room for it, so I will be re-organizing my whole basement to make room. :) Now I have to think of some cool things to do with the toilet. I already have an idea for the sink.

Hey Sharon,

I was just reading back through this thread and noticed you had a toilet you were looking to do something with. You may have already seen this, but Terror Syndicate has a bathroom scene where they use a toilet:

http://terrorsyndicate.com/DarkWorks_2010_gallery.html

The photos dealing with the scene start at Pic No. 39 but you can get a better view at 40 where the puker is. Nice grimy scene. Don't know if you care to build your own puker but that would be cool.

Alternatively, you could roll a few six-packs of beer to me, I'll shotgun 'em, and provide a live demonstration for your guests. Either or.

Cheers,
Rich

Actually I haven't seen those pictures! That is definitely very cool! I've got ideas from other haunts and pictures on the net, but I want to see if I can change it up a bit. Most likely I will go that route because it looks really gross! Thanks for the heads up and of course I would love to use you for my haunt...Remember free beer if you did volunteer! FRIGHTGUY
03-14-2011, 10:25 PM
Yeah it looks long and tedious but if you can go ahead and make a ton of skulls for little to no money than that is great. Do those molds usually last long? I have never made one but want to this year. I am experimenting with Friendly Plastic right now, they are small plastic beads that you can melt in the microwave then shape and they dry hard and clear. I am sure there are some sex jokes in that whole paragraph haha! Anyways..the friendly plastic seems to be a pretty cool sculpting material.

GhoulishCop

NoahFentz,

"I can asure you waiting for latex to dry is boring...."

I noticed in the video a hair dryer/heat gun was used to speed up the process (as well as only 6 layers of latex/gauze instead of the recommended 8-10). IIRC, Vlad has previously said heat should not be used to speed up the drying process and when we had our play date the other day, I recall you saying it's a week-long process because of drying time.

Will that be a problem later on for Steve's mold? Only because I'm kinda impatient myself and want everything to be done yesterday.

Rich

NoahFentz
03-15-2011, 12:29 PM
Did you watch the whole video or scim thru it? The first attempt was an epic fail and he showed what it looked like. His second attempt was still too thin. When he pours the plaster in that mold it will sink and make a squashy skull with a flat head. It should be thick enough to support itself. He was peeling that mold off the skull like a banana (no comments)...it should "pop" out when the layers are pulled back...

Dont get me wrong....the video is quite entertaining and like all haunters its mostly trial and error until you get it the way you want it.

FRIGHTGUY
03-15-2011, 12:57 PM
So with a proper application and ample drying time how long do these molds last, can you only do so many casts with them until they are no good? I might give it a try soon.

GhoulishCop
03-15-2011, 03:11 PM
Since this has now become the mold-making thread (love the way this new guy FrightGuy keeps taking us off on tangents!), how expensive is this stuff? I thought I had heard around $8 for one of those 16 oz. Mold Builder latex containers, but AC Moore and Michael's were charging $15 and $16, respectively, for that size.

I know all of you old timers have done this mold making before at a meeting, but I'm thinking there might be enough interest to do another one at a future M&T (if you count two votes, FrightGuy and myself, as "enough interest").

Since the dry time on the latex is apparently glacial, maybe we could use a smidgen of time at the next meeting to start a mold project with the balance of the project finished at home afterwards.

Hey! Somewhere on this thread Greg was trying to nudge us to think about the April meeting before March was like 3 days old, so maybe this could be half the April project (or less) with another project chosen to fill in the balance of the day. And if I recall correctly, there had been talk of life castings and nailing straws in my nose and such...

If I also remember rightly, Irene suggested she was some sort of dominatrix.

Let's see....I made my molds in 2007. I just demoed a plaster skull for Ghoulishcop this past weekend....cant tell you how many hundreds of skulls I made in the past but the molds last for awhile....

We actually have done this project twice since I've been going to this group. Third times the charm....I think it might have been BoB C that had an interest in doing 2 part foam mold. It would be cool to get him to do a demo on that process...

