Yes. Anything goes on this one. Just be sensible on how you price the items that go into your creation.

I'm going to have to say "no" to that one. Even a totaled care has some value, and I'd definitely say that it's more than $20. When I say "Be sensible" this is the kind of thing I'm talking about.

You know, this contest has been run last year, and I encourage everyone to not just read the rules, but the discussion from last year as well. the link is:

is using items found in a trash bin ok?
Yes. Trash is ok to use. Just be sensible in what you consider to be trash. Don't go throwing expensive items away just so you can say it is "trash." If you think that the item you are using in your prop may not be considered to be following the guidelines, consult me via PM before building and I'll let you know if it's ok or not.
Oh! I almost forgot! What about sharing progress? I know this was an issue last year.
Yes, share. I run this place and have thought the sharing process just helps step things up a notch and adds to the competitive edge. I won't be brow-beaten into changing the rules this time around, that's why I didn't open up the rules for discussion this time around.

Ok question: Is the total cost in US funds or Canadian funds... I have a project in mind but if I use Canadian funds, Im WAY over, but If I convert it to what you guys would pay in the US, then I should come in on target.....
How can we work this?
Thanks,
Big Howlin
01-23-2007, 01:42 PM
I was gonna ask that too.
On http://www.xe.com/ucc/ it shows at the moment:
20.00 USD
United States Dollars = 23.6311 CAD
Canada Dollars
Beepem
01-23-2007, 02:00 PM
seeing as Zombie lives in the US i would assume its in US dollars

I know its in US, but when we have to calculate what we spent, we need to convert it somehow. Or He can just let us do $23-24 CDN as our prices are more expensive. Works out to the same in US dollars. :D

Hellrazor
01-23-2007, 04:24 PM
I think that 23-24 is lowballing it for us. You have to also take into consideration the cost of what the Item would be in the US
Eg: bucky Skull - 15.00 canadian plus 14 % sales tax
6.99 US plus sales tax of less than 14%
What should we do oh Great Zombie????
I think 30.00 is more like it, but its your contest....
Big Howlin
01-23-2007, 04:36 PM
I already have a great idea, I think I could do it for under 25.
I dont think I would go over...but its gonna be a little ghetto. Ill do my best though. Do we have a place where we can post our pics and updates yet?

Yes, the cost is in USD.
Progress photos are to be posted inside this thread.
The FINAL product you produce should be presented by posting a new thread in this forum. It will NOT appear to anyone until I have approved it for use in the contest, so please do not post your entry more than once. If there is a problem with your entry, I will contact you about it.

THERE IS NO THEME. It's a free-for-all. Just make whatever you can for $20.
AND FOR YOU CANADIANS...
Go to an exchange web site and look up what $20 USD converts to for Canadian money. That's what you have to work with.
Just to make this easy, $20 USD = $23.62 CAD. So for you Canadians out there, you have $23.62 CAD to work with.
Anyone else out there should convert our dollars to their currency to figure out what they have to work with as well.

Well, since you're disassembling an existing item you already paid for to use it for a prop, I think a small dollar value would be in order. How much did the table fountain cost when it was new?

Sure, to save a buck you can have it be man operated.

Ok, so we'll say your used pump is worth $2. That sounds fair. It is something you bought... it's not like you picked it out of the trash.
And I'd like to set a precedent here. If it's something you previously bought and you will now be disassembling it for the purpose of stripping a part out of it for this prop, a dollar value will be associated with the item.

Electronic systems are allowed, but every item necessary to the operation of the prop is included in the cost... regardless of whether "everyone" has it or not. To assume every person has a PC as an incorrect assumption. There are definitely people out there that do not own a PC. This falls in the category of items that are "within reason," which a PC is definitely not within reason.
I believe it was Otaku that submitted a nifty motion sensor for his entry last year.

