View Full Version : Feb. 18th Make and Take
Greetings all. I was way behind with the Jan. thread so I thought I'd start one here early for Feb.. What dates are good for everyone? Projects??

Be sure you post WHERE it's going to be also. I don't need a houseful of haunters here if they come to show the house..lol

As far as I know I'm not babysitting on any Saturday in February, so I think it is clear for me. Just make sure if anyone who is reading this and wants to attend a meeting in January to make sure you check out the January thread for this month. Will Karen be able to have it at her house?
Pattie - I already did in the Jan. thread. We'll be expecting both you and Kenny to show since you're not allowed at your house when they're showing it either, lol.

Pattie,
"I don't need a houseful of haunters here if they come to show the house..."
Just think of the need amongst potential buyers that would create. They'd think they better get an offer in rightthisminute because of all the people that were coming to your house to look at it. They wouldn't want to miss out. It could turn into a bidding war!
Of course, they wouldn't know we were looking for any last minute props you hadn't yet thrown out, but it would all work in your favor. It's all good.
As for a day, right now I'm available any weekend. But things seem to be getting a lot more fluid these days. Kinda like my bowels, but maybe that's more information than anyone cared to know.

Hey Guys I know I have been AWOL for a while - but I would love to come and see you guys again to catch up and build something - so what are we going to be doing?
Hi Joe, we missed you too. Any suggestions for a prop? Id like to ask you to work up a quick demo also on bypassing battery boxes with walwarts.

I have been working with some leds and made an improved spot light with 1 1/2 pipe and 12 leds per spot and if we use 2" pipe we can use 18 to 21 leds per spot. Great for lighting up large areas or a group of stones or something. They are similar to these:
http://www.hauntforum.com/showthread.php?p=581993#post581993
I drilled the cap and fed the leds in from the back (Like we did with the bottle caps) and then placed the cap on the front of the pipe with a pipe coupler to hold in in and to also extend the pipe. On the other end of the pipe I have a end cap where the screw goes through. Works very well. I will try to get some pictures up tonight.
That sounds cool Joe, I'd like to see your pics and could definitely use some brighter spots. Also there is talk on beginning a pneumatic prop, I'm waiting for a link from Rich as to what he has in mind as far as motion goes. Joiseygal is interested in a coffin build so that's on for one months meeting as well. Are there any suggestions? For anyone not interested in those builds, we can always run a second project on the side at the same meetings. Joe, I'd still like to see how you can help us power the Boris off of a walwart, and also run through a quick basic with us on converting battery props in general to walwart powered. Anyone thinking of any other things???

Hey Ken,
This is along the lines of what I was looking for, though it would be upright and the spitter wouldn't be necessary. But just a "simple" prop where the skeleton suddenly lurches forward.
Corpse Erector w Spitter - Animated Halloween Prop - DCProps.com - YouTube
I would imagine it would just need a hinge at the bottom and a piston(?) somewhere above that to push it forward. Now if we could incorporate a spitter, that would be cool too!

Okay, now that I started looking, I just found one with a frame made from PVC instead of metal for those that might not want to get into welding (What?! Who wouldn't want to weld sh!t?!). It also gives a better view of the mechanism:

Sharon,
If you look behind the PVC version, it looks like they have a coffin sitting there made out of wood planks. I think that's the style I'm going to go for for my coffin creep prop I'll be building with the Hookerman group.
Rich
I've listed Feb. 18th as the date. Speak now or forever hold your peace.
That gives us time to start really narrowing down styles for the pop up frame, as well as deciding materials.
If anyone else is attending and I'll be contacting everyone, we're more than able to accommodate more than one build at the same time. I know there were a few people who still wanted to do the talking Boris, and any and all new comers are of course welcome.
I almost forgot. Do to popular request, this months theme for food will be barbecue. I'll have the grill ready on the back deck for anyone that's hard core enough to brave the temps, lol.
I'll start off the food list, I'll be making bacon shrimp wrap shishkabobs.
mmmmmmmmmm bacon.........................................
I'll also be doing some outdoor Dutch oven cooking for dessert. Scouting paid off.