...so our next meeting will be the entire month of April....right?

SHould we start a new thread on this subject? One thing im wondering is what other kinds of setups could you use in these molds for example, great stuff, silicone, friendly plastic? If u did one usimg friendly plastic you would get a cool looking cleat skull but I dont know if it would release the same.

Oh great, like you guys NEED an excuse to go off track! Anyway, I'm thinking that 20 haunters with open containers of latex ought to make the buzz of the jello shots obsolete! That's almost as good as everyone burning styrofoam in the house with the windows closed (yeah, I know, our group has never been known for having many functioning brain cells!)

The containers of latex at Michaels and AC Moore are around 15 bucks, but if you look in the Sunday newspapers, there are always 40% off coupons.

Oh, and BTW...I thought our project for April was mailboxes, or rather, Rich making us all mailboxes!!!!!

Looking for some clarification on the grave grabber motor before I start gutting my reindeer. You said the auto-reverse function of the reindeer motor ended up having problems after running for extended periods of time. So would that mean that the motors we got last year with the crank ghost build would be an acceptable alternative? Is there a need to have an auto reverse on this? What was the benefit of that anyway as opposed to just having it run in the same direction over and over? Thanks!

Rich

Rich, You can easily adapt a "Vent" motor for this design. They are strong enough (I think) to do the Job.

However, there are a few advantages to using the Reindeer motor.

The reindeer motor is:
- WAY quieter
- Fully weatherproof (Sealed in fact, the Vent motor is Not)
- A little stronger
- The mechanism is designed (dimensions) for the reindeer motor
- It will auto-reverse as a safty mechanism if there's a snag.

Feel free to bring a vent motor and we'll make the necessary adaptations. GO ahead and build a crank arm for it and we can adapt the rest.

As for your second question:

The original design had VERY Unique movement compared to a Tombstone peeper, or similar prop. This movement was created originally by using the auto-reversing capabilities of the deer motor. I just redesigned the movement by adding an extra crank arm to simulate the original movement while using 360 degree motor rotation. This created a bulletproof prop with many future years of heavy use.

Great to have another body lying around. Hackensack, huh? I live in Teaneck and NoahFentz lives in Maywood. We normally carpool in my two-seater pickup (truckpool?), and three might be a tight squeeze, but there have been discussions of tying Noah to the hood.

Regardless, look forward to meeting you soon.

I am looking forward to meeting you all! May be a little bit before I can, but I want to stick my nose in early, make sure I wont feel COMPLETELY like an outsider when I do go! :)

Well Not all are equally welcome. I'm only welcome if I bring my corps-O-Matic burger machine. We love Hand-burgers and finger dogs for dinner ;) Noah Carves the buns out of pink foam. They're a little crunchy, but tasty nontheless.

Hey Emu! How are you? I use to chat with you on the forum awhile back. Anyway welcome the NJ/PA/NY make and take. :) Oh and your driving can't be any worse than Rich because I heard he is a lunatic!
Looking forward to the meeting, but trying to figure out when I will find time to make the head and hands. If I don't make it in time for the meeting I can still add them after the project..right? Also Greg you said you have my parts that I just have to give you the 10 dollars for it? Remember I don't need the motor. Thanks!

Here's a partial tool list for everyone who has them to bring. There should be enough tools for everyone. I might update this before Friday so check back. I got a little busy with work in the last two weeks.

For Rich and Ken: Bring your Miter saw and Vises and a grinder with a cut off wheel. An extra sawzall would be helpful.

For Jeff and Karen: Bring your latex and your burlap

I will be bringing one Vise, One Miter saw, and a mini Drill press and a LOT of other tools.

