OK, so I picked up two of the crow-on-a-ball pillars at Michael's last week and I notice that they're a bit top-heavy. I think that a planter base may the way to go for stabilizing these things. Has anyone seen something like this at garden supply stores, Home Depot etc? I can't find anything online but I'm probably not describing it correctly. If I can't find something suitable I'll likely build some mache bases for them, but would prefer something more durable and weighty.

Can you describe the planter base you're thinking of?

Are you talking about a wooden box?

Otaku, I'm thinking of doing something similar next year with my cemetery stone "fenceposts", but they are very light. I think I'll have to put plywood footings on the cardboard/foam pillars with some heavy material, maybe just a sandbag, inside the hollow pillar.

I'm picturing a circular base about 12" diameter at the bottom, with a 6.5" to 7" socket at the top to set the pillar into. The socket would need to be at least an inch or so deep. I'll probably use Liquid Nails to mount the pillar in the socket. If the base tapers toward the top, that's OK.

I think I found the answer - upside-down flower pots. Some of the plastic ones have snap-on trays to catch the water, and when removed the pot has a socket that may fit the pillars. I didn't have a tape measure with me so I'll need to go back and take some measurements. Just need to figure out a way to add some weight to them.

Side note - the hardware store also had some Halloween stuff out. They had a talking skeletal Bride-and-Groom that sings "I Got You Babe". The skulls were a bit cheesy, but the mouth action was very good. $40.00 each. Probably would be a good hack for putting in your own soundtrack to have them speak to each other and the TOTs.

I bought one of those crow-on-a-ball pillars too. I think they look great. And I bought an urn-like pot on clearance at Michael's (and with a 40% off coupon on top of that) to set it on. It gives a very cemetery-in-ruins feeling. Hope yours is working out.