Ken,
Is the square tubing you gave us last week usable for the welded frame of the skeleton erector we'll be building, or do we need something beefier? Could that stuff be used for a scissor hinge mechanism?
I think you referred to it as "hobbyist" material or something so I'm not sure if it's strong enough to build stuff out of.
Rich
I don't know if you were there when we tried welding it Rich. We were burning right thru it, but you may want to give it a try with the welder at a lower setting. I was indeed thinking of them more for bolt together scissor mechanisms. I think it's time we seriously hit up the web for links to which specific pop up/out we want to build, then work up the materials list from that. Each how to we find should have what gauge bar stock they were using. I don't want to reinvent the wheel.
Gory Corey
01-27-2012, 10:37 AM
It all depends on how thick the tube wall is.
It also makes a difference when butt welding vs parallel welding.
Different settings for different thicknesses and different alignments.
Smaller tubing has inherently thin wall and is a challenge to weld, but not impossible.
Pneumatic props should be constructed with nothing less than 3/4" tube stock.
1/2" is ok for frames, connectors and supports in smaller constructs.
1" is usually the smart way to go so you can have sufficient wall thickness and reinforcement for the pivots to ride along, if you do not use bearing.
Nothing worse than having too little perpendicular face to prevent the load from bending the armature.
Brian from Evilusions has a number of java calculators on his website to help design different frame designs.
Thanks Corey, I had always heard use the !" stock also.

"I think it's time we seriously hit up the web for links to which specific pop up/out we want to build, then work up the materials list from that."
I think you might have missed those videos I posted. :D I don't know they have a how-to associated with them though. I figured you were all-knowing and would be able to tell me what I need. Sheesh! WTH?!
Certainly the PVC versions can be figured out. But here's an even simpler (super simple) pop up version, though I'm guessing everyone would frown on using the screen door closer.
http://209.150.104.225/HalloweenTech/sklpop_PopupSkeleton.html
But here's one using PVC and a (real) piston that is actually very close to what I had in mind, though perhaps not so wobbly.
http://www.dreadnight.com/inyourfacescarec.html
Thanks for the advice on the tubes. Good info to know. I guess you want a pretty substantial frame so the piston doesn't have it really lunge forward at people.
Rich
I'm really not as worried about the explosion factor of using PVC for the pistons or the frames, as I am worried of the longevity of the whole thing. If I'm going to go to the expense of building it, I want it to last.

02-12-2012, 07:03 PM
Okay, so it wasn't too hard to find a how-to on the welded version. It's probably not exactly the same as what we're looking at, but it certainly clearly shows what it takes to complete one. I just wonder if it might be too expensive to build for many people.
http://www.teambac.com/web_hall/skelerector_how-to.html
He recommends using 14 ga. 1-1/4" square tubing (or 16 ga. 1" tubing) and I know at Home Depot and Lowe's that goes for around $10+ for a 3 ft or 4 ft length. We'd probably end up needing at least 4 or 5 lengths from what I can tell at a minimum, more (seemingly a lot more) if we were to build Bourno's version.
Maybe the PVC version would be better for the group? Anyone care to chime in?

Since this is my Forte' I thought I'd chime in.
Rich
Above is a List of places near you that call themselves metal suppliers. Keep in mind that most metal tubing comes in lengths between 12' and 24' long. Some places will cut them in half or quarter sizes so yoiu can transport them. Some might charge for that, and some won't. If you know your needed tubing lengths for your project, you might want to have them cut in sizes that won't waste material.
For example if the tubes come in 12' lengths and you need several 4' bars for your project, have them cut the the 12 footers into 4' and 8' sections for transportation. If you cut them into 6' sections you will have several usless 2' pieces once you cut them to your final size. If you happen to neet the 2' pieces than go for it. Just think about wha you need before you have them cut down.
DO NOT hang long (un cut) pieces of metal on your side mirror, you will probably loose it and your metal on the first pothole. One or two pieces might be ok, but I'd be careful about more than that.
Good luck and let's see some video ;)

Joe I sent you the address, but I'm not sure what is going on? I think Ken hurt himself on the job and having a Make and Take this Saturday might be too much. If he doesn't post tonight than I'm thinking about making other plans for Saturday. I'm not even sure what we are suppose to bring? Anyway keep an eye on the thread in the next few days to see what is going on for Saturday.
Hi all, I'm alive more or less. I had to call in sick again today, I'm still mostly a one armed bandit. As far as I'm concerned the make and take is still on. I was waiting for people to pick out what project they wanted to work on specifically. I can't decide for you on that. What materials you need, and their quantities I can help you with once you decide.
Since I'm not a pro welder, I've decided to go with this project. It's simple. Please note that most of the cost of the pneumatic projects is on the air supply side. The piston itself, air lines, air regulators etc. These parts however can be switched out and used on other props if you don't want to use the same pneumatic every year.
My personal plan was to begin assembling the basic frame for my project, then add on the air supply and trigger elements the next time, or even over the course of a few months depending on their costs.
Here's what I'm building this time......... http://www.frightprops.com/faq/index.php?action=artikel&cat=1&id=124&artlang=en
I will be making the skelerector after my welding skills are good enough lol. I'll post the cost on this one in a few hours.

And should we trust you with a welder after you apparently tried to break an arm or something?
However, I do like the multi-meet building of this prop. I like doing the frame this month and adding more as we go along. Excellent suggestion, as usual.

