I'd like to do a swamp room this year. For the floor I was going to try to find a cheap memory foam mattress. I thought it would be good and squishy to walk on like a marsh. However those can be pretty expensive. Does anyone have any other ideas on how to do a squishy floor on the cheap?

well, in the same line of thinking you could use upholstry foam on the floor.

I'm sure you could get an old mattress from a swap sheet or something...
Just make sure that you have a railing or something for the people to hold onto...
I've heard horror stories about people tripping and falling while doing the same thing you want to do.
.

I'd say your best bet is to maybe put straw on the ground, and cover it with some type of sheet (green/brown). Or even lay some panels of white Styrofoam down, but it would get damaged quickly most likely.
I used an old futon mattress that was being thrown away. You will definitely need some sort of railing, people lose their footing fairly easily when they are running across it!! Brawhahahahaha!!!

How about small inflatable swimming pools that are going on sale this time of year? You could fill them a quarter full with water (or blood...BWAHAHAHAHA) and cover that with brown ratty blankets.

You're right about the possibility of someone getting hurt, I'll definitely have to figure out how to add some railings without taking away from the swamp theme. I think the regular mattress may actually be a better idea than the memory foam. They would be more springy and marsh like. Any ideas on where to find old mattresses? Some old used ones would be perfect they would probably already smell funky enough to add to the swamp theme too.

resale stores.
Craig's List in the "free" section!! MOST people have no need for disgusting old mattresses!! (Except for a few demented souls!!):p :p

Hobos on the street will most likely get made if you take em from dumpsters...so try your neighbors first! One of them could have an old kids one!

Make sure you check for bedbugs if you use an old matress. And, LOL, hope you are not using a UV light around a used mattress, you could get some "unnatural glowing" from the mattress that you dont want attention drawn to.
As far as a raling, you could rig up a large sisal rope (think boating) from steady pillars that might look like it belongs in your haunt.

thanks for all the help on this one, the squishy floor idea got vetoed. I guess it'll be too hard for anyone in a wheelchair to get through. Thanks anyhow!
