Ken,

I thought the specs were a little different though I was too lazy to actually check. However, the shorter throw might actually work out better for me. If you recall, I actually want my unit standing erect...boy that doesn't sound right at all...and just jerking forward to scare people as they walk by (may as well continue my way down into the gutter).

So rather than folding almost in half as would occur with the original flipper design, this shorter cylinder might just result in the movement I'm looking for.

Karen, Have you gathered a parts list for you and Deb and the talking headstones yet? What's your next phase of that project????

Rich, I didn't have a chance to call that company yet on shipping charges (will have the answer by tomorrow), and yes, I think this is a good project to play around with the cylinder placements and learn by doing. the only difference I see is that placing the cylinder farther forward on the mechanism, we'll be making it work a little harder. I'm still thinking that a 7/8" bore shaft should be more than strong enough to compensate without losing any range of motion.

SHARON, did you look at the link to that cylinder and what do you think?

Also this is the last day to order those color organ kits on sale if you're so inclined. Don't be afraid of the project, I'm sure Joe will be glad to talk us through our first breadboard soldering.

Talking Headstone......anyone else wanting to join in on this prop needs to bring a Dougie Tree. For April we also need a two inch thick piece of foam large enough for the face to peek out from. Container of Model magic and any tools you may need for carving the foam.

Karen I will be making something similar, so I will bring my Douglas tree! Also Ken I think the cylinder looks like it will be great for what we need it for and the price is right! Are we ordering it together to see if we can save on shipping?

Since I won't be doing the Dougie, I'm going to bring along my cauldron creep to work on in the event I get done with the rest of the flipper, which I intend to do. I'll either be painting the cauldron or I'll be getting the head mechanism in to proper position, or both.

Anything on the welding side of things I'll need for Saturday? Oh, and if you haven't seen the latest
on YouTube (beginning at around the 9:00 mark), he does some more welding demos. One thing I noticed in particular was him saying he has to keep the power at its absolute lowest setting and the feed rate very slow otherwise you can burn holes through the metal. Sound familiar?

Also he recommends doing tack welds first, then going back over the joints with the finished weld. He also brushes the heck out of his joints and gets a perfect weld. I hate him.

While Dave doesn't use the same kind of welder we've been using, I was wondering if all the "slop" we (me) get around our welds are the result of the "cheap" wire that comes with the unit? I don't know that it's cheap, but I'm guessing they're not putting top of the line stuff in there. I wonder if the wire was "upgraded" would we get better results? I don't know, I'm just speculating. And the fact that I suck at welding.

Anyway, looking forward to Saturday and the jalapeno dip. I wonder if my jars will actually make it home or I'll just drink it while I'm there.

Whoa. I was just trying to put the link to his show in the post, not the video itself. Oh well, now it's easier for you to check it out. It's a show well worth watching anyway; highly entertaining and Dave's knowledgeable as all get out about prop building.

Unfortunately, he has little interest and/or time in getting together at M&T's. I tried to convince him to come, but he's a busy, busy man. Heck, it's hard enough trying to get FrightGuy to come back though he does promise to give us the run of his house when he's settled in. Perhaps Dave will show up then since they live close to one another.