For everyone else, bring:
Hammer
Power drill (if you have one)
Drill bits
Assorted driver bits for the drill
Wrenchs or adjustable wrench
Allen wrenches (If you have them)
Hot Glue gun and Glue sticks
Plyers (assorted)
Tape Measure
Marker or pencil
Sandpaper or file
scissors
Small socket set (Not metric)

Don't forget to check the parts list on the first page of this thread for items you should buy/bring this weekend (Which is apparently bluecember 36th 2013)

Yes I have (or will have) most of the other materials for this build as I specified in the first post in this thread. It was updated a few weeks ago if you haven't reviewed it in a few weeks. The most critical thing for everyone to buy is the 3/16th" X 3' long round rod (non threaded) from Lowes or Home depot. The cost for the other materials that I will be providing is $10 each. For those that haven't purchased a deer motor yet, they are also $10 ea.

Some of you want to try to build one using the "vent" motor. With a few changes in measurements, we can make it work.

Turns out that with all the stuff going on around here, I'm not going to be building this after all. I will, however, be working on projects for the party because I'll have inspiration. What better time to work on stuff for freaky people than when the freaky people are here!!!11

Only 2 days left till our gathering. The lack of activity and questions at this late hour is either very comforting or very disconcerting. We'll find out this Saturday.

Oh, and it's supposed to be a whopping 38 degrees on Saturday, so bring your bearskins.... Wait??? Did I say BARE YOUR SKIN??? Hmmmmm Polar Club here we come.

I'm really trying to make room to work inside...somewhere! However, if that doesn't work because my schedule is ridiculous right now, than we can put the carport cover up and fire up the firepit while working outside and come in to warm up. Checking in to a storage facility this weekend to start emptying the garage and then we can hang out in there next month when Rich is making us all mailboxes!!! Anyway, we always find a way to make it work and with a little luck the weather will be breaking SOON! I'm thinking we MAY be able to do most of the work inside and just the cutting and stuff outside! I'll be working on party stuff and not on this build, so all I need is a little corner of a table, or even the folding trays..lol.

Just a reminder to everyone who is building a grabber this weekend to get your Stuff.

3/16th X 3' round rod,
some scrap 2X4's and 2X8's.
foam skull
white bic pen (thin wall)
spray paint (Black or brown?)
Burlap (Noah, are you bringing the burlap??)
Hot Glue gun and Glue sticks
Various tools.

If your planning on making a hand for your grabber you will need:
Paint for your hand (black? Brown? White? Red?)
cotten balls
Latex (Black Cat is supposed to be bringing that I think)
Cheapo Paint brushes for latex and paint

I'll be providing everything else.

We are in need of work tables for this build. If anyone has a table or two BRING IT. I'll be bringing One to hold power tools and the Vise.

Rich, Are you bringing Your Miter saw too?? Grinder??

Ken, You're bringing an extension Chord and the other Vise?

I'll check in tomorrow to answer any last minute questions

I'm low on latex...I think I will be going to AC Moore on Friday to get a small container....I checked and some of my older jars are dried out. At one point in the future a latex run will be needed...

As far as I know, yes, it's around 10 AM. DRESS WARM...my day is SO crazy tomorrow that I don't know how much time I'll have to clear much of a work space. I'll do my best but the kitchen guys are coming tomorrow to measure for the cabinets and we have a wedding tomorrow night. I'll see what I can do, although it would be MUCH easier to get stuff done if Kenny went to work tomorrow and gave me some free time with noone here to "help"

Greg,

Yes, I'll be bringing an assortment of tools. Previously you mentioned a Sawz-All or two. I'll bring that as well. We helping Pattie remodel her house? What the heck are we building with a Sawz-All?! It was a pretty dainty looking prop in the video...

I have no idea what food item I will be bringing. It looks like it's ending up to be a "surprise" buffet. That should be fun.

We'll try to leave early enough to get there for 10am - but no promises. Irene can't make it this time. Their dog had 8 puppies and the mom is being fussy - so they need 24 hour care at this point and she can't get away.

Sorry guys, but I won't be able to join you tomorrow. I'm behind on lots of homework for my computer tech class because of program problems that I'm trying to fix and need to work on it through the weekend because it's due Tuesday.:(

I'm really disappointed because I wanted to see how the grabber goes together but since I think I have most of the supplies already, I'll check out the tutorials or comments on the forum to help. I'm definintely going to make it, it's just a matter of when. Luckily I have my handy nephew working on our house who has lots of cool tools and skill to help me if I get stuck. Please don't have too much fun without me (yeah, right) and good luck.

