View Full Version : Movement doesn't have to be hard....stand up zombie

Getting a prop to move doesn't have to be hard or expensive. Here's one of my new zombies.
I have maybe $11.00 and a couple hours of work on this one. $6.50 for the head $2 for the motor and $2.50 worth of PVC and chicken wire.
This prop was built to be a wall hugger. I left it running all day (8 hours) and so far it's holding up

If anyone else sees this in their yard, my brother in law is missing!
Seriously MM, that is so cool. I know you throw these things together and think little of it but to me, it looks difficult. Any detailed "how to" on something like this? type of motor, power source, etc...
Not that I'm going to tackle it anytime soon, but it would be a great prop for someone starting out in motion props, particularly if it is so simple to construct.
In a dimly lit corner, that would be very unsettling!

Basically it's just a chicken wire and PVC body and one of my massager (I have 7 left to built with). One leg has a shoe on it and the other just slips over the knob on the motor. And a spring/bungee helps keep it steady. Can't get much simpler than that :)
A wiper motor or any motor with an offset post or cam could be used instead of a massager.

This was just a test spring and bungee I fixed up so I can change the length to get different types of movement during testing.

I'm scrapping my flying crank mechanism to build this today. This is a beautiful idea. Very original. So original in fact, that I'm totally stealing the idea. Mine will be built by the end of the day.

This one is made just about the same way. If you can get one of the massager you can do both with the one massager. It has 2 moving post on it.

This massager is a little different its a foot massager and I'm planning on making this prop.

Here's a test I did to see if I could get the right movement ...the head is just a test dummy.

I also picked up another different type of massager today at the thrift store...$2.00. It has positions that go up and down about 1 inch. I ran a test on it today and it's going to be great for a electrocution prop.

Built frames for the stand up as well as the 'ground breaker'. I used 1/2" sch40 pvc. Total building time for BOTH frames: 23 minutes. The genius in design is that is sooo simple. I love it. I haven't dressed the frames out yet, but you guys got to try this.

Alright help me out here I'm not really getting how the movement is working.
madmax

The movement is simple....one leg just slips over the turning post on the motor and the other foot is planted firmly on the ground (holding the weight of the prop). The post turns and moves the leg, the PVC slips on the turning post as it turns and that gives it the jerky zombie motion. The spring or bungee on the back, connected to the wall helps keep the zombie stable and standing.

Could you imagine a whole graveyard full of those things? AWESOME!

Here's a pic of the frames, dressing them now. I left off a leg of the big one, I want to see if a wiper motor, which is what I will be powering these with, will be strong enough to hold the entire prop up. I know the wiper motor will be able to support the ground breaker without any assistance.
By the way, this pic is made possible by wife's new $70 camera. Not quite the quality we had before.

So many great ideas. Which to do first is the question? :)
We need to find a source for cheap massagers and do a group buy.

A cheap source for massagers is Garage Sales, Rummage Sales, and Thrift Stores.
As a matter of fact, I bought a foot massager 2 weeks ago at a Church Rummage Sale for $3.

this could be achieved with a wiper motor or just about any motor with an angled shaft attached.

That is an awesome prop - truly creepy movement!
Even if I could figure it out, (and I'm going to try) I never seem to find stuff like motors or anything really good at my local thrift shops. I guess I'm going to have to start looking around for more to check out... :D

Now... just imagine rigging up a bouncey skeleton like the one in Terra's video (http://www.hauntforum.com/showthread.php?t=15621) up to a motor to do that movement (just a bit more subtle to not get him boinging and boogalooing about heheh... unless of course you got some good tunes jamming at the time)...
Hmm... what kind of spring for the joints would be cheapest yet effective...

Very cool, nicely done - another great use for a massager motor - these are becoming as versatile as the wiper motors - might have to do a make and take using these motors.

I'll be looking for these in the thrift stores. Anybody know about how much they weigh? Do they require some kind of anchoring to keep them from dancing around the cemetery?
Later - found one for $6 at the thrift store. I already have the PIR and timer for triggering this thing. Can't wait to get started on this prop!

I too like the effect, just make sure they are anchored well..I'd hate to see a ToTer get hurt from a flinging prop fresh off the bungee cord.

This is the one I am planning to do.I have the massager coming 20 free ship from ebay.I have a shirt and jacket from second hand store just need to get some pants.I liked this prop because I can do this on my own unlike my other motor props I had to have hubby help this one looks simple.

Got my massager today.Picked up some pants at good will and already dirted them up.I was going to order a mask but I have a thru the window crashing prop that looks good with hands. It is hollow but I am going to put pvc with spray foam to make it a full head to mount and the same with the hands.

Made lots of progress filled the mask and inserted pvc into great stuff done the same to the hands.Built his frame dressed him, jumped up and down because I built the frame and got the parts all by myself(and saw a mouse also screamed at this point)).Now I will undress him and stuff him with bubble wrap and glue the pvc. Then will complete him by putting him on the motor to test him.
I have got so much done this week since we are finally having nice weather.

MadMax has started posting again on Halloween Forum, and it looks like he has at least checked-in here. Maybe you can send a PM to him.
His old posts on HalloweenForum have a link to his photobucket account.
Good luck. His props are pretty sweet.

This standing zombie is not in that thread. Its built differently and has the shiatsu lower.

Build you a frame out of pvc and chicken wire. One leg sits on a piece of rebar drove in the ground. The other just sits on the massager. The flimsier it is the more movement you will have. That is how I control the movement on mine. If I want it slower I make the frame tighter by screwing it to gather and sometimes adding wood. If I want it faster, I might build each side separately and hold them together with duct tape.
