We are on the sixth match-up with only two more to go before we move onto Round Two pitting the winners from former matches against each other for the Top Dog position of Horror films in our little contest. I wanted to try something a bit different. I know each of us have a warm spot in our black hearts for psychotic masked serial killers, especially when it comes to Pamela Voorhees' kid and a tyke whose sole mission in life was to grow up and slaughter every last member of his family not to mention anyone else who got in his way. This is a battle of sequels. Everyone has their favorites in both the "Friday" series and Halloween. These two in my opinion, stand heads above the rest of mostly a smorgasbord of travesties. The first of these re-introduced us to a hockey masked slasher who is now a zombiefied killing machine. The other, a sequel more violent than its predecessor that the great John Carpenter didn't want to make, but he did at the "prodding" of the studio. As the late Rod Serling used to say, submitted for your approval:

Halloween II gets my vote. I like both films, but Halloween II continues where Halloween left off. I think Friday The 13th Part VI was so contrived. I mean Jason is resurrected from the dead by a lightning bolt. Jason wasn't even the "killer" in part five. Then again, they made Halloween III, which has nothing to do with Mike Myers. I have a love/hate relationship with both franchises. But, Halloween & Halloween II will always have a special place in my heart.

Halloween II gets my vote quite easily.

Much like Non Comos Mentis, there's a love/hate relationship here with these franchises. I love some of them because they're genuinely good, while love others because they're just so bad.

Friday part VI is one of those movies I love to hate. Realistically, it's a friggin' horrible movie, but it's enjoyable in its horrendousness (is that even a word?). It's alot like watching a comic book come to life, Jason is just too comical to be taken seriously by this point.

Halloween II, while not even holding a candle to Halloween I, is still a very solid horror movie. It's one of the rare sequels that turned out to be very good. In a way, I'm glad John Carpenter was forced into this one, even if it was just in the role of producer.

It's dark, viscious, and even lends a backstory to Michael where none really existed before. His reason for wanting to hack up Laurie Strode is brought out, though at this point no real reason for it was given other than "he hates".

It's good to see you back around NCM, stick around some and help out with these match-ups.

Once again, I have to play odd man out (Where's Raxl? I'll bet he would vote the same way I would.) the sixth installment of the Friday series is probably my favorite. I also like the second part, The Final Chapter and The New Blood but I have a thing for the Frankensteinian way that Voorhees was brought back to life. The scene where Jason's eye opens for the first time in at least a decade after the lightning strike, you see nothing but murderous intent that hasn't been quelled by the chill of the grave. Sure there were some over-the top comedic elements to the plot, but that is what makes this a great popcorn movie. It's all not to be taken very seriously, and J.V. the twisted freak we all have come to know him as, goes off on his endless mission doing what we know he's best at: killing camp counselors in the most interesting of ways. IMO it's the best of the lot. I like the throwback to Mary Shelley's creation as well as watching the most prolific movie serial killer in all his devastating glory. It also doesn't hurt that the great Alice Cooper did some music for the film.

Now don't get me wrong. I LOVE Halloween II. I believe the series would have been best served ending when Loomis blew up that hospital room with him and The Shape in it. Unfortunately, it went on an spawned some terrible sequels, Part IV being the only watchable one. Yet, by this time Myers had become like all the other masked slashers around him, even if the movie takes place short minutes after the first. Carpenter wanted to avoid making Myers a cliche' like this in the first place, yet I also am glad this movie was made. I like it a lot, but I still like Jason Lives a bit better.

Friday 6 kicks Halloween 2's ass 10 ways til sunday.
Now, I'm not gonna lie, I've never been a big fan of HALLOWEEN. Maybe one day I'll dig up that old HALLOWEEN timeline I did. But, let's get this going.
Halloween 2 is set in the terrifying locale of...a walk in clinic.
And where are all the staff at? It's Halloween, and there are like, a total of 4 people in there.
Jamie Lee Curtis is pointless in this one. Not only does she not have anything good to do, more importantly, her CHARACTER has nothing to do except lay around in a hospital bed.
Loomis almost makes this flick watchable. Almost.
Oh, and look, there goes Lance Guest, before he hit it "big" in JAWS 4. Look at him cry in the ambulance. Hey, does he ever get killed? Or do the film makers just forget about him?
And that state trooper? He makes Crystal Lake's finest look like the greatest police force of all time.
The guy playing Michael this time around is a friggin' stiff. He reminds me of the clown that played Jason in Jason vs Freddy.
What's up with that kid in the Myers mask at the start of the movie anyways?
It's like, 10 minutes after the first movie, and somehow this clown already has a complete local serial killer costume.
I know Carpenter and company had no intention of making this movie, but they didn't have to make it LOOK like they didn't want to make it.

