Try using liquid latex instead of monster mud. It works really good for corpsing

 

Sounds like you don't have enough latex paint in your mud ratio.

 

I'm thinking Hog Flu is correct in his guess.

Another approach you can try is to use just latex paint with your paper towels. Mr Chicken posted a nice little tutorial about that method here:

yeah, I agree, I have found regular monster mud to be very brittle. Use latex paint or liquid latex.

 

I like monster mud for lots of stuff but you always need to paint over it heavily and/or seal it or it will crack like you said.

I agree that you need more latex, that will help with bonding.

Consider switching from paper towels to fabric. You don't even have to buy it. Cut up old clothes you don't wear, or get some hand-me-down. The fabric is a better (and stronger) substrate, so it won't break off as easily.

 

Check out StillBeastStudios on youtube he has a tutorial on how to corpse. i would strongly suggest that.

 

I use cheap garbage bags and a heat gun from harbor freight then layers of craft paint to make them look creepy.
