Just wondering if there is any interest in possibly forming a Southwest Ohio Haunters group? I am from Indianapolis, but I have a space available in Wilmington, Oh (n of cinicinatti on I74) that would be perfect for make-n-take gatherings.
So....any takers???????

I think a good place to get this thing going would be a meeting at IronStock.
Just meet there and work out the details!

How's everyone feel about the 19th? The 12th is Mother's day weekend, and while I personaly have no problem with building dead things when I should be honoring motherhood, it sounded like Turtle does.....
so, anybody want to meet on the 19th?

It was kind of funny, Doc.....I have this....umm..."reputation" at the bookstore we were building at......several people poked their heads in throughout the day and said "is DAVE giving classes now?!? I didn't know that....where do I sign up?!?" I think this could get out of control real quick.....

Geesh you early bird... lol jk I'm ok with the 19th and at 9am... Now if I can get my mom to come here and tell ya what she thinks lol.. I'll have to call her.... That was funny watching people come in and out with amazement... And all the questions... Good Times Good Times!!
Ok so what we making now... You know my brother, Bry, wants to build mud monsters  I have no clue what we can make next so I'm up for any ideas.... Can't wait!!
dave the dead
04-16-2007, 06:23 PM
9:00 am is fine with me too.
As for the monster mud, we can do it, but theres definitely some logistics to think about.....we could build framework one meeting, apply mud the next, and maybe finish up on the third. And then, you'd have to figure out how to get them home.
Or.....we could do a "community project" that would stay at the bookstore, and that way everyone could see the method and make their own at home. (just throwing out ideas)
I'll try to come up with some one-day projects, and in the meantime, everyone else think of what you would like to make!

Today was one of the all time best days ive had in a LOOONG time, thanks to dave the dead. I wasnt able to make the MNT a last weekend and Dave being the awesome guy he is said he would meet me at his house this weekend. Where do i start? I learned soo many cool things today its unreal. I got the oportuntity to learn start making a skull mold so that i can make skulls in the future. I learned how to make a skull stack light which is freaking awesome!!! I got to make the kick a** pop up prop which im going to make be a screamer. OMG sooo much. He showed me about 2 part apoxy and how to make it work and the best things to use for foam heads. How to make a mother mold....OH and my personal favorite the best eyes EVER!!! Those eyes were worth the entire 4 hour round trip. Hell on top of all that his wife even fed me lunch, which was great. Dave sure does know his stuff. He was super patient with me and all my questions and interuptions. He showed me about all kinds of things and made things ALOT more simple for me. I brought all my stuff home and got to show my kids what i made, it was a really great feeling to have my 13 year old say "WOW, mom thats cool...you made that??" He isnt easily impressed with the whole halloween thing. Sooo for those of you out there that live in the Indiana, Kentucky, SW Ohio area...please try and come to the next make and take I promise you wont be sorry. Thanks again DAVE you and your wife were wonderful and i really appreciate you taking time out of your weekend to help me learn things.

It sounds like it's decided then.....we will be making Flying Crank Ghosts on May 19th! I will put together a materials list tonight and let you all know what to go shop for. There is also a little bit of prep work that can be done ahead of time to make the actual build go quicker.....I'll just let you know what the homework is, class!:D
sounds like we will have a couple ghosts, a skeleton, and maybe a pirate being made....sound like fun!

I'm in Dayton (Kettering to be exact). But my yard haunt has been up North. It's neat to see there's people around here who do this. Practically-speaking there's no way I'd get up that early to drive. I don't have storage room for anymore props. I built too many last year.
However I did enjoy seeing your photos and video on photobucket in this thread. I'd encourage you to keep documenting the get-togethers. Those are some good projects. That old brick, or is it stone, building does look like an appropriate place to hold such an event. It felt like I was actually there LOL

Here's the link to the famous Doug Ferguson FLYING CRANK GHOST (audience applause )http://www.phantasmechanics.com/fcghost1.html
Check the materials list, and read thru the how-to. It looks way more complicted than it actually is! Hold off on buying the motor for now. I need to do some checking, since I have read that the Dayton gearmotor they have listed is no longer available...I have alway used a rotisserie motor in mine.(under 20 bucks)
Round up as much of the shopping list as you can, and then I'll let you know what to do ahead of time.:p

