New to me anyway.
I have been looking for an easy topcoat for mache.
that way I can just paint and then coat it.
I got some http://sculpturalarts.com/foamcoating.htm
and also http://sculpturalarts.com/clearcoats.htm
today. I have applied the flat plastic varnish to Eyegore (http://grimvisions.com/images/painting/painting%20018.jpg), and it even removed any shine he still had, its almost too flat. I waited for it to dry and then sprinkled him down with some water. It beaded and rolled off for the most part, leaving him very dry.
I am also in the process of making a mache cast of the boomer skull using sculpt or coat. I'll let ya know how that turns out.
The flat plastic varnish was 16 dollars for a quart. I used less than 1/8 of a cup on eyegore, im thinking it will be more cost effective than polyurethane

I never made anything out of mache (well paper towels and carpet latex glue) but if you want something to coat it with to seal it from moisture. I think a coat of cool seal would do the job.
Put the cool seal on let it dry and then do your finish painting. Cool seal is a white roofing sealer. It's sold at Wal-mart in the paint department. I think it's around $13.00 a gallon. It's goes on like paint but a lot thicker.
Come to think of it....has anyone ever tried putting carpet latex glue on their finished head....then paint it. The glue should soak into the paper and when it drys....it actually feels like skin. I know you can leave a prop made out of paper towels and carpet latex glue out in the rain (pouring soaking rain) and it will hold up great.
Here's the legs of a 8 1/2 foot giant I'm working on and you can see how the latex glue dries almost like skin. After one day in the sun...the legs went through about 2 inches of rain with no damage.

I have so much junk.......that I can't find things when I need it :)
I know my yard looks like a mess in that picture. Here's another section of my back yard I took last week.

But everything in those pictures are hidden from the neighbors sight (think God) behind this wall. BTW my garage is even worse...I actually have to find open spots to set my feet down when I try to walk through it. The sad thing about it, I dumped a whole truck load of stuff a few months ago. Then I bring more junk in....I think I need some professional help :)

Some other coating products that you could use are vanillacryl or Steve's Foam Coat http://www.fxsupply.com/materials/foamcoat.html
I also read good things about mixing things like sand or styrofoam beads into these products to add texture.

I was talking to the folks at the theatre supply store here, and they said they mix dirt, gold fleck, sand whatever in sculpt or coat and then use that. They showed me dirt mixed in the stuff and it looked like dirt but was very hard like plastic. Cool stuff. Thanks for the link
