Here's a short video of a new half woman, half octopus we just finished up.

Did you run this with a crank overhead? I'm with Scarefx, creepy.

No the mechanism is all internal. One small gear motor operates all eight tentacles.

I will post some pictures soon of the latest endeavor for the tentacles. I am working on some giant ones that will end up about 12’ long. These will start out at 6” in diameter at the top, and reduce down to 1” at the lowest point. Octavia’s lower tentacles start at 2 ½” at the top and reduce to ¼” at the lowest point just about four feet long. Her arms are about three foot long. The thought is to possibly drape three of these monstrous sized versions, which would be animated, along with two or three static ones from the roof of our building which is two story, and periodically make them twist and flail. However, our haunt is located on the corner of a very busy street downtown, and the fear is that they may cause some traffic accidents. Not that that wouldn’t be a great attention getter, but I really don’t want to get sued over a display.
The tentacles do operate from a simple crank mechanism, and depending on how you set it up, they can move in a full 360 degree motion. They could just as easily be used for whipping tails, stalactites (which is how the idea formed), vines, snakes, or just about any kind of long dangling feature you might want to animate. Octavia (who I originally wanted to name Octopussy, but got slapped…..er….talked out of) was the idea that won out in our first attempt in using them in a prop. My next thought is to combine the slow and creepy movement with a nice little ‘in your face’ startle. He will be a sweet little dragon……at least that’s what I’m thinking for now.

Here are a few still shots of the tentacle. The graduated discs are 1/4" Delrin. They reduce in size from 2-1/2" down to 1". The center spline is simply 1/4" air line, and the three guide lines are tarred crab line. The spacing of the discs is about 1-1/4".
