View Full Version : Anyone ever hack already motorized household items?

I just pulled an ice cream maker and a paper shredder apart to look at the internals. They appear usable for something if I could reduce the RPM.

Does anyone know if household items like these would break down after long running times of a couple of hours? I guess I could just run the darn thing prior to using it in a prop and see, but I wondered if anyone else had luck in conversions.

I am half tempted to go snag a dryer that won't heat up anymore. It shouldn't be that hard to place a fuse and a switch prior to the motor. The only thing I don't know is what is the actual rpm of a motor like that not that once I get it I can't find that out also.

Any advice or warnings for that matter are always welcomed.

An ice cream maker should be able to run for long time variables.

The paper shreader maybe not as long, but should be good to go for a while.

Can't give ya exact time frames, but I know that ice cream isn't made in 5-10 minutes! :p :D