Well, after looking at your original post, I see the humor. Maybe if it had followed with a LOL or something like this :D, I would have picked up on it sooner.
Zombie-F OK I got one question. I can get enough throw away wood from work to add on to my house by the end of the week.( if building codes weren't so stiff LOL ) How much of this could I use in the prop to make it fare to everyone? I have a small operation table I made last year and wasn't able to finish it. Was wondering if I could include it as part of the prop. The only cost I have in it is the screws holding it together. If it gives me an unfare advantage I'll do something ells.

I disagree, and to prove my point, if anyone hasn't got a computer, can they please reply to this post.
Well, at my last job I worked with a guy that didn't own a computer but was able to use the one at work to do his online stuff.

I want freshly built items for the contest. No finishing this prop or that prop that wasn't completed from last year.
As for the wood issue, how big are the scraps we're talking about and how large is the item you plan on building. I will set a limit on stuff like that because it is a little unfair to people who lack the access to these materials you can get.

Well, at my last job I worked with a guy that didn't own a computer but was able to use the one at work to do his online stuff.
My point still stands anyone who has the slightest interest in an automated prop will have a computer.
Are you banning stuff that uses mains electricity because the cost of an electrical generating grid isn't within the $20 budget, or that not everyone has electricity, after all there could be someone in the middle of Africa reading this forum!
Computers today are as much a utility as electricity, gas or water.
I know I've already lost this argument, but your point that not everyone has a computer on an internet forum is a little contradictory.

What are you a wise guy? I have TWO haunt neighbors who have self automated props who DON'T own computers, yet thier interest in automated props remains...Hmmmm.. and I have 4 automated props that don't use computers, even though I own 5 of them. I happen to know a guy who doesnt own a computer but uses one at a library to go online. I'm sure he's laughing at your post right now.

Phoenix,
I'm interested in your prop idea. Just don't submit it to the $20 prop challenge.
This is just a friendly forum where everyone gets to share their ideas. From what I can see Zombie-F is just trying to keep the contest fair for everyone. This is supposed to be fun! I personally used one of the ideas from last years contest and appreciated the fact that I could buy all the supplies and build the prop for under $20.
Share your idea. Think about the bragging rights!

It was for a home made IO board for a haunt controller and a new version of my haunt control software, I reckon given that just about everyone has a PC then the $10 component cost of a board would fit the bill, and would remove the need for using the $50 IP boards the system currently uses
Id have to write a completely new version of my software, but hey thats just my time.

The lumber is wet pine and usualy runs in these lengths,
1x6 from 5 to 7 ft long
2x6 from 3 to 7 ft long
2x10 to 2x16 from 3 to 7 ft long
Broken down from large crates. The wood would have to be dried to stay streight. ( or in my case left in my shed for a few years LOL ). I sware it twists and warps as you cut it. LOL
The table size would be 2.5x5x3ft tall. There would also be an extending arm to hold part of the prop. Be no problum to rebuild. I could even take a shot of both tables side by side to prove I'm not cheating.
If this is OK I'll start on it. If not that's cool to. I'll build something ells.
Thanks.

(if thats what you are planning)
Ya'll gota stop!!! this aint fair! It's WAY to cold to do anything here in MO. Paper mache is freezing in place. And that's happening in my basement LOL. I'll use the table and partially done machines for it's intended prop and do something ells for this.
Parts list.
50 gal. foil lined cardboard barrel ( free from work )
a few pieces of 2 1/2 inch ribbed tubing ( free from work. I actually have about 12 yards of this stuff. Factory got rid of an old air table. )
Assorted cardboard boxes, cans, tubes and containers (free from my eating and bathroom habits )
larger cardboard tubes ( free from work )
Soda pop caps ( free from my drinking habits )
Computer graphics
Faked wire ( newspaper wrapped around florist wire )
Clear plastic scraps from bakery goods containers and soda bottles ( used for broken glass and gauge covers ) free.
Not sure but might use Great stuff is snot ragging doesn't do the trick. Might use Great stuff even if snot ragging works LOL.
Latex and Kilts paint colored by cheap craft paints. ( not free. Will have to figure price after project is done.)
C7 or C9 Christmas lights. ( after Christmas sales )
Battery opp mini Christmas lights ( .75 after Christmas sale )May add wire to this to extend the reach of each light.
LOTs of newspaper.
Lots of mache goop
And more things may be added to this as it progresses.
No pictures yet. Still looks like the bottom of the trash bag I got it all from. LOL