Dave of the Dead talked me into it. If I can make it at the ungodly witching hour of 9AM Sat May 19th I'll come by. It should take 50 min to get there. I'd plan on videotaping or photographing some of the FCG construction so I have working knowledge of how to put one together in the future. I told Dave my static K Mart ghost attached to weighted photo flood light stands lit with a blacklight in the bedroom window pleased the ToT's last year. I just don't need another prop especially one that screws into the ceiling LOL But it would be fun to see how they're made. Reading about them and actually seeing them made are two different things. An FCG is a prop every yard haunted should at least know how to make.
I plan to bring my cooler and trash can fog chillers for everyone to see since that sounds like the next essential prop build next time out. This way you can see finished ones in person to decide if you want to build a cooler or a trash can chiller version or both next time. (Wal-Mart has a big stock of 48 qt and 60 qt Igloo Ice cube coolers in-season this time of year). I was one of those invloved in the Vortex manual thread last year. I used both styles in my yard haunt successfully last year. The cooler was hooked up to a plastic cauldron and the trash can chiller worked the graveyard shift (so to speak). Either style works well to create low-lying or at least heavy lingering slow-moving semi-controlled fog compared to straight-out-of-the-fogger-all-over-the-place-out-of-control fog.

OMG are you whining about a 50 minute drive, im gunna smack you when i get there. LOL. I have to drive 3 hours for you people and im stoked about it. I have to get up at 5 to get my crap together to leave by 6 and then drive home another 3 hours. And BG showed me a link on making the FGC that didnt use the bike tire, that is just cumbersome as hell. Is there a way to do it without that. I need a list of what i need or do i just use that link and go with it, also i found rotisserie motors on ebay for 5 dollars and the proceeds go to a boy scout troup. Just lettin ya know. :D

just go with the phantasmechanics link....tried and true! If you get ambitious, go ahead and cut the aluminum down to the sizes they say. That will save some time on the 19th.

hey guys! I just scored all the aluminum we need for our ghost platforms! If you have alredy purchased and haven't cut your's up yet, hope you saved the receipt! I will precut everything and have it all ready for the 19th!
unfortunately, I wasn't able to find a cheap motor alternative....I can say that a rotisserie motor will work ok (like for a babrbq grill) or just bite the bullet and get the dayton (check monterguts for their dayton motor alternate!...cheaper and more torque)

Well my concern with the rotisserie one is that it will burn out easily. Maybe i should just use it for something else and get the MonsterGuts one. Its still 50 bucks, but i wont have to remake this in a year or 2. What do you think?

BG, it is everything for the build EXCEPT the aluminum, the cheesecloth, the coathangers, and the LED eyes.....all the little hardware stuff and a wighead and some glue. If you all want, I could sort thru the how-to and shorten up the list to make it easier......the remaining supplies SHOULD end up around 10-15 bucks, or less (just a guess....don't quote me)
turtle2778
05-07-2007, 01:44 PM
Dave why dont ya run through with a little shortened list. I got all the hardware so i just wanna double check. THANKS
dave the dead
05-07-2007, 02:13 PM
ok, here it goes then:D
foam wighead or lightweight skull
3 small pulleys (the smaller the better)
stiff paper or thin plastic for hands (I have used a milk carton before...worked great)
elmer's glue or tacky glue
1.5 inch long 1/4-20 bolts----- need a total of 5
1/4" nuts ---I have counted 20 used in the directions
large fender washer ---- just one
1/4" flat washers--- total of 10
Lock washers--- total of 10
2in long 1/4" eye bolts--- total of 5

I have a life sized rubber heart, and I'm looking for a way to make it look like it is beating. Any ideas on a small motor that would accomplish this?
not sure about movement, but you could use one of the blinking red l.e.d. set ups that we will using for the eyes inside the heart....a red binking heart would look pretty cool. (Davey Jones won't care.....)

I will make the reservations in a couple of days...so if there are any takers, let me know. (The 3 1/2 hour ride each way is just a bit for my little one.....so it is just easier to come in early and spend the night....besides, neither one of us is a morning gal)

