Instructions for making a latex Bucky skull mold, and casting lightweight cheap skulls from it using paper mache. As always, try it, but be careful, making one mold is like trying to eat one potato chip......Vlad

Hi all. I'm sorry about the dead links. I gave up on continually updating the links through the Monster List, and Haunt Project, Kodak just keeps changing them. I have more how tos that I never even got online, and stopped making any more until I can teach myself enough web design to get them up in a permanent place, yeah right, lol. Anyway, try this for now and see if it works, sorry. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Vlad, I'm raising this thread, darryl and others are interested in paper mache skulls. Have you given any thought to Jeff or I hosting your pictures?

I am currently working on a latex mold inspired by the pictures you gave me access to. For anyone reading this thread the picture series is a very through how-to on paper mache skulls from a latx mold, I highly recommend you contact Vlad for access. I am trying a modification by casting separate skull and jaws, hopefully ending up with a skull with a moving jaw. I will post results as soon as I have some.

I have given up on making 2 peice paper mache skulls with seperate head and jaws. I did however learn several things about making the molds, and am starting 2 new molds; one is a front view and the other is a single cast of the head like in Vlads Howto.

First, make sure you let the latex dry between coats, and be carfeul saturate the cheeseclothe, I ended up with air bubbles on my first attempt. Second, I did not not fill in recessed areas nearly enough, the indentations for the temples and the depth of the eye-sockets make it very difficult to get paper mache in that area. Finally, I did not fill in along the bottom edge of the skull head enough, so there is a lip around much of the opening in the bottom of the mold, again making it very difficult to get paper mache in there.

Seems to me after trying this that you need to be able to easily access all surfaces of the inside of the mold from the opening, otherwise it is more trouble than it is worth.

The stupid Michaels in Salinas doesn't carry latex...Those thoughtless Bastards!

The Seattle Michaels doesnt carry latex either. But Tap plastics does, I have been buying a lot of various acrylic parts lately. I never realized how cheap acrylic is. I think i'll start using it for a lot more prop building things.
I got a 12x12 inch sheet of 1/4 inch acrylic and a 3/8 x 12 inch acrylic tube all for $2.56, this was the basis for my servo platform

Vlad

Thanks Doc. I've tried the great stuff route, but it's unpredictable in it's results. I use a mold almost identical to this one to cast my 2 part foam skulls however.