If it's in the trash and you go digging for it and put in the work to salvage stuff out of junk, it's considered free. Now if you were using the whole washing machine, that'd be a different story.
I work in a furniture warehouse, and have ready access to all kinds of packing materials that are considered trash when removed from the furniture. This includes plastic bags, styrofoam blocks, sheets of fabric, lengths of pool noodle-type foam, etc,etc,etc.....if I were to attempt to purchase similar items, there's no way I could build a prop to compete in this challenge...( for instance, a large piece of burlap for a MM prop = one piece of sofa packing fabric)...however, trash-digging these supplies fuels my hobby on a regular basis....Also, these items are given out regularly to the general public, free for the asking......sorry if my question has already been addressed, but.....

If it's given away or salvaged from the garbage or a dump, you can consider it free being that this is within the bounds of reason.
I'm hoping the cost of molds and armatures aren't included in the total price. I use Bucky skulls to forum my paper mache skulls over.
Since a mold is considered a tool, it will not be counted as part of the cost. The materials that go into the casting you make from the mold are added to the cost.
When you say "armature" what do you mean? If you're referring to a moving part in an electromagnetic device (like a relay or electromagnet) then yes, it is counted in the cost of your prop.
I, too would like to know about using greatstuff/foam skulls and how the cost of making the mold figures into this.....I just might have something to throw into this challenge, depending on the answer.....
See the above answer.

LMAO Doc! Thats got to be the most memorable prop photo I have ever seen.
LMAO Dr. Morbius. Way to funny dude.
I'll pro rate the foil into the cost of the prop. The only thing left on the Bucky skull is the cut marks. But it's worth it. I can make hundreds of corpses and only need one Bucky skull.

You know, I used the exact same technique on the Papermache' skull on my prop, and the amount of foil used is SO negligable, I couldn't begin to calculate the cost of it. It HAS to be maybe 2 cents, if that.

I actually HAD to let her dry like that, or the paper towels would just keep falling off.

Is it a tree of some kind?
Totally cool look Dr. Morbius. That would explain the hole left in the back.
Great looking bubbly eyes Lilly. Can't wait to see the rest of the prop.
Cheetahclub67, Tree? Many armed thing? Spider with a few legs missing. What ever it is it looks cool so far. Paper mache or foam?

hey All,
I see you guys have gotten a head start on me as usual. My $20 prop is still in its planning stages. I have a question for the group or for ZF in particular:
A neighbor of mine is a teacher at a local school, she came across a bag of six mannequin heads that were getting thrown away. They were used to teach the Votech kids hair cutting and are now completely shaved. I was thinking of using one in my $20 prop, can I say it costs $1 even though it was really free? Any objections? Thanks for your input. Can't wait to see all of your props!

Hey Kevin....those barber heads are really creepy! My wife had one when she was in school, and her car got stolen....we recovered the car, and the only thing missing was the head......
Can't wait to see what you're gonna do with it!

I got an entire box of those heads from a beauty supply place..they are great! I also got about 20 packages of hair extenions and about 6-8 of the styro heads that have no faces. They just have those cheesy plastic faces over the opening. I use them for EVERYTHING! It's great getting stuff for free isn't it?

I have a question..
Can I use a Halloween costume I got at the Goodwill for my daughter for 5 bucks, but she out grew it? I would have tossed it out, which would make it trash, but the thing is real nice, it must have cost around 50 bucks new. My guess is I can, but the term "fair market value" keeps coming to mind. I need a ruling.

As was the ruling for previous items of this sort (I was going to throw away BUT...), there will be a fair market value associated with it. Since you only paid $5 for it, we'll go with a value of $2.50 for it.
Now, if you had picked it out someone's trash for free, then I'd say it was free.