05-18-2007, 01:15 PM
ok, here it goes then:D
foam wighead or lightweight skull
3 small pulleys (the smaller the better)
stiff paper or thin plastic for hands (I have used a milk carton before...worked great)
elmer's glue or tacky glue
1.5 inch long 1/4-20 bolts----- need a total of 5
1/4" nuts ---I have counted 20 used in the directions
large fender washer ---- just one
1/4" flat washers--- total of 10
Lock washers--- total of 10
2in long 1/4" eye bolts--- total of 5
6 to 9 ft extension cord ---- just one (like a lamp cord)
I am not sure of the size of the bolts to hold the motors on yet....Bauton will let us know when he gets the motors in hand.
In addition to this, please bring these tools if possible: (this is optional...I can share:D )
Pliers, regular and needlenose
wire cutters
Scissors
Drill and bits
Now this is what im bringing. I dont have wire cutters, im gunna check at walmart today though. Ill need them again in the future im sure. And i got the biggest fender washer they had. I hope it was the right size. Also after reading the guys statements about the hands...are we just balling this up and hooking a line to it? I wanna make sure it looks floaty (is that a word?) Do we need to bring any food or money or drinks? Just covering my bases, im leaving at 5:30 to make it on time.
dave the dead
05-18-2007, 01:58 PM
Turtle, don't worry about the wire cutters if you don't want to spend the $$ right now....that won't be that big of a deal. ( the wire cutters I have slice thru a coathanger like nothing)
I have made hands in the past by cutting them out of a milk carton. This worked out really well because it blends with the transparent look of the ghost, is weatherproof, and is a bit stiffer than the paper suggested by phantasmechanics. I think it is important for the ghost to have a good looking hand that blends well with the entire appearance.
You may do what you want for food and drinks. The last meeting we bought our lunch at the deli that is in the bookstore....by lunchtime the smell of fresh chocolate chip cookies and frying bacon will be too much to bear.....mmmmmm! (but if you'd rather bring your own, that's totally up to you)
Did you ever find your blacklights that you wanted to buy? I could swing by Menards tonight and pick up as many as you would like....$10 for a 24 inch light...just say the word....:)
turtle2778
05-18-2007, 08:00 PM

BG, with aug 22 on a wednesday, which weekend are you going to have your daughter's party?
Looks like we are narrowing this down to aug 18, aug25 or sept1. (all of which I could do)
Turtle, Otaku just mentioned somewhere in the current LED spotlight thread that he bought a cheap led flashlight from biglots and used wax paper as a diffuser....you could also rubber band colored saran wrap to get different colors.

Build ideas so far..... LED spots, fog chiller, do your own thing.....
I have 2 possibilities....we could make pvc frame "creatures" like my Grim Jr. Or we could make rising spirits.....either would be fairly inexpensive and be a pretty easy build.....waddaya'll think?
turtle2778

Either one of them would be fine for me. I do like your rising spirit prop. It would look cool in my cemetary. LED"s and fog chiller where my idea's so of course i like them. BG!!!! you know better than that! You can't have ALL the toys! LMAO!!!!
There was no all of the above choice in that list! Let's keep it simple this time (more simple than trying to bang out a complete FCG, anyway)
My vote would either be for something like this guy

or a spirit, like this

Depending on what hours you guys get together, it looks like Aug 18th is the only time I could make it prior to Halloween and Cedar Point's HalloWeekends Season. I wouldn't build anything at the MNT. Even though the dave the dead Rising Sprits are classics. If I build anything this year and have a place to store it at home it'll be the Pumpkin Rot scarecrow head. So if the timing works out then this MNT would be a good time to demo my fog chillers and give a brief explanation of how they work. Last year I made a 48qt Igloo Vortex Ice Cube chiller and a 26 gallon Trash Can design that I have here. I may be able to show the fogging cauldron effect if I go up North this weekend to get that prop. My 60qt Igloo chiller is incomplete. I'd use that to transport the ice : ) I have two 400W Gemmy foggers. If we do this then turtle could bring her new 700W foggers to see what the difference is. If anyone has a 1000W fogger that'd be good. Here's the Making of a fog chiller thread (http://hauntforum.com/showthread.php?t=6880) in which I shared info and links with turtle. You'd have the info you need if you decided to build one or more later without my physical help.
For two demos in one I could bring the Lightning FX unit that I was experimenting with to supplement the fog. See Lightning and Thunder - On the cheap? thread. (http://hauntforum.com/showthread.php?t=3804) I'm not sure if I'll have halogen work lamps or not but any lamps will do for a demo. You can see in person if that's something you could buy later that could spice up your haunt.
If you want to build LED's at home, here's the LED spotlight How To thread (http://hauntforum.com/showthread.php?t=7113) courtesy of heresjohnny.
Turtle you could always send the kids to Kings Island (http://www3.cedarfair.com/kingsisland/index.cfm) : ) Actually that might open a logistic can of worms.

I plan to make my fog chiller this week so I can bring that one. I have no problem bringing the 2 fog machines i have. Thats cool. Im a wussy when it comes to electronics so i was scared to try the LED's on my own. I think i can handle it. What about speaker/spot hider rocks? They would be easy to transfer if still wet. Im just trying to go with props i need to have. But you know me...Im easy :D . What ever you decide is good with me.