FRIDAY THE 13th PART 6: JASON LIVES
The funniest of the series. Not that that means too much, but I love the attempt they made at humor in this one. I LOVED the whole Frankenstein bit they used to bring Jason back to life. Remember, he'd been in the ground rotting for like 10 years until Tommy and Horshack show up. And, yeah, how about Horshack! C'mon, ya gotta love Horshack.
Jason is kick ass in this one. Not Kane Hodder, but still pretty slick.
Not quite sure I buy Thom Mathews as Tommy, but wtf. He's not horrible.
And, hey, there's a car chase! You don't see that in ANY other Friday.
Speaking of vehicles, that shot of Jason on top of the RV is classic.
And, look, there are finally kids at the camp! How about that!
Check out all the blood in that cabin when the sheriff shows up! That rocks!
I still don't know why Tommy sets the lake on fire around the boat, but it looks damn cool.
But lets cut to the chase here. The reason FRIDAY 6 kicks so much ass can be summed up in two little words:

Alright No. 2 was good but the directors of 6 had a stroke of genius by incorporating the Frankenstein feel to a non-universal franchise. Voorhees vs Myers, my vote was already cast when I did the thread months ago... sorry John but Voorhees wins.

Although Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives is really on my lower half of the Paramount Friday series, I vote for Jason Lives in this equation. Because Halloween II was just a big disappointment. I can't get over that really really lame throat slitting of the cop's throat where you could see it was just a line of red dye and there was no cut mark or flesh hanging out. Also, I can't forgive that flashback scene with Michael as a kid sitting in the corner and that stupid blood that looks like melted candlewax dripping on the floor- was that supposed to scare us?

Halloween II does have great atmosphere, the great halloween feel to it and the score was pretty good (did John Carpenter do this one too?). But Jason Lives excells in all the area Halloween II failed. Far better make-up effects, great music (not necessarily better), great atmosphere, Jason as more of an unstoppable menace is just scarier and more intense. I don't get the people who say this movie's Jason is too comical. Jason was only comical in part 5 (a joke, son-I say, a joke). Halloween II kind of doesn't have a leg to stand on here.

Nay, I'm not saying he's comical, but very comic booki-ish in style as well as in the fact Jason is an unstoppable menace. Hell, even Jason's revival by lightning harkens back to something you'd expect to see in a comic book.

Though, I must say it is somewhat funny in the sheer ridiculousness of it all. Some of the kills are funny in a dark humor kind of way (face smash in the RV scene comes to mind). I just don't think Friday VI was a movie that was played 100% straight, whereas Halloween II was.

Nice. I think these are the kinds of discussions Sinister was going for when setting out on starting this game up.

This is the VERY thing I was wanting in the first place as you so eloquently stated my Undead friend. And as such, since this is moving along ever so nicely, I'm going to leave this particular bout up for a few more days before declaring a winner and moving on to the next one.

I kind of find the implication that Jason is in any way comedical, in his unstoppable menacing way, to actually be irrelevant. Because if you think about it his being unstoppable meant what to 99 percent of his victims in that movie? Very little. People say now that part of Jason's being is that no matter what you do to try to stop him it won't work. Well, in this movie you don't see the victims trying to do a whole lot of anything. They run or scream, then he kills them because he's stronger- which is the same circumstance in the earlier movies when he wasn't unkillable. If they had gotten anywhere when they ran or stopped anything from happening by screaming, than perhaps they would have later discovered that he was unstoppable. But that fact doesn't even matter until the end of the movies, when the chase reaches it's real climax. There is little to no actual chase in the beginnings of the movies because this is the time where the movies are establishing their real motive: to kill people, lots of them, and violently, but creatively.

You mean, discussion is not just allowed but encouraged? Like you know you really want it? This is not the attitude I'm finding at most other horror or spook-oriented boards.

Well, yeah, I do encourage it to a point. If it reaches a point where the discussion gets obscured by personal attacks, that's the only time I draw the line. Feel free to disagree with someone, even be passionate about your views, just make sure you don't start "throwing punches" at another member just because they have a differing view than you.

Anyhow, I think you're missing my point. I'm not calling Jason COMEDICAL, I'm saying he's taken on a sort of "Horror Superhero" image in this movie, much the same way a comic book character such as The Hulk would come across with.

Though, I do find some dark part of my humor tickled with the creative ways in which Jason kills people.

I'm not calling Jason COMEDICAL, I'm saying he's taken on a sort of "Horror Superhero" image in this movie, much the same way a comic book character such as The Hulk would come across with. Though, I do find some dark part of my humor tickled with the creative ways in which Jason kills people.

That's the viewers who do that. The movies might in a way make it easier for them. But only if they want to see him as a Superhero, which many of them do. And I most certainly realized you had a point, I was just trying to add something to my side. I thought I had a clever bit of insight.
