The printable version uses the archive and since the archive only keeps text and no images you're stuck with text only.

People have been requesting the capability to include images in the printable version since 2006.

Dave - you'd have to play with a new stylesheet and possibly replacing the printthread.php.

You can print to a PDF file with a program called CutePDF. It installs like a printer, but when you click print it ask where you would like the file located. I use it all of the time for stuff like this as you never know when someone's website will disappear.
