I need to make some tombstones. I want to make some really nice fancy ones. Wheres the best how to and what tools do I need. I saw one how to and looked like the guy was using a font template over the foam and had some sort of hot burner pen looking thing? LOL great description I know.
Thanks for the help!

Here is my process
1. Print out lettering and tape to foam board that is cut out in tombstone shape.
2. Use wood-burning tool with exacto blade to trace out the letters
3. Use dremel to router out the letters leaving a nice straight cut line from the hot knife blade

Just this week I completed 8 tombstones using this method and will be painting them this weekend. Goes pretty fast as soon as you get the hang of it.

Here are some links for some ideas on tombstones:

Be careful, dont use oil base paint on styrofoam, it will desolve it. First coat with a water base paint. Most spray paint is oil base although there are some newer water base paints now. Always test your paint on scrap first just to be sure.

Others have referred to the great how-tos, which I used when I made my first stones :) I still have most of those bookmarked!

I recommend a woodburning tool as well as the fancy shmancy tips that are available. I especially like the really pointy cone tip and the rounded short tip for small lettering. Walmart & Michaels carry accessory packs of different points, pretty cheap too. If you have a Dremel, try to get a router attachment and bits for it. The Dremel works WONDERS in larger details and in creating a bas relief effect in large areas. Total time saver!

I didn't take enough pics during construction, but maybe the ones that are there could help ya...