Huh? GhoulishCop posted the popup skeleton two weeks ago and we were waiting to hear if that was a good project to start on? It would of been great if we could of bought the material in bulk at a supply place to save money, but since it is last minute I guess we have no choice. Hey Sharon,
If you want to hold off on going to the Home Depot or Lowe's (good thing you're working tomorrow), I'll try to hit up some of the local suppliers Greg's map turned up. There seem to be a few in the Paterson/Clifton/Passaic area so if they have what we're looking for I'll make a run to them and pick up a bunch.
I did find one distributor that was in Wisconsin who seemed to have some pretty cheap prices, but then it would have to be shipped and I can't imagine that wouldn't cost one of Ken's arms.
Rich
My total cost for the bar and axle rod was $24.32. I do believe however that I have a ton of free bar stock this size at work and will post before 9:00 AM tomorrow if that's correct and up for grabs. Also the solenoids and air line I should have free as scrounged material also.
Ok, that figures, it's 1/2" bar stock here at work, so it's not heavy enough for this project. I may still bring some home, and do a very lightweight prototype of the skelerector. Scrap pieces of it will also be great for practicing your welding skills before you begin on your actual frame.
There's a welder, bench grinder, and drill press over at Karens.
Joiseygal
02-16-2012, 09:28 AM
Practicing is always good, especially since we end up doing the same thing on a project a couple of times because we goof up. :)
because we goof up
What's this "we" paleface?
The freebie pile is growing over at Karens by the way. does anyone need any 1 1/4",
1 1/2", or 2" plastic pipe. I have some scrap here at work that I can bring home in 7' to
8' lengths?
GhoulishCop
02-16-2012, 11:56 AM
Ken,
Where did you get your pipe from for $24 and change?
Rich
For the flipper prop I posted, I only needed to buy one 6' length of 3/4" bar stock, and I bought one 2 foot piece of 3/8" round bar for $24.32 at Lowes. The 6' length of bar stock does not include the back piece where the prop would attach, but I intend to use the 1/2" bar stock here at work for that. I'm sure I'll have extra of that for whoever needs it. I have plenty of 3/8 washers, no need to get those either.
As always, there's Wifi there, so bring your laptops if you wish. There will be one laptop on the work bench for general use, but it's a slower old one and mostly good for opening static web sites to look up info or look at porn.
Ok, Just checked with the fab shop manager, and all the 1/2" bar stock is mine. This would be a golden opportunity to play with the four bar software and make up a small scale skelerector as a learning bit. Has anyone worked with that software yet, if not we'll figure it out together?

02-16-2012, 12:43 PM
Ken,
I have a pneumatic cutoff tool that we could use to cut the tubing to size. Is there a compressor on site or should I bring my compressor along? Or is it unnecessary altogether?
And I can't even figure that LED calculator let alone the 4-bar software. I'll follow your lead there.

You can buy chopsaw blades for cutting metal just like in an angle grinder.
commonly available up to 14".
I likely will not make it guys.
I have been bed ridden since Sunday first with gout which is almost gone, but got a cold from the fidget and still having slight fever and feeling like carp overall.
Sorry but this means my 15" miter and 7" chop saw, and welding gear will not be there.
Also, wear cotton, canvas or wool long sleeves (buttoned way up too) and pants if you will do any welding.
This will protect you from most spatter and a sun burn from the welding arc.
Absolutely use welding shields /goggles to protect your eyes.
Without eye protection NEVER look at the welding arc, or you can fry your retinas.
I highly recommend you remember cutting oil when drilling and do not expect much from your drills bits.
Whenever you can, use a drill press.
Do not forget to step down the drill speed as you go to larger bits too much speed will overheat the bits and ruin them.
If you have step down drill bits they are very handy for drilling steel.
I also hope you have some steel sheet on hand for gussets.
If by some miracle I have a complete turn around I will try to come but, I am waaaay behind in show prep.
Have fun and be safe.

I'll bring my 10" sliding compound miter saw. When I make my Lowe's run today I'll pick up a metal cutting blade as well and we can make an awesome shower of sparks when we cut the metal. Kindling, anyone?
I have a drlll press I can also bring if you think we'll get that far. It's something of an oversized bench top model, heavy as all hell, but I'd be happy to lug it up there if it will be needed.

Huh??? Where did that come from Pattie, lol. No one said anything about the food at your place not being great. It's bar b q in the winter, and that means especially yummy. Come on up and join us!
Cory, I hope you feel better. Not to worry, we have welding coats and pants and gloves etc.. Yes the drill press will be there as well.
Cool Rich, I love having your combo chop saw fogger handy lol, and it'll save me the trip tonight to pick up a metal cutting blade for mine. No need for the drill press, I've already said like three times mine is there, lol. I did pick up a 6 x 10 welding blanket so that should pretty much catch most of the indoor sparks we'll be throwing. You don't even need to bring your air compressor as Karen has hers there.
I talked to Karen and she said Noon is the start time.

