Hello everyone! I am getting geared up for the Mean Season and I am starting my schematics for this year’s projects. But I’m in need of some advice: For the past two years my wife and I have thrown a great Halloween party. We have well over 50 people (our house isn’t that big, so it was really crowded!) and everyone comes in costume. While the first year was a general ‘Halloween’ theme (carved pumpkins, tombstones, fog, etc.) last year we went with the Wizard of Oz theme (my wife is an Oz and Wicked lunatic). She dressed as the wicked Witch of the West (or Elphaba, for those of you in the ‘know’) and I dressed as a flying monkey. Our costumes rocked (I am now the greatest spokesperson for “InCharacter Costumes”). Our guests didn’t know there was a theme but quickly discovered what it was as they followed a Yellow brick road to our house and found the witch’s legs sticking from under our house, the “wicked witch” theme music on a loop, etc. I know, it is taking me forever, but hang in here with me…

This year we were considering dressing as Captain Hook and Peter Pan. If in fact we go with that idea, I want to go with a Pirate/Neverland (sans Michael Jackson) theme. So, I need some ideas. I’m thinking a ‘gangplank’ of sorts (with the rope handles, etc.) going up to our front door. You know… like something you would walk as you boarded a pirate ship). After that, I’m at a loss. We live in a 2 story colonial fronted by hedges, and I’m unsure if it is possible to expand on the ‘ship’ theme. I’m not quite that handy and only have a limited supply of tools (drills, circular saw, reciprocating saw, dremel, but no table saw, router or the like). And, to make it even more difficult, I would prefer to go with ‘budget’ projects. Yeah, so…this 20 page dissertation to say… “HELP!”

Just a couple of ideas right off the top of my head... You'll definitely need a crocodile lurking around somewhere. You might be able to swing a "lost boys/Neverland" enchanted forest sort of theme easier than a pirate ship.

I would go with a static croc. One made out of foam. An animated one would be too expensive.

Most of all fly a pirate skull and bones flag. They run less than $10.

Have jars filled with fine glitter (pixie dust) that you can blow onto people (makes a mess but what the heck).

Figure out a way to wrap a light in cheescloth and animate it to 'fly' over the hedge. Every Neverland needs a Tinkerbell.

Just a few ideas, but definately go with the flag.

Thanks guys! Great ideas! I'm really getting excited about the theme.

I once saw info on building a prop cannon from concrete form tubes, but now I can't find the site (of course, now that I need the information!). Have any of you come across it in your prop-building-internet travels?

Here are a couple of cannon sites (I'm making one for my own haunt this year from the concrete forms):

a bit more complicated, but very nice end product: Foley Halloween

concrete tube cannon: HERE

Grapegirl, could you check the link on that second cannon design again? I'd really like to see both plans, but my browser is saying it can't find the URL for the second one. Thanx!
I just checked it and it's coming up fine for me. Try it again, Dread and let me know...