Looking forward to seeing some pictures and hearing some stories! Go Grabbers Go! I'll be back:eek:

Madmomma sorry you will not be able to make it! :(

Ok I just got back from Shoprite and I purchased a huge pepperoni pizza. So that is what I will be bringing to the Make and Take! If you don't like pepperoni than you can just peel it off and throw it at your nearest haunter! I'm sure Pattie wouldn't mind much if we started a food fight!

I have a lot of burlap I will also be bringing with me, some cheese cloth and creepy cloth. I wasn't able to get any mold maker latex but I do have a lot of cotton balls and coat hangers which I assume you could use the wire from to make the hands?

Looking forward to it..oh and my wife "Frightgirl" will be attending as well!

Morning all,

I'll be bringing my usual assortment of tools today, per Greg's request: miter saw, grinder, drill, Sawz-All, wrecking ball, etc. I think I remember Pattie saying she wanted her kitchen remodeled and a rear wall taken out.

I have a small, new container of latex adhesive I bought when I was looking for the modeling latex (I'm so very silly), so if anyone needs or wants it they can use it and/or have it. I've never been able to get into using latex for corpsing preferring instead to use my "pancake batter" recipe so I doubt I'll ever have need for it (of course, immediately after giving it away I'll find a use for it!).

Jay, I'll be bringing my collection of Terror Syndicate books as well (plus the video).

Also, if anyone's interested, a local Freecycler is offering several church pews. There are several sections at 4-ft. and one or two at 9-ft. They're made of oak and look to be in very good condition. They include the seat and back (connected) and separate center supports (they look like an L-shaped piece that would fit under the bench). The only part that's missing is the end piece, which could "easily" be built out of plywood or some hardwood if you were looking to incorporate a church scene into your haunt. They'd also be sweet as-is if you were simply looking for some built-in seating too.

He actually had a complete pew at his house as well, but he said that was his brother's who didn't want to part with it. I noticed a few other decorative pieces that also came from a church (not sure if he's parting with those as well), but they were easily 10-ft long. I could ask, if anyone's interested.

Anyway, the point being, if anyone is interested in the pews, I would pick them up for you and transport them to you another day. Only thing is, you would have to be sure you wanted them because I would not have room for storage. However, I do think Pattie has some space in her garage where they would fit nicely! :p

Last, I'll be picking up Jeff at around 9 or a little before so we'll be down around 10, depending on how fast I can get the chariot to drive. We've caught up with all the gossip between each other so I can return to my white-knuckle driving ways again.

Just suck it up Jeff. Sheesh....at least you can sleep until he gets there. I have people GETTING HERE around 8:30!!! Plus, as of now (8:29), I have absolutely no idea where everyone is going to work, as my house is completely turned upside down right now. Getting ready to scramble to make room. Kinda cold right now to be outside, but if all the cutting is done outside, I'm guessing assembly can be up here.

Wow....by 8:45 the house was cleaned back up, dishes were done, chairs were back downstairs and furniture was all put back in place. And I STILL got my down time since Kenny's not home yet. It was so nice seeing everyone again. Sorry it was so cold (not that I can control that) and also that I have no place yet for everyone to work inside. The garage will start being emptied into storage soon but it will take a little time. I'm praying the weather starts to break soon..lol.

Jay, please tell Carolyn how nice it was to meet her. I'm glad she joined you. I hope everyone had a safe trip back home. Can't wait to do it again..maybe I'll have made some progress on these stupid invitations so I can get some opinions.