"No need for the drill press, I've already said like three times mine is there, lol."
Kinda like the amount of times I posted what project I wanted to work on. :)
I also have all the accoutrements for the welder (no blanket though so we can snuggle under yours). 12 noon sounds good. See you at 9 a.m.! Should I bring my drill press?
Rich
lol, Yes bring your drill press, lol. Oh damn, the one thing I didn't check is how much wire is left in my welder, I'll check tonight. I'm really looking forward to this project.
Last call if anyone wants me to bring that plastic pipe, speak up now or I won't take the time after work to cut it into van size pieces for transport.

Ken plastic pipe always comes in handy, but take it easy and just rest after work. We need you in good shape for our lesson on Saturday. I am also really looking forward to this project. Hey Pattie are you coming? It would be great to see you and Kenny!
Rich, if you could bring your welding helmet that would be great, and also any clamps you have.

Also I finally posted the Boris Hack Hightlight video on my Youtube channel. If you get a chance check it out it is towards the end, so you can just jump to that part if you want. Actually I will put the link on last months thread. If anyone can give me the link to the Boris Hack than I would really appreciate it because I have a lot of people asking about it. I checked on the forum, but couldn't find it?

Unfortunately Johnny's link is no longer available, but if I could remember the website Karen gave me to check out old links than maybe I can recover it? I noticed that it looks like the same hack we did by checking out the other forum members post. Thanks Roxy!
That's a dead end Roxy. You have to use the internet way back machine to view the page, and even then there are no pics. I was lucky I had printed them out years ago.

I think Otaku also did a hack. You might want to check with him.
Yes he did but it wasn't the one we used.

This weekend is no good for us. We have to go meet with a friend of Kenny's for dinner (and get his money for the retirement dinner before he spends it..:p)
Plus, Kenny's aunt died the other day, so before we go out to dinner we told his cousin that we would be available to help her do some of the stuff that has to be done. Maybe next month...I miss you guys!

Rich I sent you a text, but just in case you didn't get it than could you please bring your welder. Ken requested it just in case. Thanks! See you all there! :) PS...Sorry about Kenny's Aunt Pattie. I really hope we can see you soon!

Because all the good stuff/bargains at the flea market are gone by noon?
Hopefully I will be able to make the next meeting (still recovering from foot surgery... the surgery was easy the wound healing is slow)
I'm enjoying the videos of the make and takes, they are the next best thing to being there, except without the good food :)

YAY...another great Make and Take. Thank you Karen for letting us invade your house and putting up with us. Ken thank you so much for your knowledge, goodies and hospitality. It was so nice to see Deb, Carl, Courtney and Joe. It has been way too long and I hope we see you guys more often. The food was excellent as always! I had fun welding even though I had to do the same piece six times. The pneumatic prop is so much fun to work on and although it will take some time it will be definitely worth it. Also Tinman I'm glad you are on your way to recovering and hope to see you soon.

"It was so nice to see Deb, Carl, Courtney and Joe"
Obviously meaning it was NOT nice to see me. Hmph! Hell, Tinman wasn't even at the meeting and he gets a mention!

Thanks Karen! Great food as always -- except for the blue cole slaw (who would get something like that?!?) -- and Joe, the chicken was so good. Definitely had the right man in charge of the grill.
It was good to see Carl, Deb, and Courtney, and Tinman I wish you well as well. :p
Ken, thanks for your help as always, but you should have told me I didn't need to bring my drill press. Looking forward to seeing this build come together.

Rich of course it is always nice to see you! Maybe one day we can see if Ken can instruct us on the pneumatic prop prior to a regular schedule make and take. Since he mentioned it and this project will take awhile I figure that was a good idea he had. Maybe we can all work it out on a day we all could be free?
Tinman, Glad to hear the surgery went well. Get well soon, we miss you.
Ahhh Rich, I was glad to see you.
Pattie you and Kenny are missed too. stop your excusing and get here, lol.
Yay to Carl, Deb and Courtney for making an appearance, and I hope you do get moved back into your home today.
Thanks Karen for letting us invade your home, not many people could stand by calmly as showers of sparks fly in every direction INDOORS lol.
Joe, It was great seeing you again, my head is still swimming in ideas for the triggers for the props, and those LED spots you developed are to die for, I can't wait to make some.
Sharon ran out of beer and brought blue food.
lol, All in all a very good meeting, and lots of practice and experience gained. We're on the way to our first pneumatic. Thanks to all for the awesome food, and especially you Karen for cooking my dish as I couldn't escape from the prop work. Hey I've got a great idea, let's do it again next month !!!