That's good. I have a golf outting to attend on Aug 18th up North. I won't make it to the MNT anyhow to demo my fog chiller. I'll check in on your "Making of a fog chiller" thread to see how your construction went.

Hey just another idea, but what about the LED flickers flames? I need that for my fireplace also. YES i realize that this is something that i could do at home, with that said it is also supposed to be an easy project that should run smoothly for a large group of people. Did you want me to bring my fog chiller? Its all painted, just waiting for it to dry. I think i should have it done by this weekend.

sure Turtle, bring your chiller. I'd love to see one in action.
As for the LED projects....I can't imagine leading a group with a project that I haven't figured out myself. ( I really like it when I look like I know what I'm doing)
I'm pretty sure I could manage the spotlights, but just haven't spent any time researching or trying it yet.

Wow it's more like the Kentucky Indiana Ohio Haunters Association ; )
^^ One note about turtle's fog chiller demo to kee in mind is if you demo it outside in this hot humid weather it should theoretically work well because the fog will be colder, and hence heavier, than the air it's in. If you demo it indoors and you have the A/C running it should still work fine but maybe not as well. For one thing the air might be blowing the fog around. Those are my final thoughts on the chiller topic here ; ) Looking forward to seeing photos of turtle's chiller interpretation with a 700W fogger. Have fun!

HOLY CRAP!!! We are bustin at the seems. Dave are we gunna have room for all of us?? http://www.spookyblue.com/halloween/flickerlight/spookyfire/
This is where i found the idea. I need to have flame effect in my fireplace which is gas and broken, but still hooked up. I thought these would work well since they were battery operated. I like the version Otaku has done. I plan on using the mp3 player that he recommended with a fire soundtrack to go with it. With this diagram. I think i can handle it, but you are more familiar with wiring so i was just curious. Im assuming its the same basic principle for the LED spots. If we do that great if not thats okay too. I offered to bring the chiller cuz without actually including paint drying time or how long it took me to painstakingly jigsaw the hole out since i was cheap and didnt want to spend the 17 dollars for the 3" hole bit. This took me about 30 minutes to put together. I havent tested it yet, im planning on doing that after my son's party on saturday. Its been EXTREMELY hot here 105 plus a heat index. YIKES!!! So im not sure how well it will work, but ill give it a go. OOOH for notes on the spray paint for plastic. It still chips or scrapes off just like the cheap stuff jsut not quite as easily so dont go thinking you can bang this all around just cuz it has some "plastic" paint on it. Okay well thats about it for now. Okay folks lets make our choices on what we do for the MNT. Might as well offer up all the suggestions and vote on it.

Here's my official vote for a project..... Let's all make a version of my Junior reaper..... you can start to think about design this week and bring any sort of accessory to make it just the way you want. I will have some urethane skulls available , although the mold is looking pretty ragged and my pulls are not that great right now. I have a supply of the dark grey cloth...plenty for all. You all should plan on bringing in pvc and fittings to make a "stick figure" in any configuration that you would like to make....big, small, human, animal...it's totally your call. This will be a project that you will be able to complete on the 18th, and there are plenty of options for spicing it up when you get home (coating in MM or latex paint to stiffen the fabric, for instance)
So, things to bring:
a prop head, skull, or mask .
Hands, if you want your guy to have them ( I can also make up some greatstuff hands to have available)
PVC and fittings. If you want a little prop, 1/2 inch should be fine...if you plan on making a larger one, or if you will be eventually applying MM, go with larger pipe. (if you have questions, just ask) PVC fittings will be used for shoulders, elbows, knees, hips, feet....just think your stick figure through and buy what you need.
I will have some plywood cut out to use for bases to screw your figure down to, and will have screws available.....other than that, its a really cheap project, but the end result is totally up to you and your imagination.
I will also be playing around with led spots this week, and I think we may be able to build some of these as well....not sure about getting bulk leds by next week, though......
If that is too confusing, just let me know.....or if you all decide to mutiny and want to build something else, let me know that too....:D

