You just made me think, 'I just threw one of those out! (...and isn't that the way!)' But it's actually still just outside. But you know, I think it's the motor that died...so that's rather pointless isn't it? :)

Electric motors are simple to hook up. You will have two post or some type of metal sticking out from the motor. Cut the cord off a old lamp (any thing) strip the wires (about one inch) and connect the wires to the motor (it doesn't matter which wire goes where). Make sure you tape it or hot glue the connection....so it wont shock you if you touch them. Then plug the cord into an electric outlet and the motor will run.
DC motors are just as simple....the only difference, you have a positive and negative post. So you need to hook the positive from your power supply to the positive on the motor and the negative to the negative. But even if you get the wires wrong almost all DC motors will run but it will turn backwards.
Touching both naked wire on a electric motor (when its hooked up to power) will get you shocked. DC powered motors wont shock you if you touch both wires.

so cut the vcr motor out, cut the plug off and rewire it directly to the motor?

That would be great and I could use a remote for the power to turn it on and off

Right. You could get a motion detector from wal-mart ($9.00) and plug the cord into the detector. Set it on test mode and when someone walks in front of the detector the motor will start. On test mode it will run for about 7 seconds then shut off.
Wiring a detector is about as simple as wiring the motor.