Thank you so much Pattie and Kenny! It was definitely cold, but we were all able to complete our grave grabbers (some slowers than others). Thank you Greg for coming up with the parts and organizing the whole project. I didn't really get a chance to enjoy what I made at the time because I had one agenda and that was to get warm! When I got home I showed my daughter and was really happy with the results. It was very nice to meet Frightgirl. :) I hope we see her again at another meeting. Thank you for all the people who helped me work on my project and you know who you are! Last, but not least thank you so much for the most awesome compressor from Ken! I can't thank you enough!!!!

Very cool Jeff! That will be a project I will be working on this year. I know it will take some time, so hopefully I can finish it before Halloween. Also thank you Jeff and Rich for delivering the compressor. You guys are all awesome!

Hey everyone!

It was great seeing you all again yesterday! I am sitting here with Frighgirl (Carolynn) and she wanted to say thank you to everyone being so welcoming, she had a good time minus the cold weather. Thanks to Pattie & Kenny for being such great hosts again. Pattie I'm sorry your faith in me went down the drain but luckily there were no fires yesterday and you still have your house in one piece!

I had a great time doing the build and learned a lot from everyone! I just wanted to thank everyone for being so helpful and a big thanks to Greg for all the work he did putting this build together. It was great to go home with a fully working prop, Frightgirl and I are looking forward to making the hand for it and detailing it with fabric. It's going to look great in our cemetery!

I didn't get to take much (if any) video or pictures from yesterday so if anyone did I hope you post them on here or somewhere that we can take a peek. I would love to add a few to my blog if that is ok.

Looking forward to our next meeting which Rich is going to build us all completed Mailboxes! When is that meeting scheduled for? Some time in 2013? Plenty of time to build us all an awesome mail box Rich! lol!

Good times!

As you all know, I really taxed myself yesterday putting together the grave grabber prop. It is exhausting watching y'all work in the cold!

However, as much as I liked Greg's improved movement of the arm so that it didn't arc so much, there was still more of an arc than I would prefer. I want my hand to go straight out.

I did some searching today and while I found a couple of solutions, the one that I finally hit upon was simply lining up the deer motor with the PVC arm and using a small flat piece of metal bar to connect between the motor arm and the prop arm.

At the wrist end of the prop, I used two screw eyes. The prop seems to run fine and the arm moves straight out as I wanted. I'm just wondering is there a problem with this set-up, or is there a benefit to using Greg's multi-linked set-up? I'll post some pics and /or video I took of it in operation as soon as I figure out how to upload the video.

That motion sounds exactly like Joes Vertical Grave peeper that he brought to the first meeting that I ever attended. The motion you are seeking is a far more common than the motion that is created by the grave grabber we made yesterday. Personal preference is always the guideline for any of our own props. Had you asked about achieving that motion I would have sent you to Joe. The mechanism is far easier to build that what we did yesterday (in terms of geometry). My build admittedly was highly relient on geometry, BUT the geometry of the OAGG was what makes the movement unique and a cool thing to build.

On a Side note, I'm (selfishly) dissapointed that you didn't build one with a vent motor. I would have loved to have seen how it performed. I suspect it would have worked just fine. If I knew that the deer motors had flaws with the "Auto-reverse" I would have suggested using the vent motors. By that time I had already bought 10 of 'em for the group.

BTW, I had a Fantastic time yesterday. I was unaware that this was the first time that everyone who started, actually completed the basic prop. I'm elated to be part of this group and thier diversity of talents. Patty, As usual, THANK You for letting us invade your home and further irritate your neighbors who seemed totally undaunted by a 9' witch walking around your front lawn, and 15 people making constant noise for 8 hours. Sharon, Your Stalkaround was TOTALLY awesome!!!! Joe, thanks for handling the "neatening process" after our mayhem. The Food was AWESOME as usual.

Frightgirl, it was really nice to meet you, even though I was more than preoccupied.
It will be MUCH nicer once the weather get's warmer.

Sooooo, who's starting the next thread??? and what are we building??? I have a ton of suggestions, but it's someone elses turn to take the reigns. However, I'd love to demonstrate my hand making technique for the grabber. It's similar to other techniqes you done before with some subtle differences. It'd take about 2 hours from start to finish (less painting).