Ok folks, I cleaned up the parts list a bit...hope this helps
<<< remember that you will need to think ahead to decide what sort of figure you want to make, your parts shopping will depend on it!>>>
PVC PIPE--- 20 feet (get whatever diameter pipe you think you will need....small figure with no MM = 1/2 inch pipe /////Large figure with MM applied later, at least one inch pipe, maybe more....I can help with the understructure if you plan on MM later)
FITTINGS: one "X" fitting (neck to shoulders)
four " 90 degree" fittings ( shoulders and hips)
four " 45 degree" fittings ( elbows and knees) (if you want arms and legs bent, that is)
three "T" fittings ( one will be the waist, two will be feet to mount to a board)
<<<<make sure your fittings match the size of your pipe>>>>
it would also be a good idea to grab a few extra of each just in case...you can always return them if you don't need them.
HEAD any sort of prop head....a skull, styrofoam wig head, pumpkin, mache'd head...just whatever you want your figure to look like.(I will have some urethane skulls available for a couple of bucks )
HANDS any sort of prop hand ....rubber hands, skeletal hands, gloves, etc. ( I will also have some greatstuff hands available...let me know ahead of time if you would like a set)
CLOTHING totally up to you....I will have a whole bunch of free grey cloth available that is perfect for this project, and also accepts MM very well. If you want your figure to be clothed, then bring the clothes....just a cape or robe? I have it covered...naked?...you are on your own!
PADDING You may need some sort of inner structer to keep the robe where you want it. Chickenwire works well, also blocks of styrofoam, pool noodles, balled up plastic bags, newspaper....think about what type of figure you want and then decide what you will need to get that sort of form.
OTHER THINGS TO BRING If you have these available, it would help out quite a bit:
PVC cutter or saw, PVC cement, cordless drill, screws, small diameter wire, duct tape, zip ties, staple gun, wire cutters....(all the little things that you don't think of and end up needing.) I will have some tools available to share, but it will make things run smoother if you can bring your own.
Here are two props I made using a pvc frame to give you ideas of the potential here:

lol dave.... ok so how much pvc should we bring?
well....It really depends on how big of a prop you are making....just measure out your arms, legs, torso, and neck to figure it out....add some extra just in case. (20 would be safe, and that's what I'm bringing for myself)

well, let me see...... We created pvc armatures for stand up props last time. Bg worked on a very cool project, but I will leave the details up to her since it will be her MM entry. Her mom and bro had a great time creating a version of the armature i designed, and have special plans for making a (ahem...hack , cough) ....Clown prop. We met Adam I and his wife, and they each made really cool armatures for their yard display. We had some extra time, and each of us got to assemble an LED spotlight thanks to heresjohnny's fantastic tutorial. You can check out my finished prop in the photogallery...Frau Trauermarsh decided to show herself after being in hiding for her entire shadowy existence.

Well what about a monster in a box or a trash can trauma, easily fit in a car or truck to take home and if we come with the monster box assembled then its just a matter or doing the movement part. Or what about making some tombstones using appliques. Ya know picking up a mold and using clay to form it let it dry bring that and ur styro and various cutting paraphernalia. I would like to get some more movement for next year. I had a lot of positive comments and would like to have a couple shockers for next year. I love how you had your garbage cans set up to scare them. Id have to leave mine out an extra day since its skipping thursday, but so what. Im trying to do a small walk through, just down my driveway. But i would like to have a couple of decent startles too. Or we can do a rocking chair person or a kicking leg guy. Mine was a HUGE success and i purchased him from factory card outlet for 60 bucks. He moved pretty slow and was sound activated, I would liek to add sound of screams and make him move faster so that could be an option. OOOh by the way. The FCG was one of the best things I had. I had a little girl come up to the yard skipping and stop dead in her tracks and stare, she started to back away and her dad said that was the first time all night she had been scared. I cant wait to scare them next year HE HE HE. We could also do a rocking chair guy, ya know pretty much anything using a wiper motor would probably be good. I think i might actually get my husband to come along, he helped so much this year. Okay peeps lets get together with some ideas.

Also what about a skull mirror or body parts type thing for a mirror. I would like to have a long one for my back wall. Or using a motion sensor light to operate a prop? I just read something about htat the other night.

if everyone says yes to this, plan on the project to cost approx $100. (based on my memory of the trashcan trauma that I built about 7 years ago) This is still one of my favorite toys, and has been very reliable.

I'm just going off my memory Steph....There are probably a few shortcuts that could be made to reduce the cost.....if I remember right my first remote came from radio shack and was about $30....you can get them for $10 at menards....also, I spent way too much on air fittings and know better, cheaper methods now, and you could start gathering the supplies a bit at a time, too (if we decide to go for it)

I have used those before....sometimes they work fine, and others are a bit strange in how they allow air to get thru. Most likely will be ok, though. The TCT needs a large volume to pass quickly in order to spring two cylindars.
