We have done our version of an Escape Room several years for our Halloween Party. The only difference is we don't have a room within which we lock individuals. Instead we do it as a group effort. We have all the clues, etc. throughout the house and everyone (who wants to participate) works together to figure them out and accomplish the goal. I have done the following story lines but can't think of anything for this year: (1) When we moved into our house we found out that the former owner was a mad scientist and did experiments in our basement. Now everyone who enters is infected. They have to find an antidote. (2) Someone was captured and is being tortured. They need everyones assistance to free them. (3) We have been overrun by spiders. There's a huge spiders nest hanging from a tree but it's too high. They have to figure out how to get it down and kill the spiders. (4) Our friend has a very rare strain of the Covid virus. We have to give him a specific injection but the doctor says it can only be given a specific time so they hid clues to how to find it and will only give them to us after the specified time. Obviously, these back stories had more detail than what I've given you, but I just wanted to let you know what types I've done in the past. Can you help me think of a back story for this year? I don't have a theme for my party, as of yet. This story may help me decide on a theme. Although, I don't always have a theme for my parties.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

I made up an escape room with special furniture etc that I made from thrift store items. The story was about a Magician that found a cursed diamond that had radioactive waves that inflicted death, circa. 1890s steampunk esque theme. I'll see if I can find a copy of the full back story to share. Edit: found it!

Guess I am a traditionalist with an electronics hobby so I'd probably do something along the lines of "Strange events and hauntings have started happening in the house. At first they were sort of minor... a book slipping off a shelf, something being found in a different location than it was left, etc. But the events have grown in both scope and effect and have now become terrifying. Guests need to investigate. Along the way, they find the previous owner of the house was experimenting in paranormal activities. They solve the clues to get his ghost hunting equipment working, find the source and put an end to it."

This is somewhat of an adaption of your 'mad scientist' theme and countless movies - so I am in no way claiming originality! lol

I do like this idea but wanted something different for this. Thanks for the suggestion though.

I have decided on a theme! It's going to be A Stephen King Halloween Party. (SQUEEL!!!!) So, I'm going to have things representative of his books/movies throughout my home (as decoration) that they will have to use to get clues/keys for the Escape Room. I was thinking something along these lines for the back story: SK has decided to write another book --- YEAH! However, the characters from his previous books seem to be coming to life (at least in his mind). He's struggling with this so much that he has developed persecutory delusional disorder. A disorder in which he believes that the characters of his books are real and are trying to harm him. His Psychiatrist has subscribed Aripiprazole, which seems to help him control the disorder. Unfortunately, he has lost the medication and needs our help finding it so he can continue his writing. Does anyone have something different? Better?....
Some examples that I have come up with for the Escape Room itself are (1) Have a cross with Gage written on it in my semetary scene. There will be a small arrow pointing down. They will have to dig through the dirt to find the clue/key. (2) I will have a dummy dressed in a rain coat and hat holding a balloon. They will have to pop the balloon to get the clue. (3) I have a book with a section of the inside cut out that I'm going to put a SK book jacket on. They will have to notice the book, open it and get the clue/key. (4) I'm going to print out SK book jackets or movie posters and circle one letter/word on each. They will have to locate all these pictures and figure out the message of the circled letters/words. I have thought of several ways to decorate for this theme but nothing specific to go along with the SK theme for the escape room. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
