Pallets

I'll ask this here since someone's obviously encountered this...

I've seen stacks of pallets behind various stores in my town. What do they do with them? Take them back to the warehouse I've assumed but some are broken, etc. It would be an awesome source of wood for props and I've seen project suggesting their use, but I've been too embarassed to ask in the stores.

We are REAL tight for money this year. My wife was unemployed for 8 mos and we have had a fair amount of medical expenses (unemployment + my wife = breakdown) so I'm trying my best not to spend any money whatsoever if I can avoid it. Free wood is real appealing right about now.

Should I just go in and ask for the broken bits?

Yeah just go in and ask them if you can take them. Most of the time they don't care. I've gotten many pallets in the past like this. If they say no, just go to the next store.
Most places are happy to have you haul them off. Also check the free section of craigslist--pallets show up a lot there, along with other stuff that can be used (old furniture can be very creepy with the right lighting). We use pallets for walls, tables, random furniture, and take them apart for the wood.

Free is good!
FYI, pallets are made of extremely hard wood and are usually nailed together with twisted nails that are designed NOT to come out. Get ready for a LOT of work dismantling them for the wood. You will need a good pry bar and sharp saw blade, plus a good bit of time. I prefer to get old fence panels if possible. This stuff shows up all the time on craigslist in our area.
Cool! Thanks for the replies.

Now I wish I still had my pickup truck instead of my Beetle...

I am making several props this year with pallet wood. Like Spinwitch mentioned, I got mine free off of Craig's list. They are a pain to take apart as Jaybo stated, they are a pain to take apart. I ended up using a Sawzall with a metal cutting blade to cut through the spiral nails. Once the boards are separated, I use a metal punch to knock out the nail heads.

To screw my props together, I use "Star" drive wood screws. They are self tapping so you don't have to pre-drill the holes. When I got my props assembled, I used a small propane torch to add some more "Aging" to the wood. Here are a few pic of a couple of my pallet wood projects:

Ask away. The worst they can do is say no, but they'll most likely be happy if you take some off their hands.

Very nice props. I especially like your toe-pincher coffin.
Definitely ask! I went to the building next door to my work & they guy actually loaded a bunch up on their forklift to take them to my car! A lot of places in my area will also just set them out by the road. I've gotten several that way.

Right now, I'm waiting for the guys to come replace my Mom's privacy fence - I want that wood!!
I picked up a few more free pallets today....I was driving through our local industrial park and noticed some pallets sitting outside next to a dumpster for one of the businesses....They were more than happy to have me haul these away for them...:D!

That one on the left is a great score as it is longer than the standard ones and it has several long boards in it that will be great for finishing off my next Toe Pincher coffin!
